I am really hard to fit (actually it has never been done) in off the shelf boots. I have had a pair of customs for the past 19 years and they are ready to die. I don't have the money to spend on full custom boots and wanted to investigate the semi-custom options available. Any advice? Any places to avoid? Thanks, Christina |

I have semi custom Sergio Grassos and like them a lot. They are holding up very well and are five years old. They took about ten wears to break them in-very tight at first. Due to them having zippers, I could, however, leave them partially unzipped and then gradually do them up. I also used to have to put them on first thing in the am. Now, though, they're very comfy and fit the same way regardless of the time of day. |

Renn got a pair of semi-customs from Beval, I don't know all the details though. She'll probably check in on this topic at some point. |

WHy is it that off the shelf boots don't work for you, if you don't mind me asking? This used to be true for me too, but with all the modern high end boots these days, I can get off the shelf boots that I like better than customs. I sold my Vogels on ebay and haven't looked back! Perhaps if we know your fit issues we can provide better help. |

I have Sergio Grasso semi customs as well. They are just great and worth the money. But you might be surprised at what you can find off the rack these days. Sergio Grasso has about a thousand combinations! |

Well, I have large calves, and I am not that tall. But my calves aren't tree trunks and if the boot fits my calf they are huge right below my knee at the top of the boot. I also have a really high instep so trying to get my foot in a pair directly above the ankle where the lacing starts is almost impossible since that is the smallest area of the boot. The local custom boot people can make me customs at around $900 (and they are beautiful) so I would want to spend less than that. Also it seems that where I am there is a dearth of tack shops that have a wide variety of quality off the shelf boots. I am tempted to go over to Dover near Baltimore but I am unsure of their selection. |

You sound like me - short larger legs. Even most semi customs are going to cost you $900 at least if you want good quality and good looks. The price of boots have really gone up the past year or two apparently. I paid $750 for my semi custom Sergio Grassos but they have gone up to close to $900 now. If you find some that fit but gape too much at the knee you are probably better off just having a good boot person taking them in at the top. Maybe go with zippers to solve the instep issue. Ariats are good boots for the money and it shouldn't cost much just to have them taken in at the top. |

I too have large calves and I have effinghams (yeah they don't make them anymore) that I got semi-custom when i was 16 or so and I think that they were 600 bucks. I was measured at gayer's in laurel- which is also non-existent. I still wear them on rainy days and the soles are just now wearing thin on. I have abused them- badly- and am pretty surprised that they aren't completely falling apart. That being said- they have never been tall enough- which is a huge pet peeve of mine- not tall enough boots are not attractive on anyone. I now have Vogel's- which I do not like- I sent them back three times to get them fixed and they have never been right. Word to the wise- DO NOT HAVE MR. VOGEL MEASURE YOU- EVER. This is apparently a widely known fact but I was the last to know. I have heard great things about the beval semi-customs but they do not last long. If you do a lot of showing I would expect to go through them in two years or so. When I save all my pennies (and actually start to show again) I think that I am going to invest in some parlantti's (sp??) a couple people in my barn have them and I think that they are really really gorgeous- but expensive. It sounds like Beval might be your best bet, just make sure that you have someone TOP notch to measure you- it might even be worth it to take a trip to the beval store and do it there so that there is no confusion- there is nothing worse than having boots arrive that don't fit. GOOD LUCK! ![]() *edited for typos- and wow this was a long post, sorry!* Edited by kmcneil, Oct 2 2008, 02:57 PM.

I am really worried about the measuring part....that is why I would love to go and try boots on instead of ordering them. Does anyone know of a place in MD,VA, DE or PA that has a large quantity of off the shelf boots? |

YOu can call the Dover store on Route 50 (on the way to Middleburg) and ask them what type of selection they have. That store gets a lot of traffic, so I'm guessing that their selection should be pretty good. |

Don't bother with the Hunt Valley Dover. I know several of the women who work there, and if I could guarantee for you that one of them would be there when you went in to try, I might say go for it. But some of the people that work there are worthless when it comes to fitting anything. I will now proceed to tell you how I really feel, eh? ![]() You might give Maryland Saddlery a shot, though. I think they deal with Vogel and Der Dau as well as various stock boot options, and Hope's measurements are every bit as good as anyone else's (and better than Mr. Vogel's!) I recently bought a pair of Beval Puissances which I absolutely love. My legs are 21" from back of knee to floor, with a 16.5" calf. You see my trouble. If they're tall enough, they're not wide enough. If they're wide enough, they're too short. If they look like they are going to fit, they will probably drop two inches. The Bevals fit beautifully. I was originally dead set against a zipper, but I do like the contoured, fitted ankle that a zipper allows (and with high arches you will probably appreciate them too.) Lots of sizing options. You can measure yourself and if you fall between sizes, Beval is very helpful in determining which size will work for you. On COTH some people have said they don't hold up well; I bought mine on recommendation from a friend who had them for eight years, wore them daily riding four to six horses, and showed in them. Your mileage may vary. Edited by Renn/aissance, Oct 6 2008, 08:06 AM.

Good luck finding some! I am finally giving up on my sergios working out and just paid an obscene amount of money for some full custom parlantis. I'm going ot spend the 4 months stressing that the boots will come in and not fit, or worse yet, be UGLY. Can you imagine? My issue is not so much that my calves are oddly sized, it is the shape. The widest part is relatively low, so boots get kind of pulled down, causing excess dropping and a zipper which juts right into the achilles. Of course, getting boots to fit in the bottom of the calf also means they are too big at the top... Generally sizing issues can be accomodated, though. |

I am with Renn on the Bevals. I have had mine for several years and I think they hold up fine. They have many many sizing options, and I have almost the exact same measurements as Renn -- lucky us, eh? They were the only non-customs that had the height and the width. Actually, I think they may make the tallest boots in semi custom sizing, IIRC. |
