I got teary during the inauguration and during his speech--and the Reverend who gave the Benediction was phenomenal. I was sitting next to the Dean of the college today and she said that she thought the Reverend marched with Martin Luther King Jr. I didn't catch his name; does anyone know if this is true?

Today, I am not only happy to be fortunate enough to enjoy the rights and freedoms permitted to me as an American--I am proud to live in this country.
I'm late to this party, but since I was at the barn all day with the horse dentist I'm watching C-Span's recap. It's amazing to see all of those people, stretching for miles, braving the cold and crowds to be a part of today. I'm feeling very proud and hopeful for our country today.

Renn, it's the Rev. Joseph Lowery, and he did march with MLK and was very active in the Civil Rights movement.

What happened to Mouse from his rider:
Yep, unfortunately. In the mass chaos of mounting and getting out to
the merge area for the parade, everyone got separated. Mouse hates
carriages and unfortunately, threw a small tizzy as we passed one
(which we should have never been near the carriages in the first place
because they were not in our division). He backed into a parked truck
got his foot caught in the winch attached to the bumped and went down.
He was a good egg about it and laid their pretty calmly (with a little
help from ketamine) until we were able to disassemble the winch enough
to get his foot loose. We got a police escort back to the equestrian
center where we met Amy and Barb picked him up in her trailer to take
him to the vet. Amy said that it isn't as bad as the parade vet first
thought and he only needed some stitches. No bruised tendons or
ruptured tendon sheaths. Phew!! I'm fine as I bailed once he was going
down and landed on my feet.

As for the no pants - funny. :) Those would be my shapely legs
because I threw off my apron once I was down. Yes, I know that I was
wearing tan breeches with a navy costume but they were full-seat and
warm and the coat and and apron covered it all.

Major props to Days End Horse Rescue for the help, the Ft. Meyer vets,
Kate and Matt from SOLA who were two of our ground people and a bunch
of other people with radios and helpful information.

I'm now going to go take a very loooooooong hot shower.

Deb
---------------------
And from his owner:

Hey ladies
Thanks for al the well wishes and worrying! Yes! Mouse is really OK. Quite a bit of road rash and only about 5-6 stitches, numerous scrapes all over, and I'm sure very sore if it weren't for the good drugs he was given.
He has won the "best horse" award from his Vet and care team on the Eastern Shore.
He had a great support team and an EXTREMELY well orchestrated rescue.
Deb could not raise me on my cell phone so they called the Hospital directly. I got an overhead page to the hospital operator.....silly me I'm thinking my boyfriend has sent me flowers and they can't figure out what department I work in. Imagine my surprise when I'm greeted with a "this is sergant ____from the US Army and I'm the Vet on scene at the inaugural parade." My mind flooded with the worse scenario and the thought of the euthanasia form that I 'had' to sign. She told me he had numerous cuts several that were deep and she wasn't sure if he had cut his tendon sheath. After a moment of panic a plan of attack was started. Mouse was to be escorted.....yeah full lights and everything back to the Equestrian Center. I called Barb Thelen and she and her hubby Tom were willing to come down to PGEC and pick us up. The ER was very well staffed and it was allowed for me to leave. I met the trailer just as it pulled in and I was able to be the one to lead Mouse off and out. I was thrilled that he was walking and actually bearing weight on his leg. He was well bandaged and obviously drugged. We put him in his stall and he proceeded to munch on hay and act like this was no big deal. Barb and Tom showed up we then hauled him another 70 miles to my Vet on the eastern Shore. My vet had really wanted me to take him to the Vet school in Leesburg thinking a tendon sheath was more than she could handle. I told her I wanted to start with her and see where we needed to go. Smart move for me for when we took off his dressing things looked much better than I could have ever imagined. A couple of cuts with some deep areas that got stitched, numerous scrapes, and he cut both boulbus areas of his hoof.
He is now tucked away all cozy and warm with his regular barn buddies and was last seen snarfing down his grain.
Kudos and Thanks to Barb and Tom Thelen you just cannot get better friends. To Deb Fuller for keeping her head in a bad situation and to the folks who volunteered to be on hand for an animal emergency.
As Deb put it...we went to be part of history but decided to make a little of our own.
We'll keep you all updated on his progress!
Say a few prayers...
Amy

We went to the Biden Home States ball last night! It was fun to get all dressed up, and the vibe was very uplifting as we walked with the crowd to the venue where our ball and several others were being held. We were held by the police at a street corner in the cold for a LOOONG time, but it was to wait for Obama's motorcade to pass and the crowd went wild when he speeded by. Once inside we snacked on some seriously bad food (crackers and cubed pepper jack, anyone?), made a bee line for the bar, danced a little to an R&B cover band, and started to wonder why people want to go to these things so badly. Then we noticed people starting to form a bit of a crowd in front of the stage where the Obamas and the Bidens eventually would appear, so we staked out a spot very close to the stage. And that's when it got really fun. Although we stood there for HOURS waiting (seriously, I stood in the same spot for 3 hours -- in heels), we started chatting with the people standing around us, and shared stories about volunteering, fundraising, knocking on doors for the campaign, etc. Everyone feels so hopeful and energized by this Administration and ready to continue to volunteer in our communities and do whatever else it takes to help get our country back on track. It was really motivating. And then the Bidens arrived for a short speech and abbreviated spin around the dance floor. The Obamas came a little later on and did the same. The President's speech was brief but good, and it was both thrilling and a little surreal to see them in person. But I really felt for them -- they were very gracious, but they looked exhausted and waaay ready for the public part of this great day to be over and done.
