Hopefully Show will be sold and I will be the proud owner of a to-turn-3 year old in May. Because River isn't mine (and still has to pass a few pre-reqs before the deal is sealed), I haven't spent a ton of time thinking about the future, but I do have general goals. 60-days in the spring. W/T/C by the end of the year and confidently going over poles and maybe small flower box type stuff.

The barn scuttlebutt is that I go too slow and take too many babysteps. I'd rather go slow than fry his brain or body. What the heck else should I be doing? I literally work with him once a week. I should be doing more than sitting on him and being led around? Whatever......heh. Guess you can tell how I feel about the scuttlebutt. :teehee:

Well, god willing Ms. Kirra will sell soon. She's being 1/2 leased starting tomorrow, by a kid, so that'll be great for her. But she's gotta sell soon, and I'm hoping doing a new video of her to show her progress will attract a buyer :luck:

Clyde hasn't been ridden in over a year. After throwing me off twice in 5min. last November, I was done (obviously, a lot had led up to that point). I'm considering starting him back in the Spring, but we'll see. He's living behind my BO's house right now, because #1, he does SO much better being out 24/7 (with access to a stall), and #2, I'm not going to pay full board on a horse I'm not riding.

My only issue with bringing him back into work is that the boarding barn (where Kirra is), is across the street, which would mean I'd have to walk him there whenever I wanted to work him. I know that sounds lazy, but when you have a spooky, high strung horse, everything can be a challenge.
I don't want to board him there again, because he just doesn't do well (mentally) in a high activity environment. He's so happy now and I'd hate to risk that. It's an awesome, awesome barn, but he's been there before, and I know how much better he is now that he's out 24/7, so I'd feel selfish if I just stuck him back there.

So I'm not sure what to do. Time will tell I guess.

Hey Snacky, I get the same flack at my boarding barn. That I am too anal, take too long, obsess too much. But actually as time has gone on, and people have watched my horses get healthy and come along, I see people becoming the same way, ha ha. So hey... Slow and steady wins the race.... you just keep at it, lady!!!

I am not even sure what my goals are. What I'd like to do?? The hack classes at a few local shows. But that has been my goal for a number of years. Somehow, it never happens-- horse gets sold, goes back to owner, ends up lame, etc.

Realistically, I'd like Win to be sound enough to do some light work under saddle. W/T, maybe some cantering if I get really lucky. Unrealistically, I'd like to show him W/T/C, in my pretty grey hunt coat, and live to tell the tale. (I won't even ask for a ribbon. ;) )

Little Miss Olivia has a date with the wonderful young horse trainer in March to be started under saddle, and I plan on just taking it slowly with her for the rest of the year. She might go to a few shows this fall, probably not to show but to just school and get out there and see the big world.

For Tarragon, I really want to be able to string all the parts of 3rd Level together into a respectable-enough test. My main horse show goal is to finish my Bronze medal this year- I need one more 2nd level score and 2 3rd level scores. Of course, the main stumbling block is that if I work enough to be able to pay for lessons and shows, I'm always working and don't have time to ride *sigh*

Thanks Flash. I appreciate that. I know I probably go too slow, but when the criticism comes from specific people, it bugs. At least I admit to being in a little over my head working with a baby. River is pretty damn sane, but he's still a 2 year old. Thankfully River's owner thinks I do just fine with him. :P

As to you...I hope your goals, even the big ones are attainable. You always amaze me with your perserverence in the face of some difficult crap. You deserve a stellar 2009. :cheer:

Edited to add that '09 is starting off great. Went on a walkabout with River...down the road by the short side of the arena three times (dismounted at the end each time because turning around put him right next to the stall runs and the he was enjoying tormenting the occupants of said runs. I really didn't want to be on him as the mare was biting his butt and the geldings were charging him). River handled the whole thing like a pro...even when the two dogs decided they needed to accompany us on our walk

