Hi all - This has been the worst winter for me and I don't understand why I am sick the entire time. Perhaps you all can share any advice. Here's the backstory. I am 39, generally healthy, take Women's One a Day every day, have mild asthma that I use an inhaler for only when sick or exercising. I take Prevacid for acid reflux and that's basically all I take on a regular daily basis. I got bronchitis in late September and was put on Mucinex and Z pack antibiotics. I got better but never got rid of the mucous and cough even though I've basically been taking the mucinex every single day. I have since also added to the mix, an ear infection which I got about 3 weeks ago (prescribed augmentum & nasonex), and then this past weekend, strep. I am now on Augmentum again, so three rounds of antibiotics in the past few months. Now that the strep is retreating, my yucky miserable cough is back as is congestion in my middle ear, causing me hearing loss (temporary of course). I have young kids (6 yr old twins) and my daughter has also had the ear infection and strep, so I know where i get the illnesses, but why this year? why am I so suceptible this year?? I don't eat alot of fruit because it generally hurts my stomach and I don't take Vit C as a separate vitamin, should I? I wash my hands until the skin is practically falling off and I use purell and wipes for hands when we've come out from the doctor or food store or whereever. HELP! I just ordered a new multi-vitamin from Andrew Lessman and am thinking about adding more supplements (certainly need more C somehow). Any other suggestions?? I haven't been 100% healthy since September and quite frankly I am getting downright pissed off about it. |

Ugh, sorry to hear that. Being sick once is no fun let alone repeatedly. Has your doctor run any tests to see if your immune system is impaired? Could you have mono or something like that? Ever since I got mono in high school if there is a cold/sinus infection/strep within a 3 mile radius from me, I'll get it. It really sucks. |

yeah I need to do a physical. I've been to the doc three times in the last three weeks but I'm only seeing the PA so he's just dealing with the current symptoms. I am planning to do a physical in the spring.... For now, doing the best I can do get some vitamin c in me! |

How is your stress level? I find I am WAY more likely to get every cold/flu when I am stressed. De-stressing is easier said than done, but I think it does have an impact on overall health. Hope you feel better soon! |

I think you're still trying to sell your house right (like me)? If so, I can say MY stress level is way way up! That probably has something to do with it. |

I forgot to mention that I am really not very stressed though our house is still on the market I have pretty much given up. I get a solid 8+ hours of sleep every day, and work from home. Kids are in school most of the day so life is actually pretty relaxing

Can you push up the time frame for your physical? Go now instead of the spring? |

I'd schedule that doc appnt and see whats up. Sounds like your bod is being hit hard by something - are you able to get out of the house every day for fresh air? I mean like for more then a few hours, or did you travel and then feel better only to go home and be 'sick'? I really believe getting outdoor air every day is very important to physical health. it sux to be sick.

I haven't traveled and unfortunately I am not outdoors too much, because it's been so freakin' cold and snowy. I try to get out for a bit each day, but in the warmer weather I walk outside for about 30 minutes each day, haven't been doing that for months now because of the combo of being sick and crappy weather. I know I should do the physical...but I am scared

Another vote that your immune system is a bit compromised. So you have any allergies -- like to dust or mold? If so, perhaps your HVAC system needs to be checked out, e.g., filter cleaned, humidifier serviced and/or ducts vacuumed out? I'm allergic to dust, and had a string of illnesses like yours several years ago that just wouldn't clear up until after I had my ducts cleaned out. I didn't have them cleaned because of being sick. It's just that after I had them cleaned I finally was able to get totally well, so my best guess is that the excess of dust blowing around the house was stressing out my immune system. |

Delia, good point and I do have allergies (dust) but I have electric heat so no duct work etc. I usually have issues in the winter because the electric heat is so drying but never this severe. |

I was sick for pretty much 2 months last winter. I'd get an ear infection/strep, get antibiodics, get better, then a week later I'd have swollen lymph nodes again. Plus I was excessively tired. I got a mono test (they have those now, I had no idea til they asked if I'd allow one), came back negative, but was told that sometimes if your body has fought off some of it, it can come up negative even if it's still in your system.. did that make sense? Anyway, that's what I was diagnosed with in the end, since I had all the symptoms. I did 2 rounds of amoxicillin, and then a z-pack, which is what ended it all finally. I was still tired for a good 3-4wks. afterwards, but gradually got my energy back. Dr's told me I should consider getting my tonsils removed, since I had a lot of throat related stuff. They said your tonsils can hold bacteria, which can continue to make you sick even after antibiodics, etc. I considered it then, didn't do it, and haven't had a reason to since. Also, I remember when I was in the hospital doing on my tests for my low BP, the nurses were talking about the vitamins they take. They said they swore by Zinc to boost their immune systems, so that's a thought. I'd definitely get in to the Dr. though! Sounds like something's going on that your body can't fight off. Thanks guys, I just made an appt to see my doctor (my real doc not the PA!) on Thursday at 2:00 PM. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of what's going on. Thanks so much for the feedback and support

Hey sorry to hear you are not doing so hot! Could just be you're having a bad run this winter... but I agree a physical is a good idea, and perhaps your doc can see if there is something underlying going on with your immune system. You haven't been on steroids at all in the last 6 months have you? Also be careful with the antibiotics... if you can avoid taking them do it! They can wreak havoc on your gut and you don't need anything else on top of what you are dealing with. Hope you are on the mend ASAP!!!!!!!!!! hugs! |
