First let me say:  :cheer: :one:

Julio is beautiful! Beautiful! He's a gelding, yes? How old?

If he's all grown up, he probably doesn't need any grain...just hay (not alfafa) and pasture (you may have to restrict this once the grass comes in, by putting him in the Jenny Craig pen, also known as "The Ain't OK Corral"). Most all of ours get plain hay and we've started using Equimin minerals free choice.

If his pasturemates are getting any grain, your problem will be keeping Julio out of theirs...once he sees his buddy has something good to eat, he'll sidle on over, calmly turn his butt toward the one with the goodies, then bounce his butt a few times until the buddy moves away from the bucket.

Same vaccinations as a horse, same deworming schedule (by weight), hoof trims about every 8-10 weeks (if you want a copy of some donkey trimming info for your farrier, I can mail it to you, just PM me your address).

I'd take off the halter (they can get hung up in them when they scratch their faces with a hind leg). This is where I get mine (very lightweight) and about the only time they wear one is for the vet, the farrier, or going somewhere:

OH, how exciting! Does he lead for you? He looks quite at home already. The other horse (Rudester?) will adjust after a while. Looks like you got a REALLY nice donkey! MORE PICTURES, MORE PICTURES!!!

I've got the "Me and Julio" thing going on, too, as it's one of my favorite songs. I almost trotted him down tot he elementary school about a mile away just so I could take a picture and say, "Look, here's me and Julio, down by the schoolyard!" :teehee:
He He, you absoluetly have to do that. What a blast!

He's adorable <3 SO cute and fluffy :one:

Sing Mia Song, I just thought of something you might want to get....some "Whoa!" spray or something similar. Donkeys are fond of chewing on horses' tails. :innocent:

HH, thanks for putting up that Paul Simon video...had to listen and watch it twice...you know, what a precursor to Graceland that song is, interesting, eh?

Oh, when I listen to that stuff, I just think to myself "take me back, all the way back, to the 60's!"

Now, back to Julio....I hope he's doing well and has by now converted Sing Mia Song and her husband to the longer eared side of things.

Thanks, OTF! Julio is coming 10, and yup, he's a gelding. He's munching on the timothy roundbale (no one here gets alfalfa, so that's good) and I'd been giving him the teeniest handful of Puzzle's feed, which is for easy keepers. I'm doing that more to clue him in that a bucket = goodies so that I can catch him as needed. He seems awfully pudgy to me, but I'm not sure exactly what weight a donkey is supposed to be, ya know??

I tried to take his halter off last night and he kind of freaked a little bit, so I left it on for now. My only other experience with donkeys is my trainer's, who is obese and naughty, naughty, naughty--very standoffish, and like wrestling a greased pig to halter, catch, lead, medicate, etc. So I had figured I'd leave the halter on Julio until I was sure I could catch him.

My farrier trimmed him on Monday and he has some white line disease, which she said was pretty typical for donkeys. I'd love some info on donkey trims if you can send it! I'll PM you my addy.

He leads really well, even without a rope. Rudy is still fascinated, and I caught them touching noses last night. So cute! I love my little long-ear!

Here's a picture to show his little burro-belly. :cloud9: Luckily, Puzzle's tail is tied up for the winter, so he can't chew on it. But Rudy has the most gorgeous tail, so I will break out the no-chew this summer!
