Wednesday I lost one of my best friends...Squire has been with me since I was nine years old, he took me from the long stirrups to the childrens hunters, he was the best first horse I could have asked for, and without a doubt the best teacher I've ever had. He was always patient, honest and tried his best no matter what the circumstances. I continued to ride him throughout college, and dabbled in the jumpers. He certainly wasn't the fanciest guy, but always did his job to the best of his ability.

It was clear very early on he earned his life long home with us, as my brother said when he found out he has gone on to Rainbow Bridge, Squire was like a family member, he was always there when we were growing up, he got into our hearts unlike any horse I've ever had. My brother isn't terribly horsey so the fact that he felt like says more than you can imagine.

As he got older and the wear and tear from racing over 7 years with 100 starts, and carting me around all those years, he became our baby sitter for the young horses with the occasional trail ride from me, or he was perfect for company that came to visit and wanted a pony ride, most of the people had never been around horses.

Last October he became a little neurologic and after several rounds of Marquis with no improvement I had found a holistic treatment after two weeks on it we saw great improvement. We kept him on in throughout the past year we did have our ups and downs, but overall he had a great extra year of quality life for that I am grateful. He would have been 30 next year! He had deteriorated in the past two or three months, but still was alert, perky, and full of life, so I didn't think his time had come yet, but I knew it was getting close. Wednesday morning I found him out in the paddock unable to get up, so I had to make that dreaded final call to my vet. He hadn't been down long judging from the marks in the paddock and I'm so glad I found him quickly. His final moments were very peaceful with lots of baby carrots and even a few bites of spring like orchard grass (thank goodness for the rain this year), his body failed him, but his heart the size of Texas wasn't going to give up so easily. My mom and DH were with me as well, I was so glad that he was able to go peacefully. I was also very thankful that DH took care of the "undertaking" duties, I wasn't sure I would be able to handle that, and was so glad he was able to do that for me.

Thanks for letting me share a little of Squire's past 20 years, if anyone would like to see some pics of the boy here is his link http://www.neighland.com/Squire.html I need to scan some older pics and add them to the site.

Here are some pics from last summer!!

Oh Neighland! What a fabulous looking boy he was, a testament to your love and great care. I've been so mired in my own sorrow that I hadn't checked this thread, so I am sorry I missed it early on. You're in my thoughts and prayers!

God Speed, Squire! You will be missed.

I never come here because it makes me too sad, but I wanted to come post for you Lynlee. Squire was a lucky, lucky horse to have you and he was a grand, regal man to the very end.

He was stunning!
You have my deepest condolences. He was very loved and I'm sure he loved you just as much in return. It's always hard losing a family member, even the equine kind.
