My horse has grumpy moments when I ride in the winter in our large indoor arena. He gets so upset but works out of it as we flat and is fine when jumping. He is on meds for ulcers but I was wondering if anyone has any tricks that they use with a horse that has ulcers? He is in great shape and is a hunter so not much stress

What is he on? Just had some conversations w/ my vet about ulcers and did a trial of ranitidine just to see what would happen. In our case we didn't see a huge difference (so it is likely not ulcers) but my vet said ulcer-prone horses often have flare-ups from a variety of factors (maybe cold?) But if the dosage isn't enough, maybe it's not preventing the flare-ups? For our trial we did 10 300mg tablets 3 x day. |

How much turnout is he realistically getting? even an hoiur or two less than he's used to will effect their attitude. Also think about it, he goes from his stall to the indoor, and if the weather and footing are ok, to the paddock. Are there trail nearby? Can you and a buddy go for a walk around the property? How about just hanging in the indoor for 15 20 minutes before tacking up? Go up sometime and not ride but just hang out and beauty treat him. Bring up a favorite niece or horse crazy neighbor kid and teach them how to groom, pick feet, etc. Your guy will most likely love the attention. If it is his ulcers, try a bit of neighlox. All in all, winter can be a very boring time for horses, so try something a bit out of the norm. |

he is on normal turn out and omezol ( not sure how to spell) he gets 10cc a day and I give him more when he gets grumpy for a week. He gets so bad in the cold so yes when it gets cold he get grumpy he isn't a hard horse to ride and well behaved most times he is still growing so that has something to do with it. I am going to try to take him outside for some walks but it has been so cold and like my horse I hate the cold thanks for the ideas

Are you riding him on an empty stomach? Giving him a half pound or pound of soaked alfalfa cubes before you ride might help him buffer the acid in his tummy. |

just wanted to give a update.... Over the last few days I haven't ridden cause of the cold. I have hand walked for 20 minutes both days and increased his ulcer meds and a lovely lady (BLack Tack) gives him tums when she is out. Just wanted to say tonight I walked him for 15 minutes before I got on and just had the best ride so I just wanted to thank everyone and am so relieved that this cold spell is over at least for a few days
