This was forwarded by a friend:

Subject: Donkeys Need Immediate Help

This has been sent to many folks in the area, but in case it missed you, and and you know of anyone who might be able to help...
It sounds like a very desperate situation.

Subject: help

Powhatan Sheriff's Office has seized 12 donkeys from an abusive home. There were 16, but 4 were found dead in the field from starvation on Monday. The State Vet has scored them 1 and on a 10 point scale the rest are a 2. They are in desperate need of foster homes for them. They would need to be picked up from here in Powhatan (possibly today), vet services (Pow Animal Control has a very small budget so we're not sure if funds would be available from this in, so you need to be willing and able to possibly foot the bill). This could possibly even lead to adoption, depending on what the judge rules, but the immediate need is for folks to take them in and get them some immediate care.

Here is the person to contact here at Animal Control in Powhatan:

Christine Bozar at 598-5672. You can tell her that you found out about it from me, Judy Ringgold.

Rachel, thanks so much for posting that!

I got an email late last night about this. Powhatan is about an hour south of us. I was on the phone with Powhatan Animal Control early this AM and was told that things are "reasonably under control" and that they believed that all the remaining donkeys had been placed. If this happened within 2-3 days, it would truly be amazing!

I spoke with someone nearby (listed in the email) this afternoon and he's going to keep me updated. I don't know anything in particular about the donkeys...size, sex, age, etc., and that's what I'm hoping to find out, and also if any of the people who have opened their barns for these poor donkeys need hay or a farrier, etc.

It sickens me that (allegedly) 4 donkeys died of starvation. Just sickens me.

Might as well break the news here and now...we have recently completed our estate planning and our farm will, upon our deaths, become the property of Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, the organization based in California and Texas, with satellite locations in other areas. We're hoping to lower our cow population considerably in the spring (please, oh please!) and transition some of the property to Peaceful Valley's operations when there is space/pasture enough for them to bring in some donkeys. When the time comes, I'm fairly certain there will be some published announcements of this and, if I have anything to say about it (I do :) a "grand opening" of sorts and you'll all be invited!

:jingles: :jingles: :jingles: for the donkeys and their futures.

OTF - that's awesome and amazing and just <3 <3 <3

If the cows are forced out in the spring :teehee: will you partake in the care of the donkeys that may reside there? Will the others get jealous or excited about maybe having some new friends?

Thank you folks. This has been well over a year in the making, but I have been cautious about saying anything until all the legal stuff was done.

We have three children (all adults) between us. Leaving the farm to them, in my opinion, would have created nothing but problems for all three. So we decided to bypass this "situation" and do what we believe in...the three "children" will not go hungry, trust me, but not one of them gives a hoot about the farm or the donkeys and cows.

Our donkeys (13 at last count) that remain here will have a home and be cared for, for their lifetimes, as well as a few cows (older ones that have earned their retirement).

It's a very difficult (and somewhat frightening) process, trying to plan and prepare for when one is no longer here. I'm 60 (and a half, yikes!) and while I haven't quite reached the point where I'm ready to let go of it all, I know we need to have something in place. Still have a lot of details to work out...donkeys are all microchipped, our vet has been consulted and is aware of the plans...there's still a lot to do. The farm will remain "intact" (deed of restrictive covenants, I think is what I'm trying to say) and hopefully will remain an agricultural property for rescue purposes forever. Who knows what can happen over the next 100 years or so?

A friend of mine sent me that email as well... I know where these donkeys were, it was near the barn where I used to board. I *think* the ones I used to see there were all miniature sicilians, but not positive. I live in Goochland, about 20 min. across the river from Powhatan.

If I had gotten this email before Trooper hurt himself, I would've certainly taken in at least one-- but I'm starting to rack up a big vet bill now. His "wife" at the boarding barn was a mini sicilian donkey and he LOFFED her. Of course, now he has replaced her with a welsh pony mare.

If these donks get to the point of adoption I'll seriously consider taking one, as long as my old man is recovered by then. :sigh:

I tried to reach the Powhatan Animal Control Office twice today, left one message, just so I could ease my mind that the 12 donkeys did indeed go to new homes. My friend at USERL said they'd been placed and that the State Vet's office did not call her back asking for help, so.....

Barn Girl, if you hear anything else about these donkeys, please let me know? If someone needs a pickup load of hay or something, I'm there! Nice to hear your Trooper liked his donkey ("wife" :teehee: )

And NOW there's another rescue in Isle of Wight County (horses and dogs)! :brickwall:
