I am not sure exactly what to think about my most recent exchange with the owner/trainer of the barn that my horse is at . Due to being unemployed in SC, I accepted a temporary position in Florida to be able to pay the bills while I am looking for another permanent job.... I have been boarding at the current facility for 4 years now, always been a good boarder, and always paid my bills. The barn is not typically ever full, and I wrote the following as an idea, and would just like to hear your thoughts on it. Was I in the wrong for asking? Its fine that she said no, but I feel like I am being made to feel bad for even asking.... I wrote: I have a friend down here that owns a farm that said I could bring my horse down for a couple of months while I am here in exchange for throwing feed in the mornings…. If I left a deposit with you in the meantime, would I be able to bring my horse back in May, when my job here is finished? Thanks She wrote back: I am a little uncomfortable holding a pasture board spot. Please understand that I am happy to have your horse here for as long as you want to stay, but I don't think its fair for me to have him coming and going. Again, I am happy to have him here for you for as long as you like, but I already feel like I am in an awkward spot just being asked to do this. I hope your new job is working out well and you like it down there. Edited by naters, Jan 16 2009, 01:05 PM.

Let me make sure Im reading this right: You want to move your horse somewhere temporarily so you can afford it. You wont be able to keep her where she is now because you cant afford it. Current barn owner doesnt want horse to leave and come back. So... tell her that if you keep your horse with her, you will throw feed in the am but you cant pay her for board. There really shouldnt be a problem to take your horse out and bring it back after a few months if your horse is properly vaccinated and cared for. Does she not let new boarders in? It just doesnt make any sense that this would be a problem. Not to mention it would be nice to RIDE your horse while your in Florida. Edited by OpticalIllusion, Jan 16 2009, 02:23 PM.

Want to bring horse to florida so I am not paying for board on a horse I am not riding at all. Willing to pay a monthly fee to her to allow me the option to come back as a boarder (when she has an opening). What she is saying is that if I leave, I cannot come back under pasture board. I can only come back under full training board. She has horses coming and going all of the time from the farm. Consignments, etc. |

I was wondering if I did something horrendous by asking. |

No, what your asking makes total sense. Dont see why it would make her "uncomfortable". |

I think her response is bizarre. Could she have misunderstood what you were asking? It's not super clearly stated... If you were asking "can I pay you a fee to 'hold' my pasture boarding spot until I return," that's NOT an odd request at all and I don't see why it would make her incomfortable... unless maybe she thought you were taking your horse somewhere where you might be exposed to disease. But that's not the case. I mean, she can say "no" if she wants, but why would a simple request like that make her feel uncomfortable?! I think she MUST have misunderstood what you were asking?! |

Hmmmm - I've never had a barn owner turn down money for nothing. Maybe she didn't understand what you were asking? Or maybe she doesn't really like to have pasture boarders and would just rather you go somewhere else? (I don't mean to offend!) |

I did not get what you said you meant or what you said she meant from the first exchange. I agree with VXH, none of it was clear. Where did she say training board? I know if I left my barn (which at the moment if full), I would have to pay to keep my stall. I guess that is really not the case with pasture board, but if you are trying to save money, sending board payments back to her does not seem wise. I would move my horse to Florida, save the money and find a new place when I got back. |
