title pretty much says it all....I told my hubby I didn't mind turning 40 this year but I sure as heck don't plan to be in the country for it :) Unfortunately finances being what they are, I might have to be in the country but certainly not in my state!

My birthday is in late June, so the plan is a long weekend, 4 nights maybe, away from the kids, me and hubby somewhere awesome enough to take my mind off the big 4-0 and still not cost a fortune because we'll be doing a family vacation this summer to Cape Cod and can't really afford to do either!

Hubby whisked me away to Germany for my 30th.....but alas, may not happen this time around :)

Some info:
-we live in CT and it's got to be far enough away that i feel I've LEFT
-we tend to like adventurous vacations, sightseeing etc instead of sitting on the beach and spa-going
-Can we driveable or fly...but I hate to fly to has to be a direct flight and preferably short due to the -relatively short time frame
-Hubby does NOT ride, so no riding themes unfortunatelyJ
-Just to give you hints of our traveling tastes, we went to Italy for our honeymoon, Germany for my 30th, Belize for the heck of it, Cancun, Captiva Island, Key West etc. and then of course everywhere within 300 miles of CT :)

So.....help me out, what awesome trips can you recommend??

I was going to say Bermuda until you said no sitting-on-the-beach / spa vacation, which is my favorite kind. Well, you could still go...the adventure part is driving around on scooters and trying to avoid hitting the road toads!!!

I don't know exactly what you are looking for with your budget but I highly recommend the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC.

Gosh, I wouldn't know but I'm sure you could google it. It has been forever since I've been there. I would imagine the weather is nice because we used to go on vacations to Bermuda a lot when we lived in Mass. It is very pretty and very colorful. Nice beaches. Historical sites to visit. Yummy bermuda onions. Close enough for a long weekend but far enough to feel like you've gotten away from it all. If you like adventure you could always go diving or snorkeling or ... shopping!

You are SO CORRECT...I wasn't even THINKING the BIG 40...sorry..

well then how about the Atlantis??? On Paradise Island????

NO NEED TO SIT BY THE WATER....There is....Gambling, snorkeling, scuba, water slides..all adult areas...WONDERFUL FOOD...you can do the Dolphin Experience as well..but will need to take a short boat ride..

don't get me wrong, we can certainly sit by the water quite happily too but we do get bored easily :) Keep those suggestions coming!

No idea of cost, but what about the BH's favorite place, St. John? You have to fly to St. Thomas and take a ferry over, but it's SUMMER there in June, and the off season. Do you have any "hotel points," could you get a few free nights at the Westin there?

As for activities on the island, rent a car and drive/hike to far off beachs and SNORKEL for days at a time. When my husband and I were still just the two of us (instead of the four of us) we would hike to a bay, snorkel around to the next bay, then hike back. Believe me, that can take an entire day and wear you out sufficiently that all you long for is a cheeseburger, rum punch and bed. Since something like 75% of the island is national park, there is a lot of great hiking you can do. And if you hike to a beach, you get to swim as your reward. ;)

Given the economy, a lot of stuff is more "negotiable" than it has been in the past, so it is likely that if you search for good fares you can find them, and also finding deals in the summer on the islands should be easy.

Good luck!

How about a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas out of Bayone, NJ.

I also love to go to Washington, DC. We go every New Year. We stay in Old Town Alexandria, VA and visit the Smithsonian museums and shop and eat and party. It's the best place for New Years and would be terrific for a 40th Birthday too.

I just turned 40 in October and it's not that bad. I used it as an excuse to become more quirky and to wear louder colors and lots more jewelry.

Love it!! I'll be 40 in April as well.....I'm using it as an excuse to speak my mind. I'll eventually be one of those really opinionated old ladies that people just put up with because...well...they're old, right?

I have no great suggestions for vacation destinations. I always recommend Quebec City which is where we went on our honeymoon...but that's a fair haul driving from CT and not sure it's your idea of a "plane worthy" trip. :) We loved it, though, and want to go back. Such great food!!
