So I've been putting this off as much as possible and thought that maybe I was going to be one of the lucky ones who never had to have it done but this weekend my mouth started hurting like you know what. So this morning I called work and told them that I had to have the day off to go to the dentist. Found out that one of my wisdom teeth is impacted so both wisdom teeth need to come out (I only have 2 to start with). So this afternoon I'm off to talk with an oral surgeon and will hopefully have them out pretty soon. I do however get time off from work for this because of the drugs that I'm required to take for this and what my job requires. However I can think of 100 other things I would rather be doing with time off.

Some people have no problems and other are not so lucky. I was one of those not so lucky folks. I got them out last year. The surgrey only took 30 minutes to remove them. But the pain after the drugs wore off was aweful. They gave me viocdin and that did not even touch it. I was lucky in that I didn't get bruised up but my mouth was swollen for days and I could not chew/swallow anything either. It was not fun and I was a miserable person for week and half because of it. I say schedule it for a thurs or friday so you can have the weekend to heal. Good Luck.... |

Well the way my schedule is, I work 24/72s which means I work 24 hours then off for 72. So today is a work day, I have the next 3 days off. I meet with the oral surgeon this afternoon and they said on the phone earlier that I can hopefully have the teeth out sometime this week. Part of the problem is that when I go back to work, I can't have any drugs in my system whether it is a prescription or not because my job is considered public safety (EMT) and we get drug tested all the time. So I'm supposed to call my supervisor after I find out when my surgery is to figure this whole thing out. I'm opting for the IV sedation to get them removed rather than just a local lidocaine shot. The bad thing right now is that I have a Rx of vicodin sitting on my bathroom counter and I can't touch it all today for the pain I'm having right now because I might have to work tonight

Oh, good luck! I was one of the lucky ones - fast, easy recovery. My son didn't do as well...but then, I think men tend to be kind of whimpy about surgical stuff. Or pain in general.

Ugh. I had really impacted ones - the roots were twisted and hooked into bone. My jaw ached, my sinuses ached, it was aweful. BUT.... They knocked me out cold to have them out, it was over in 30 mins, and it healed no problem at all. The worst pain was a couple of weeks later when the bone started to heal and it really ached. Nothing Tylenol 3's couldn't beat tho! |

I had mine out when I was 18 (I think , that was a loooooong time ago)Anyway, I had the IV sedation, and the only thing I remember was going out to the waiting room while the final x rays were looked at to make sure everything was okay and telling my Mother how high I was and it was really fun! She was SO embarrassed! I don't remember much of the healing process so it must not have been that bad! to you!

I had all 4 taken out, 2 impacted, and it truly wasn't that bad. I stayed awake for it, although my mouth was numbed. Funny how dentristry hasn't changed much in 50 years. In WWI, they removed teeth by yanking them out with plyers. That is pretty much what they still do maybe the plyers have a fancy name but it's the same difference.Good luck, I hope it won't be too bad for you. I still have my teeth. All gnarled and weird looking.

Get them out on a Thursday. Tell the boss you need Th,Fri,Sat, and Sunday off. Stock up on liquids (broth, instant breakfasts, liquor). Get some good drugs. Talk to HR and the boss about residuals in your system. And read the hospital's policy on post-surgery medication. If they won't let you work while on post-op pain meds, then take a few vacation days! Come to maho with BH2 and I. I promise we won't talk shop. 8 more days I had all 4 taken out at the same time. General anesthesia, and puked my brains out for 24 hours but they're gone and I am glad.

What BH said!Take care of you. I've had 3 of 4 out. No worries, piece of cake each time - they say the last one is in a very bad position though....... |

Optimism is good, although follow BH's instructions, then get optimistic. I was one of the lucky ones - I had all four out, two were impacted, IV something that I still dream longingly about twenty years later, and I was back to 100% within three days. I ate yogurt only, I think for the three days I was working up to 100%, but that's not such a bad thing. Good luck with it! |

If they hurt, get them out and take the time off work you need. I had mine out over 2 instances, and wished I had just gotten them all out at the same time. Though it wasn't too bad - the first day was bad and then it got much better from there on out.Good luck! |

Well I didn't get to pick the day but they are coming out on Wed am at 8:30. A good friend of the family who is like my second mom is coming to take me there and bring me back as well as take care of me for a few days. I'm really nervous but hopefully things will go well. I don't have to be back to work until next Tuesday and ended up working last night. My mouth was hurting so bad though and I ended up not being able to sleep much on my shift even though we had a quiet one. What little bit of sleep I did get involved me falling asleep with my face on top of an ice pack. First thing I did when I got home was take some Vicodin and I'm now off to try and sleep a bit before company gets here. |

You will be happy when the meds wear off, the pain ceases, and you too can give wisdom teeth advice on TOC. You'll be fine.
