Well miss Hesta is a fine fine TB horse. A great TB broodmare, such as I purchased. But..... not much of a riding crittur. Which is not what I bought her for anyway.
So off for sale, she goes. I have no idea where to advertise her. I put her up on all the typical big sites- Equine dot com, horse topia, dream horse etc, with a text ad (she is a TB broodmare- noone needs a picture). I'm not overly certain how many TB folks use those sites? I'm going to contact my local JC club and see if they'll run an ad without my being a member. Any ideas?
Wish me luck and no idiotic nigerian scammails!!!!

Well, just from my experience, I typically overlook text ads. They're always at the bottom of the search results, and by the time I get to them, I'm usually 'searched out', if that makes sense.
I'd definitely suggest you upgrade (on at least Equine.com & Dreamhorse) to photo ads, with a nice picture of her. With horse sales the way they are right now, you need to try everything possible to make them stand out to people.

Did you put an add for her here (haven't looked at the Sales forum yet today, so sorry if you have!)? http://www.warmbloods-for-sale.com/Default.asp is another good one. I'm not into TBs, so I'm not sure if there are any sites specific for them, but I've always had the best results with Equine.com, Dreamhorse, & Warmbloods for Sale. Good luck!

well, I'd post a pic if I were you, people would like to see her conformation. Don't know where you're located, but in Ocala they have a little publicatio called Wire to Wire (used to anyway) and that is read by Tb people.

What about sport horse breeders ?

Good luck

Since you're in AB you could also try sites like gaitpost.com, or even the BC Horse Council forums - http://forums.hcbc.ca - since there are a fair number of posters on it.

Ibex, I forgot about Gaitpost- thanks! But I doubt any race people are looking there.
She won't need a pic b/c what is important is bloodlines - she is a cheap $2500 thoroughbred broodmare (which means a horse meant to produce thoroughbred race horses, not a ridden horse nor a sporthorse prospect, nor one to produce sporthorse babies. If she were adapt at any of that I would ride her or breed her to a warmblood myself), but thanks for thinking in broader terms. Sorry I forgot to mention- I am in Alberta, Canada.
Thing is, I am a sporthorse person myself and dont' know much about the race scene. I"m going to go to a race guy who is very nice and see what he has to say.
Ugh what an annoying situation!!!

I understand that she's being advertised as a broodmare, but I would think people interested in buying her for that would want to see a picture of her, so they could see her conformation, etc. Maybe that's just me though  ? Especially if you are advertising her online. Pictures on those sites = more views/more interest, regardless of what you're advertising (broodmare, prospect, finished horse, etc.).

Oh, no- I totally agree. Totally. But in the race industry, bloodlines are what is key. This much I do know. With her bloodlines, noone really needs to see her conformation. Which of course, they can when I email a pic. But the race people make decisions based on bloodlines first, everything else second. But the thing is, I doubt race breeder people are looking on sites like equine dot com for their next broodmare  So where do they go to get their horses? Apparently even the mixed sale here isn't very popular. I know she came off a claimer to enter the broodmare band originally. I dunno. :sigh: It is way easier to sell a riding horse: pic of a jumper jumping, a hunter over a hunter fence, a dressage horse competing or a broodmare conformation shot with a nice baby at side. But..geez.... what does the average joe do with a racehorse broodmare. Hm. :shoot:
So far, no spam save for one offer to advertise on a new little site. :luck:

Hmm.. who knows, maybe they buy/sell a lot through word of mouth? Don't they have TB specific auctions too?

Good luck! Even if you think a picture is irrelevant, I'd spring for it. You never know who is going to see it and otherwise they would have flipped right by. She might look like someone's long lost favorite horse they had as a kid or she just stands out from the crowd or who knows... for the minimal investment I think it's more likely to get you a good return. I'll cross my fingers, I hope she sells!

a cheap $2500 TB broodmare is not going to be interesting to a serious TB breeder.
why did you buy her, if she's not rideable and not good for sporthorse breeding?

For an inexpensive broodie, conformation is actually more important to me--I'd like to see something that actually looks like she can produce a runner, so I'd say that a properly stood-up conformation shot is actually a real plus.

You'd be amazed how racehorse people find their mares--and they do look on equine.com, dreamhorse, et al. A good friend got a nice hard knocking Allan's Prospect mare off EquineNow, who has turned out to be a stellar producer.

PT me--I might have a good contact for you.

Actually you sound like the loser, and you make the horse sound like one too.

I doubt the breeder of the horse would be happy to see you describe her as a "cheap horse".

But you could check out the Thoroughbred Times and Blood Horse. The Times has a classified section and the Blood Horse probably does.

Well, are you sure there is no market for the horse as a riding horse? My mare is an OTTB broodmare and I will be the first to admit that she probably wouldn't be a "great" riding horse because for many people. Mainly because I think she'd be a nightmare if she were stalled most of the time and she's a bit nervous so pushing her doesn't usually end with good results. But for me, she's a great horse. Excellent ground manners; my 7 year old could probably lead her around for hours and she'd put up with it.

What was your experience trying to get her rideable?; just curious what her issues are and maybe they aren't going to be a big problem for everyone.

And I'll jump on the picture bandwagon only because I agree that a nice picture catches more attention, whether you're looking for a riding horse or not.
