My old man Trooper came in last night lame, I called the vet and set up an appointment for this morning. This morning I could tell something was up with his left hock (suspected this last night). Turns out he ruptured the peroneous tertius. :jaw: Prognosis ok after 2-3 months of stall rest.

He is already retired due to ringbone and sidebone in his left front. I've had him for 10 years and he's my main man, he's a total pet. However, he HATES stall rest. Right now my plan is to rotate the other two, one out during the day, one out at night, so he always has a buddy in with him. My dutch doors on that side face the pasture so the one left alone out can still see the ones that are in.

This is going to be a major PIA. Vet didn't have any resperine with him so I need to go pick some up to have on hand. He didn't seem to think it was a big deal, but I want to have it there because you know, if you need it, you NEED it RIGHT now.

Any suggestions for me or experience with this type of injury? I have never dealt with anything this serious nor have I had any experience with long term stall rest.

I'm glad it is something he can recover from, but spent the morning in tears... am so heartbroken for my boy and feeling sorry for myself trying to deal with this for the next few months. It is SO going to suck. :,(

Thanks for the hugs, CDE... I needed those!

I'm now worried that the pony will freak out when she is out alone tonight, she won't be able to see the others in the barn in the dark. Sheesh, I may wind up having to borrow a friend's pasture boarded horse to stay out and baby-sit whichever one is not babysitting Trooper. Luckily I know 3 people with pasture boarded horses they are doing absolutely nothing with. Don't really want to take on another mouth to feed, but if it will keep the peace, so be it.

I had a yearling that needed stall rest for a few months too...GET THE SHOT....SINCE you are not showing him...you'll have NOTHING to worry about...

I used Flofuazine..(THAT IS TOTALLY SPELLED INCORRECTLY) it lasts about 30 days...TAKES the edge off of being PUT UP...and let me tell you..YOU CAN TELL WHEN IT WEARS OFF...JUST see about getting another one a few weeks later...

SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THIS...IT'S NOT FUN...for anyone..

At least you don't have to change any bandages???

Well, last night didn't go well at all. I put the pony out around 6 and they were both OK. Came back up around 9 and Trooper was freaking out, spinning in the stall. Had worked himself up into a lather under his blanket. Of course, I had to bring the pony back in and take his blanket off, then he froze. Poor guy was shivering this morning. I was scared to leave a cooler on him because he was so freaked out, I figured he might end up tangled in it by morning.

This morning I left the pony in again, poor girl is going to have to suffer until I can get him calmed down. Hubby and I were discussing things last night and we may go get some round pen panels and make a small "pen" outside his stall and leave the dutch door open. Then he could be outside and be fence to fence with his girl. Of course that would have to be a weekend project since we both work.

The vet called in some resperine tabs at the pharmacy, I'm picking them up at noon (taking the afternoon off today.) Hopefully once I can get those in him, he'll chill some. If not, I don't know what to do. He was throwing himself against the wall last night. Worst case he'll have to go back out one way or another and it'll take longer to heal.

I'm wondering if I can get him calm enough, if I can hand graze him in the fenced barnyard. However, I may need a chain-- and I'm embarassed to admit, I've forgotten how to put the chain thru the halter.

He does have his leg wrapped to prevent more swelling... I'm supposed to change it tomorrow... may have to pay the vet to come back out and change it if he can't behave.

Ugh... I hate this. :tantrum:

I sure hope the resperine helps...I'm telling the the SHOT is the way to go...it's a one time deal..

I didn't read that you'll have to CHANGE bandages too...GOOD LUCK...BE CAREFUL that you are NOT stepped on..

I do feel sorry for you and him...I don't want to sound like DEBBIE DOWNER.....but it's a tough thing to be stalled up..and they the vet will say..ok you can hand walk him for 5-10 minutes...OK..WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO DO WITH HIM for the OTHER 23 Hours 50 minutes????? JUST breath..and cry into his mane.....

HE will LOVE all the extra attention...and I say...BE CAREFUL with the turnout..HE is suppose to be DOING NOTHING!!!!...even Hand walking and grazing him at this point is gonna be dangerous...

email me if you wish....I HAD TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT INDY ALMOST DAILY...or I'd go :psycho:

Well, last night went a LOT better. I got the resperine in him around 1PM and I think it started to work. Of course, the pony was in with him all day so that helped, too. My farrier came around 3:30 so McCue (the other old guy) and Lacey (the pony) were both in the barn with Troops. I let Lacey out around 5 and hand grazed Trooper for about five minutes in the barnyard, then put him back and brought McCue back in (had put him back out for a bit once the farrier was done with him). Then let Lacey back in at 6 and fed everyone and left them in for the night.

As long as the pony can tolerate just getting an hour of turnout a day, I think this is my tentative plan. I've made arrangements with my boss to leave a little early for the next week or so, so if I can get home by 5, she can have an hour out before dark. I think that's when he started freaking the other night, was once it got dark and he couldn't see her out in the pasture. I told her last night she may have to take one for the team! :P She is really a good little pony, and as long as she has hay, is pretty cool with whatever. Of course I may have to buy some "diet" hay to keep her from getting too fat during all of this, she's a fattie already.

I'm supposed to change the bandage today, that should be fun. Hopefully hubby can hold him still while I do it. If not, will either call the vet back out or just say screw it and leave it off. I'm tempted to leave the original one on for an extra day so I don't have to change it, think that would hurt anything? That way if I can't get a new one on, it's only one day shy of when the bandage is supposed to come off anyway (Sunday).

Thanks for all the jingles, they do help. Nice to know about that shot also in case we get to that point. Honestly right now, things are going pretty well, considering. It does help that I've had this horse for ten years and we know each other inside and out, we read each other pretty well.

Oh, one other weird thing... all day yesterday my left thigh was killing me, like I pulled a muscle on the front of it. I told hubby last night I had no idea what I did, other than maybe doing something when I was squatting down holding the xray stuff for the vet on Wed. Then it occured to me, my leg hurts in the exact same place Trooper's hurts, on the SAME LEG! His is his left hind. Is that bizarre or what? Either a major coincidence or he truly is my horsey soulmate, I guess. ;)
