A friend and I are considering going this route to save some cash... (vet comes and does vaccinations = $150... seems steep when we can buy the same IM vaccine for $20... ).Has anyone done this? What protocol and products do you use for horses in a boarding environment, with horses in the barn going out to shows or coming in for training? Are there any you CAN'T give yourself? I suspect I'll have to get the vet to do WN for insurance reasons... Edited by TarynJ, Jan 10 2009, 04:19 PM.

I have my vet do them for three mostly stupid reasons: 1. He'll be out to do the Coggins and West Nile anyway (which I need for insurance), and since that's already costing me an arm and a leg, it's not a whole lot more to throw in a few more shots. 2. I do not feel emotionally nor experientially equipped to administer epinephrine if there's a vaccine reaction. 3. My horse is mostly healthy, so I rarely see my vet, and giving him my vaccine business is a cheap way to keep myself on his Nice List instead of the Naughty List. Instead of cutting costs with the vaccines, I'm cutting costs this year by hauling to his office. That way I get to skip the $65 farm call charge. |

I do my own, as does my barn owner, but we give our shots when the vet is out to do all the boarder's horses so he is already there if something goes wrong. He has to do the rabies and West Nile vaccines for our horses since my state does not allow the sale of those, and pull blood for Coggins. I love our vet, he's very accommodating. |

I do my own. I usually have the vet do any vaccine I can't order (i.e. rabies) and have him pull a coggins. This way I can space my vaccines out over a couple days and not administer all in one vaccines. My horse had a reaction to fort dodge vaccines one year so I try to steer away from their products as well. |

I say Go for it...and as everyone has said...you have to have him/her out to give Rabies, West Nile and pull the coggins... DO YOU GIVE STRANGLES?????? JUST DOCUMENT what you gave them and WHEN....that is VERY IMPORTANT.. AND IF YOU DO THIS.....and you are feeling like it didn't work, or that because you bought them at the feed store they were no good..Second guessing yourself...etc....you can call the vet out later and have him/her do them again....I SWEAR, my vet wants to do them every 6ish months.. I have gone into the Tractor Supply and purchased the pneumabort shots...I believe they are Fort Dodge...and give them to my mares.. GOOD LUCK HH

I have 15 horses so I do my own. We don't do rabies in my area. I do my own West Nile, the vet's usually use the cheaper west nile I buy the better one. It would be so expensive to have the vet do it not to mention inconvient. I order the vaccines through the mail and it's a lot cheaper. Just never reuse needles, ever. Keep track of what you do. I give them in the neck instead of the butt because I'm by myself and I think it's safer. |

My mare has adverse reactions to the Ft. Dodge Pneumabort vaccine as well (injection site swelling, stocking up and generally feeling icky) but does much better with the Prodigy vaccine by Intervet. I really like the intranasal Strangles vaccines, as the horses seem to have much milder vaccine after-affects with it than the injections. |

I do all my own vaccines. With 40+ horses how could I not. I also order them through the mail and have never had a problem. www.jeffersequine.com is where I get them. I have been doing this for a few years now and it is so much easier on the pocket book. I see my vet plenty that I do not need to "make" a reason to see him. Wish it were that way. LOL. My vet and I see each other so much that we have become friends now and it is sooo easy to get him to come over. I can call him any day of the week and ask questions. He is fabulous!!! |

I don't do my own vaccinations but just recently have started doing my horse's Adequan myself, its only slightly cheaper but makes it easier since my horse is on all day turnout and had to be left in on days vet was coming to give her shot. So far, so good! I was a little nervous at first, but after the first few months giving the shot is no big deal!
