http://www.statenews.com/index.php/article/2009/01/msu_officials_ban_circus_from_breslin "The policy change also could affect the rodeo and Lipizzaner Stallions show scheduled to take place in February at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education." We have tickets for this event!!!!!!! And the true b@st@rd thing about this is the Circus gets @ $ 21,000 for charities each year. Partial copied letter: MSU is a Land-Grant institution with its roots in agriculture. If Mr. xxxxx will so readily cave in to a handful of "activists" on the circus issue (who declare that riding horses is "animal slavery"), then how far down that slippery slope are we already? I realize that circus animals are an issue, but these people have bigger fish to fry--US. The same group is actively targeting the MSU rodeo, and has set its sights on the Lipizzaners as well. Dr. xxxx, if you think it appropriate, please forward this to others in the College of Agriculture. I do not have an e-mail address for Dr. Martiniuk, but perhaps you could forward it to her, and to any others who may be interested. Thank you for your attention. I plan to contact MSU and Mr. xxxxx, and urge others to do the same. Sincerely, xxxxx End copy |

Good God. I don't like circuses at all. I agree with PETA that cruelty is rampant at circuses. BUT if PETA really wants to end animal cruelty, they ought to end all use of animals in performances. Do they not picket horse shows because they get lots of donations from show competitors? Why not picket dog shows? Big donations there too? I have known show dogs that got fed big (handlers called them "trace") amounts of arsenic to encourage coat growth. Never saw one PETA protestor at a dog ring. I'd like to know PETAs definition of animal cruelty. There are a lot of bad, bad, bad horse and dog trainers that have tainted their industries. How come PETA doesn't direct their efforts to animals that suffer? My favorite horse I ever owned was a Lippizaner mare. I hope those horses aren't abused. DQ, I hope you still get to go!!! |

I said this on TOB as well, but if you want to put out flames, it's important not to fan the flames by getting the facts wrong. According to that article, PETA didn't do anything besides generally indict the circus on their web site (and really, who pays any attention to PETA's web site)? The group in question is SPAR, a student activist group at MSU. And while I'm sure SPAR is probably kookoo, I'd like to see some honest objective evidence of how the horses are cared for at the circus, Lippizaner shows, etc. Just out of my own curiousity. It's probably fine and no worse/better than how horses live at the track, but who knows until we see some actual information. |

BH1, old friend, I usually am in complete agreement with you. But we do not want the PETA crazies involved with anything animal, because their goals are NOT about saving the animals, but about power and money. They don't want us to have our pets, horses or anything else. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that every part of the animal industry doesn't have some things that need changing. But 1) these people won't get that done, they'll just ban the activity completely and 2) they don't work towards more humane treatment. They work towards eliminating animals being in our care AT ALL. Work for animal welfare all you can. But don't encourage or wish for PETA involvement. |

I'm no huge fan of circuses or zoos, for that matter, but my dh lobbies for Ringling Brothers and has done the behind the scenes tours at their elephant breeding facility in FL and their headquarters. For one thing, they have the largest population of Asian elephants in the world in FL....apparently they are very fragile and not thriving in the wild anymore; endangered and [I believe] feared to become extinct in the wild in the near future. My dh actually got to see one of the bull elephants and [gulp] watch them collect elephant semen for AI breeding. [Quite a sight, from what he says!] Anyway, he walked away from his behind the scenes experience thinking very highly of Ringling Bros. and their care of the animals he saw; now...of course PETA may not believe that AI breeding of captive "wild" animals is a good thing, but I think in general they are very, very careful with their elephants, at least. We attend the circus when it comes to town [we are sort of obligated to go] and I have to say I think the animals all look happy & healthy, in good working condition and in comparison with horse racing, for example, no worse for the wear. [I'm hoping to get to see the elephant facility some day when we're in FL!] Personally the worst exhibit I ever saw was in a zoo, not a circus. Some of the conditions in which zoo animals are kept are terrible, IMO. I remember the "Cat House" at the Denver Zoo about 10 years ago. So sad. Hopefully those big cats had more to their "habitat" than what we saw....but somehow I don't think so. |

LaurieP, I don't WANT the PETA people to show up, I am simply curious why they pick specific battles. You know very well we have seen horrid things in the showjumping world. I wonder why PETA saves chickens and pigs, and ignores the wire, tack rails and injectable caustics Ignores the equitation stars who are so dehydrated they almost stop at "the water" to drink...I wouldn't want PETA to picket my tackroom but some "trainers" could use a visit. love you |

GOOD GRIEF!!!! I am not a "circus" fan but not for any 'one' reason. However circuses depend on their animals they work hard to train them THEY TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!! When organizations like SPAR or PETA complain about their "living in a cage" what do they want us to do? Let potentially very dangerous animals free??? As far a the rodeo and lipizanners go I don't think those organizations understand the value of these animals Of course they are going to get the best care. My opinion of rodeos at least as far as the broncs and bulls go. The animals are fine, they work 8 seconds and are done. I think someone should do something about the cowboys (and girls) who get bucked off and trampled, perhaps BETC (Bovine for the Ethical Treatment of Cowboys) yes I am being as ridiculous as they are but the cowboys get the bad end of the deal in reality if they do not stay on. I love Professional Bull Riding, Extreme bulls those are expensive pampered animals who love their job. I have yet to see a rodeo horse (at least in a "real" rodeo) that does not have an awesome coat, and fantastic musculature. Yup sounds like bad care to me. |

Still better if we attempt to handle this internally by not being so afraid to speak up. Perhaps they haven't show up only because they don't know, but f they find out and begin showing up, well, life as we know it with our show horses will be over. I don't want abuse in the h/j world either, but even more I don't want PETA, HSUS or their ilk to even have us on their radar. Although I fear it may be too late for that... Personally, I support the ASPCA (national) and the Richmond (VA) SPCA with a monthly donation. I respect their outlook on our relationship with animals, they just sponsored the Syracuse Invitational and then the GHM Horsemastership Clinic and sent speakers and clinicians who were quite good. Remember Agent Joe Pentangelo from Animal Precinct? He and his wife Joanne both came and were absolutely wonderful and very warm and friendly. The president also came and spoke and we chatted for awhile about PETA/HSUS. They were a great presence at the events and we are lucky to have them working with us rather than against us. They don't want to eliminate horse activities. |

I used to have a less than positive outlook on circuses but after seeing the independent film Circus Rosaire and meeting some of the family I have most definitely changed my mind. Of course I am sure that not all animal acts treat their animals with the best of care, but many do. And these people love their animals and haven given their lives to the care of their animals. If you ever get to see the film its amazing. http://www.circusrosairemovie.com/ I will qualify this by saying, I am very close to the uncle of the filmaker. He wrote and preformed all the music for the film and I have been to a couple film festivals to see it with them. BUT, it really does show the grand care they give their animals and how happy they are. |

There are incidents at dog shows. Some friends of mine raise toy dogs (only breeding replacements for their own), they show them to their championships, go on for obedience and agility titles, and then retire them to their own pack at home after neutering. When they go to a show they have to stay with the dogs because they take the current show dog and a few buddies just for company or to show in obedience-they can't leave them alone for a second because people will let them loose and not care that the poor dogs can't survive traffic and other hazards. PETA supports the more radical activists that free laboratory animals and would gladly end all pet exploitation including as pets and as service animals (being a seeing eye dog is apparently exploitation) and want all pet ownership ended. I can't imagine how long my elderly couch potato would live fending for himself. |
