There are tons of balls. There are 10 or 11 official balls, the ones that the Obamas & Bidens attended. But then there are bazillions of unofficial balls - ranging from more cocktail party type affairs to full on balls. I believe most of the State balls were Monday night, then the regional balls and the other official ones were Tuesday. And the smaller ones started at least as early as last Friday. We were going to go to one put on by Georgetown, but it was money we didn't need to spend while saving for the wedding. Edited by Indy, Jan 21 2009, 11:20 AM.

Interesting...I know she was definitely going to both balls Tuesday, but I'm not sure if they were "official"or not. Her husband is an astronaut and flew the last mission, so apparently that's why they were invited. She hates crowds and dressing up. I told her she was heading to the wrong place!!

Jaci -- It has been non-stop ball-o-rama in DC since Saturday! As Indy said, from Saturday through last night there were oodles of unoffial balls and parties put on by various groups, mostly with someone from Hollywood hosting or sponsoring, e.g., the Creative Coalition Ball, the Green Ball (actually, two of them), Roots Ball, Latino Ball, Purple Ball, etc. Some were very pricey, and there was such a glut of balls that a few got cancelled at the last minute because they didn't sell enough tickets. Then last night there were 10 "official" balls that were put on by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, which the President and VP were guaranteed to attend, e.g., Neighborhood Ball, Eastern Ball, Western Ball, Southern Ball, Mid-West Ball, Obama Home States Ball, Biden Home States Ball, etc. So maybe your friend went to the Southern and Western balls. The Neighborhood Ball had a huge line-up of talent like Beyonce, Shakira, and Sam.I.Am performing. And I think J. Lo and Marc Antony performed at the Southern Ball. The Grateful Dead (minus Jerry, of course, at least in body) played at the Mid-Atlantic Ball. But sadly, all we got at the Biden Home States Ball, as far as music, was some orchestra that did covers. It was like a really excellent wedding band -- the Obamas came in right after they played Play that Funky Music White Boy. Like I said, it was a bit surreal! |

Late to the party as usual, but add me to the list of folks who are thrilled (for once!) at the outcome of the election and so excited about what our new president has already done for our country. He is truly an inspirational individual. I don't see him as being a particular color. He's just an outstanding person who I feel came along at the right time for the benefit of all of us. I could listen to him talk for hours, and it is so refreshing to have a public figure with such a gifted, educated command of the English language. All of us who voted for him, and those who didn't, should now work together as he has asked us to do. We should do our part to make our communites stronger and better places in which to live. Several of my friends and I are investigating volunteer opportunities so that we can back up our votes with action. And I now confess to being a CNN junkie!!!! |
