Well, I have seen Sir Caletto and watched him show with Hap, so he made me drool. I have seen Cunningham and he made me drool some - not as much as I did for SC I have seen Popeye K and he didn't make me drool. I never saw Corlando show, but I did see several offspring that made me drool. (I am now ducking for cover as it is sure death to make such a statement about Popeye K, but it is my 56th birthday and I can say whatever I want to say!!!! )I will say that Contendro makes me drool. I will say that Arko III makes me drool and so does Cumano. And there was a new young stallion in the Hanoverian inspections that made me drool, a Contendro-Salieri stallion. My drool factor is this: I look for the greatest jumping stallions to put to hunter mares - can't help it - my bias. I will now retire for the rest of the evening

I hope that you will send pictures of the foal to Patti. Pictures at about 3 months and then yearling, etc are great! We love seeing the foals. He truly is an amazing stallion and I know Patti goes to great lengths for her customers. |

2 Dogs this is just a FUN thread to talk about stallions that make you drool....everyone has different taste and opinions. Who cares that you don't like Popeye.....that was not the question or topic at hand. I think Sir Caletto is just o.k in my book but I won't bash him because you like him...I respect that we have different taste. Have some class and don't stir the pot. I didn't see 2Dogs stirring the pot??? I totally agree with her observation, though I have not seen Cunningham or Sir Caletto in person. I LOVE Sir Caletto and I think Cunningham might be a close second but I have a HUGE soft spot for big grey Holsteiners with fat necks and super jumps. Popoeye is definitely nice but I have seen way too many of his babies that are very much 'just ok' here in Ontario. PC, yours are definitely an exception, but I think you know that! For jumper stallions, i LOVE LOVE LOVE Nick Skelton's Russel. And of course I love Pacific Star, but I might be a tad bit bias.

You also have to remember that Popeye was bred to a wide variety of mares his first few years standing & many of those were of lesser quality. The "ok" babies you see in Ontario are probably the result of a less than stellar mare. Now that he's had better mares the past few years & not just bred to anything with a uterus, I think you can better judge how he's going to produce. PC's kids are fabulous. Genevieve @ Glenhill had 2 very nice PK babies this year also. I'm not throwing stones or stirring the pot here, but just trying to be fair. JMHO.

Every time I think I've found the oddest Popeye bred in Canada I seem to stumble across one more. So far I've found a percheron cross, a standardbred, a pony, an appaloosa, and a cleveland bay. All perfectly useful breeds on their own, but what exactly were they aiming for with that breeding??

JTM- Look, I just didn't want this fun thread to turn into what stallions I hate thread......that was not what this thread is about. It's nice to see what other peoples favorite stallions are and I was enjoying this thread. I am well aware 2 dogs doesn't like Popeye she has stated this several times before in the past on other threads...I am fine with her not liking him that is her opinion.....just thought it wasn't really necessary to say it again in a postive thread like this one. Not everyone is going to like the same stallion for whatever reason...Thank God we all have different taste. Popeye bred ALOT of mares in his first 2 years standing stud(I think over 200) and his old owners bred him to everything with a uterus. I have seen several Popeye offspring that made me want to run the other way and I have seen others that make me want to breed my mare to him all over again. I am a huge fan of Rio Grande but the same thing happened to him.....Rio was bred to just about every type a mare there is and he has tons of offspring here in Canada. I have seen some that are just o.k, some I would never want in my barn and some that are just lovely. When a stallion breeds to that many different types of mares you are going to get great, good, mediocre and just bad offspring. |

Just to clarify - I think there are few stallions here (in the US) that have proved themselves in the hunter ring, and Popeye K certainly has - and he is among a handful (far as I know!). I ADMIRE the stallions that have proved themselves in the hunter ring, this I will say unequivocally! Crown Affair is another stallion I have seen show, and he is a dream - a puppy dog who follows his Amateur Owner around like he is a little canine. He jumps GREAT. But will he be popular? Probably not, as he is a typical holsteiner, plain bay, not a speck of white, not a pretty little head...... I would pick any of these showing hunter stallions, hands down, over a horse that has: never shown over fences, has no show record, or, did not score well in the jumping portion of their inspections, if done, or, if new, does not have bloodlines that suggest they will/have a jump that is of the type I WANT in a hunter. I might alter that thought if I had a super jumping mare..... I drool over some of the jumper stallions like Arko III or Cumano, because, because! they jump so beautifully that with the right mare, I think they could make exquisite hunter babies. That Popeye never rocked my particular boat does not in any way imply that he hasn't been magnificent in his hunter divisions, and he does have bloodlines to die for! Just not MY type. |

I regularly drool over escapade. I have a gelding so anything I think is totally useless. I do wish I could see him show more, because I think he would clean up... Popeye is really great too, he just is a bit heavier type and Lego (the gelding) does not need to be enlarged anymore. We need to improve the neck and get a little less...opinionated. But again, completely useless. Edited by gracetw22, Nov 2 2008, 07:15 PM.
