What are you doing TBF, anything? We really should do a girls spa day or something! or better yet....wine tasting!
I haven't even thought about it....April seems so far away! Except the week before my birthday I am being forced to go to Disney World with my dh & kids because he has a work function there. I know, I know....people love Disney. But I don't and we were there just last year....and we're flying in on Tuesday because he's *busy* Wed, Thurs and Fri so I'll get to have the kids all to myself at Disney & the parks for 3 days. :brickwall: Or, even better, with another mom who has kids about my kids' ages and I've met her once....met the kids...never. She seemed *high maintenance* the one and only time I met her sans kids.....so I can imagine she might not be my ideal traveling partner. :mallet:

Yeah, so I think my idea of the perfect 40th will be far away from my family. Want to meet at the Mohonk House?

I don't remember if you mentioned it, but what about Montreal? I have never been there, but with all the French influence I would think you would feel very far away!

TBF I would so meet you at the Mohonk House (and yes Doubledare it IS one of my favs!). I am going in March with a friend but am always up for a visit there!! and New Paltz is a really cute little town....oh oh and we can outlet shop at woodbury commons! Come on Sandy, let's do it!

As for me, the requirement really is that I cannot be home on my birthday. Doubledare I like your suggestions. I have some thinking to do!

Old Quebec City is marvelous!

So chic! On my one and only trip, I had only a semi-tractor to drive and although "everyone" told me to park outside of of the old parts and walk in, I was a moron and drove in. Crappy power steering. (Comment dit-on "moron" en francais?). Took me a couple of hours to get in and out, park far away and walk in :brickwall: Had a great meal, and a wonderful evening - although my arms were so sore!!

If it were my 40th, I would go sailing off of Maine for a week :cloud9:

I like the Maine Coast sailing idea but alas I don't eat seafood so I bet I'll starve! :)

FYI If anyone wants an awesome little boutique hotel in Montreal....Hotel Le Germain......sooooo awesome. I got to stay there on my business trips and i would literally not want to leave the hotel!

I am thrilled how many suggestions have been up here

I have heard that Newfoundland is amazing. The Shipping News was filmed on the east coast and the scenery and people and fun pubs and music etc...all amazing. It's one of our next destinations for sure

Or go to Banff, short trail ride in the foothills (non riding hubby even enjoyed this and I rarely ride while on vacation) and Spruce Meadows is there so you might be able to tie it in with a horse show there which would be incredible. You can also tour around when the horse shows are not on and walk around the big grass Grand Prix ring, go through the barns and check out the tack shop. VERY friendly folks. And lots to do in Calgary/ Rockies in general.

Bermuda is calling to me these days. High on my list :woot:

http://www.skytop.com/ in the Pocono's is a very cool place. We go there occasionaly for a weekend. It's very much like the place in Dirty Dancing. Very old fashioned and cool. The place is beautiful, the staff is amazing and there are tons of things to do.

Maya -- You mentioned the Outer Banks. I bet Currituck Island would be really lovely in June, and has tons of good restaurants, sight-seeing, hiking, as well beaches.

ok I am liking the idea of renting a house in the Outer Banks....but have no idea of what areas etc? I do have a 4X4 car and I see some of the houses require it, does that basically mean we will feel stuck out there on the beach? Help!

I think we're liking this idea to combine our family vacation idea with my birthday trip :)

Currituck Island is on the Outer Banks, although it's a bit of a hike -- past Cape Hatteras. The DH, dogs and I rented a beach house on Nags Head this past August and had a wonderful time. As far as needing 4x4 for some places, you wouldn't be isolated. I think Corolla is the place that requires it -- I think Just Magic went there this summer too -- but it's not remote. I think there are wild horses/ponies there, so they don't have paved roads in the immediate vicinity, but it's a quick drive back to the blacktop. Very close to Duck, which is pretty upscale as far as the OBX go -- some really nice restaurants and shopping. Each town has its own charms, and you really can't go wrong wherever you go, although I would suggest NOT renting around Kitty Hawk b/c that seemed more beach cheesy to me as we drove through.

I'm celebrating my 50th on the Cape this June. I love the Cape, but only before the kids get out of school and after they return. It's WAY too crowded during the summer. Sept. on the Cape is great.
