So DH's horse has a 'fragrence' that says to me he NEEDS cleaning. I have not eyeballed the offending part b/c it seems to be dark when I feed breakfast and dark for dinner too. And the last thing he's thinkin' of a food time is dangly bits and heading to the rest room. :innocent:

Soooooo - as this is my first gelding, how do you clean the dangly bits in this kind of colder then heck weather????

I just can't see doing the warm water wash of mr willie in the wicked winter weather - suggestions please?

If I can smell him I am sure its not good. Do I just go for the Excalibur or what???

Thanks!

WELL first of all....GOOD LUCK...your hands are gonna STICK to him with it being sooo cold.. ;)

I think Gunnar is peeing on himself ON PURPOSE.....HE LOVES for his beans to be taken out... :teehee:

I have used just plain old mineral oil and water-based lubrication...THAT way, if you DON'T GET all of it OFF...it WON'T hurt him...NOT AT THE SAME TIME....use either/or

I would have a few buckets of warm water on hand too...if it's toooo cold...TALK ABOUT SHRINKAGE :point:

HH :)

I take surgilube ( I am sure there is something similar at CVS) put it up in the cave, ride, and then take a towel and remove the cob webs. That usually tides us over until spring when I can do a little sedation and really clean him up

I have had geldings for years and don't remember ever worrying because of a smell. Either you have avery sensitive nose, I have a lame nose or there's something not so good going on...... Maybe a combination of all of them :innocent: I would certainly not worry about it for the next few horrendously freezing days. It's supposed to be a tad warmer at the end of the week, maybe take a gander then :o

If you use KY Jelly, you can do the cleaning sans water.

I just worry because it's SO cold these days. Right now it's -21 C (-2F) here, probably not much warmer where DQ is. Frozen fingers, etc :o won't be fun.

Put him in your garage and do it? :innocent:

Even with a non water product, I would be worried that it would freeze while in there. I would call the vet, see what (s)he suggests.

Yeah, if you just apply some oil, sometimes they will just clean themselves somehow! Otherwise, you can just wipe it out good after the mineral oil has softened everything up. Don't forget the bean. I swear in the cold weather they would rather pee on themselves that drop it to freeze! Water based lube works just fine too... Just make sure whatever you get had nothing irritating like die, fragrance, etc. That way it won't cause a problem if you can't get it all out.

Diet Coke alll over the keyboard!!

Yeah, I'll prolly wait for the weather to warm before I go cob-webbing :teehee: :teehee: Even if the 'product' is warm when we begin by time its in the area to be cob-webbed it'll be shrikage-inducing cold!!

But seriously, this horse has the worst smelling eliminations - poo, pee and his sweat is EWW-DE-EEEEWWW.

Last night I fed him, gave him pats and then :o :o :o whoof!

I'm thinking once it warms a bit, then I'll 'web. Seriously y'all don't SMELL that nastyness??

This may sound a little crazy, but sometimes if you just reach in there the crud will come off with very little coaxing.

If it were me, I'd put on a latex glove and go up there and see what would come out easily/quickly. Then I'd take some baby wipes and go to town (very minimal moisture in a baby wipe). Then I'd wait until better weather to get the rest with KY Jelly and an inside-out cotton sock!

Well, if I were you I would tell the Milk Man to deal with it! :teehee: :teehee: :teehee: :teehee:

Actually, I would have the vet out and have THEM deal with it! :innocent:

My vet takes care of that bit every Spring when teeth get done.

OMG, I just remembered why you are my best friend ever.   And why I loaned you the Dormosedan. :innocent:

Seriously, I use Vaseline in these trying times. That at least keeps everything from sticking, ya know?

Ding Ding Ding! And we have a winner! My vet generally does it when he does teeth in the Spring, and I take care of the in-between with KY and a clean rag. If it's warm, like between April and September, he gets his cave :teehee: gently rinsed with the hose (he doesn't drop unless he's peeing. EVER.) In this weather, it's too cold to mess with. If you have a special, erm, odiferous concern, maybe call the vet to drug him and take care of it...
