A great horse passed on today. I had the privilege of boarding him at my home for the last 18 months; an elderly quarter horse (age unknown) but thought to be around 32 today. Just a true gentleman. His owner never found out anything about the first half of his life; she could trace him back to his late teens, but the rest of his story will always be a mystery. Someone put a lot of time into him; he was very well schooled, excellent manners, and some people who rode him suspected he had been a roping horse or even a real working horse once upon a time.

My kids practiced picking out his feet while he walked, and my 3 year old neice took her first "ride" on him last year. He was a grandfatherly herd leader, who happily shared his hay and groomed his friends. Perhaps one of the most patient and gentle animals I have ever known.

I am happy that I was able to give him a fine end to a long life. He had what we thought to be a stroke this summer, leaving him with permanent neurological impairment; a sort of disconnect between his brain and his hind end. Even still, he was as dignified as he could be, and with the cold weather coming soon we knew it was time to let him go with that dignity. So he spent his last few weeks eating up his "favorite" pasture, sleeping in the sun, getting treats and pats, and hanging with his friends. I'm sad to see him go.

Aww, thanks. I always loved that picture. Wealthia had a rough time for about a half an hour, galloping around and calling for him. ButI know she knew it was him under the blanket in the pasture. She settled down after a while and was willing to be consoled by me, which was nice (I remember how Coco called for Peekaboo all day after she was euthanized and he was inconsolable.) She's still not too happy but she's doing ok. The dippy halflinger raced around with her wondering "why are we running? why are you upset?" He didn't understand.

Sigh.

Now I just need to find another Coco for myself (but about 15-20 years younger!) He really was the perfect sort of horse.

Everytime I read this board I get all teary eyed. Good on you for giving him the good and noble ending to his life. He'll meet you on the other side and hope others have the fortune of finding your farm for the same tenderness you gave him.

Im so sorry TBF and Coco's owner. He sounds like a grand old man. What a beautiful, "Old Soul" expression he had; so noble, kind and all-knowing.
