Recently, I have become a little concerned about the quality of the biscuits that I buy in the box for Cocoa, and have been wanting to make her some from scratch.
I jsust finished my first experiment, and boy does she love them! Cocoa loves sweet potatoes, so I baked a sweet potatoe and then mashed it. I used that for the base of the cookies, with whole wheat flour and oats. To that, I added one egg, a little oil, a little baking powder, a little bit of molasses and then enough beef stock from a box to get the right texture. I dropped the batter by spoonfuls on a cookie sheet. That's it. What a happy dog!
Obviously, these cookies will not stay on the shelf forever like the ones I buy, but they were so easy to make I figure I can easily make her a batch once a week.
Just thought there may be other that might want to try, or have recipe ideas.

Happy dog:

Every Christmas I make liver-bacon biscotti for all my doggie friends. They are apparently doggie crack, even the most finicky picky dogs go crazy for them. My friend's Great Dane stole them out of a sealed metal tin off the top of the refrigerator (don't you wish theter was a video camera set up for that one?). They are not the easiest or quickest thing to make though, but will keep for a long time if kept in a sealed container.

For simple and healthful, my chessie's favorite treat is raw almonds. He's diabetic, so we have to be careful on treats but he needs something to look forward to when he gets his injections twice a day. He loooves his almonds.

My Mom's corgi is diabetic and gets insulin injections twice a day. He gets a carrot with every one. He loves that!

Lar is highly insulted if I give him a carrot. He spits it out and looks at me like "How could you?"

Um, T, recipe for the biscotti???? Sounds like an interesting treat.

I have to be careful with treats as Leo doesn't eat grains (or, isn't supposed to eat them anyhow) and I try to keep his carbs below 12-13% but the corgis eat everything. I'd love to make yummy treats for them!

Leo loves soft peppermints (not on his low carb diet!).

The next batch I make I will change slightly so I can roll the dough out and use cookie cutters. It would be fun to make some bone shaped treats. Not that she cares about that!

That is definitely one happy looking dog! Yes I would like recipes too, my dog will eat anything but it's nice once in a while to make him a special treat.

Baby carrots is the preferred treat for both of my dogs. Weird.

Cocoa lives a good life (as do most of the dogs on this board me thinks!!).

I will have to try some of those cookies. We're eating the wellness ones that are sweet potato and fish I think? Not a huge hit, but when it's all you get, you make due. :teehee:

Um, T, recipe for the biscotti???? Sounds like an interesting treat.
Okay, here it is-

Liver Bacon Biscotti (doggie crack)

1 lb. chicken liver
1/2 pound bacon
1 cup corn meal
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 clove garlic or 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

Cook bacon and crumble into pieces. In food processor, puree the liver and garlic until smooth (hold your breath if you hate liver like me). Add corn meal, flour, crumbled bacon and 1/4 cup of bacon drippings to make a stiff dough. Sometimes the liver is wetter and I add additional flour to make a firmer dough. Form into long loaves (1-2 inches wide) and place on greased cookie sheets (I use Silpats- this stuff is really sticky) sprinkled with cornmeal. Bake 20 minutes at 350. Remove from oven and let cool slightly and slice into 1/4 thick slices. Return to oven, laying the biscotti on its side. Lower oven temp to 300 and bake another 30 minutes or so until toasted. Store in airtight container, IN A DOG-SAFE LOCATION.

Lar is extremely picky- he doesn't eat dog treats, and neither does my trainer's picky little poodle. They both go berserk for these. In fact, whenever I make them, Lar sits in front of the oven and stares at it for hours.

I don't have a food processor but have been wanting to buy one. I guess the liver treats will be my excuse to get one. I really want to make them.

Riley loves carrots too. My mom learned this when we brought him to her place for Thanksgiving and we figured allowing her to give him a few carrots couldn't hurt...until we discovered why the dog was spending so much time in the kitchen with his grandma. He was pooping orange from all the carrots!! So we had to limit the carrots.
Now you can't eat carrots around him without him flinging his paws at you to shake in a desperate attempt for carrots...

Those sound swell T! Leo can't have them as he is on a low carb diet, but I'll be making them for my 'girls' - the 2 JRTs I keep all the time! And I'm sure my corgis will get a couple as well... lol. Thanks!!!

Tarragon-
I finally got a shot at a cheap used food processor and I grabbed it! First thing I made was the liver biscotti treats.
Cocoa doesn't get to enthusiastic about any treats, but she loved these!
Thanks for the recipe, Cocoa highly recommends them for everyone.
