Glad he is home!! How is he doing?

What are the attributing the abNs on his thx rads to? broncho-pneumonia? lung abscess? CHF? Is he having any changes in breathing rate, effort? Has he had a fever? Did they discuss doing either a thoracocentesis or transtracheal wash, to identify/define the euffision and/or the infiltrates in his lungs? Did they mention auscultating any crackles (inspiratory vs expiratory) or wheezes (inspiratory vs expiratory)?

That is a huge weight gain? Fluid is very heavy, 1L of fluid weighs 2.2#... But I guess if they that was all fluid, they won't have sent him home...that is amazing though...~3-4% of his total body weight...was he lean going in?

Many jingles that he is on the mend and he is being a good patient!!! :) Hugs to both of you!!!!

Respiration is normal, heart rate is normal, however a grade III of VI left systolic murmur was identified. Dr. Frederick did not mention any concern mostly because I believe it was very likely caused by his lean condition. They took radiographs of his chest, I paid to have the CD shipped to me so I can look at them myself. I had talked to Dr. Frederick about doing some taps but we both opted not to because everything else was inconclusive and he felt with radiographs done, if he gets worse they have a good starting point if he comes back. They can go straight to the chest cavity taps and look for pneumonia or tumors.
He had a fever once at home, but it was completely normal the next morning. I can scan you a copy of his discharge papers if you like!

There is no "normal" reason to have pleural effusion, there are a few reasons for it, decreased oncotic pressure (ie low blood protein), increased hydrostatic pressure (ie CHF), inflammatory process (ie infections, PE), and neoplasia.

Normal HR generally rules out CHF, and horses can develop murmurs when they are ill, lots of colic horse will have transient murmurs due to the change in viscosity of their blood and with fevers, anemia, etc...

If he is breathing comfortably and normally, they must feel that any further work up at this time, is unnecessary and are relating it to his sinus infection.

Big :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: :jingles: for the both of you and that he is getting stronger every day!!!

Well our flushes are almost done, hardly anything came out tonight so I believe everything is working. I will have to tape him again to see if he has gained any, but he is looking good and has his excuse for a winter coat going. I had a mare choke the night he came home so she has been across from him which has kept him very quiet. His one vice is he likes company. Now she has called to no end when the rest of the herd goes to the back of the pasture, but he stays quiet. Two more days of the flushes and I give a call back to Dr. Frederick to see where we go from there. So far so good! The jingles are working!

Still some snot clumps coming out in our flush today, however, one more day to go. He's an awesome sport. A woman who leased a new mare before I got her came by and gave me a BUNCH of grain, alfalfa pellets and oats for Christmas and while we were putting them in the feed room, Dan was making all sorts of faces over his stall door. She thought he was a trip.
I am eagerly awaiting his xrays to arrive because I want to see what Dr. Frederick was talking about and get some consultation on his teeth. Most likely if I get another 100lbs on him I'll see about taking him down again for another ultrasound and see how much of his ailments resolved themselves. Also to see about putting him on Seminole Wellness Senior since Seminole is pretty much the Florida horse's grain as it's made down here. It was hinted to me that the prices are going down this week. Have to admit, it looks d@mn good for a senior feed.

His Xrays came in! I have noooo idea what I am looking at on the thorax dorsal or ventral. He was bright eyed and bushy tailed when I turned him out today and he looks like he is getting better condition. Jingles and prayers are working their magic.
Going to put him and his broodies on the seminole senior, Dr. Frederick agreed with my logic.

CBC test tomorrow. Still gaining weight like he should and finally succumbed to going outside in the pasture with the rest of the ladies and the distasteful coastal hay. Still snoot nose but no more draining and spirits are high. As long as he gets his alfalfa!