I'm sort of at a cross-roads. I've got my coming 21-year old retiree, who is still a blast to flat. But his jumping/showing days are over. Then there's the horse I've been leasing and occassionally doing the A/A's on for the past year. I can keep doing that, BUT, after 5 years of serious health issues, I've been cleared to try to get pregnant! :woot: IF that that happens (I'm not a spring chicken anymore, so my odds aren't great) I'll drop the lease. I've seriously considered just stopping the lease now in order to save $$, but I'm afraid that karma will bite me in the ass and I surely won't get pregnant if I do that. So . . . who knows what's in store for me in 2009?
good luck, delia! :cheer:

Having the horses home is wonderful... but I don't ride  so, when the footing gets better, I have a plan to do lots of suppling ground work and long-lining with all three, including poor old Rusty. Have a place I can ride this winter, exercising school string. But they ain't my beautiful Boo and Dime....

What a waste. :mallet:

2009 will be different!!!

All things being equal, I will attempt to show in little jumpers/CT/dressage  . I will ride Boo regularly, with a plan, and stick to it  . If Dime allows, I will give him regular easy exercise  . And I will continue to work hard growing my business.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I actually have goals for 2009! :jaw:

Sammy will be 2 in April so my goal is to start long lining/ground driving him all over the place. Then perhaps get him backed in the fall..........perhaps. My butt could actually be in the saddle by the end of 2009. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

SnackPack, my filly will be three in May also. My plans for mine sound very similar to yours, although my girl is headed for the dressage ring, not the hunters.

I'm with you on the taking it slow idea- I've planned and saved for this baby for ages, and I've been so careful with everything from picking the stallion to agonizing over nutrition and every other aspect of her care. I'm not going to rush things now and ruin all the care I've put into her. I'm hoping Liv will be my Grand Prix horse, so she's got to be sound and sane for a long time.

Well, Rudy goes back on Tuesday to Morven Park for a second revision surgery on his trailer-accident-induced chest abscess. Hopefully we will be able to find the foreign body that is keeping it from healing. Fingers crossed and the creek don't rise, I'll be done with grad school coursework in March (although I still have to write my thesis) and he will go back in work. I'm hoping to drag him around to a few local shows this summer, maybe to show, maybe to just see the sights. Most of all, I just want him to be healthy.

My biggest goal for 2009 is to find a pony! I've never owned a horse before, so this will be a learning experience. I hope to find something that I can eventually do the adults on. I'd like to make it back into the show ring by years end, but that may depend on what I wind up buying.

Other than that, I just want to keep improving with my riding.

Lets see...I plan on giving my 9 TB mare the rest of the winter off. I love this mare to death 9 months out of the year, she is quiet, honest, and kind during the months where she goes out in the field...and then November/December comes around and I am riding a frickin' can of Red-Bull! I don't get it, but I guess she just doesn't like being couped up and cold. So I have decided to make life easier on the both of us to give her winters off and start her back every Spring instead. In the meantime I will play with my 18 month old Westporte gelding out of the above mare. He is the complete opposite of her in so many ways, but also carries her great traits as well. He is already the "steady eddy" type and he is truly to love of my life:) Once Image (my mare) starts back in March/April we will get ready for show season to do the 2'9" Amateur Hunter classes. She almost always takes the hack, and places consistently over fences...just need to polish the changes and we are good to go!

Goals:
Spend more on horse shows than vet bills/meds
Locate Side Saddle, do the appointments class and maybe hack if I am brave.
Move up to the AOs

Another one here with a coming 3 year old! :cheer:

My goals for 2009 (once we exorcise her winter wild child!) are:

Backing (hopefully February, early March)
Starting to just hang out at some shows this season, just to get a feel of the atmosphere.
Hit some line shows (once I learn how exactly to stand up the little darling the right way and some additional tricks of the trade!)
WTC undersaddle by end of summer
Qualify for Royal Winter Fair Cup classes. (This might be a bit "pie in the sky", but definately worth a shot!)

Maybe some lofty goals... but Sasha seems to really want to work and gets bored easily with the everday stuff.

Any tips on the line show stuff greatly appreciated!!
