So I rode my new horse, Sam, in our first show last weekend. I did the Adult Eq on the Flat so I could get over my jitters before going over fences. During the first canter, Sam did a big swap and then broke into a trot. I quickly nudged him back into a canter and started smiling, figuring we were seriously out of the ribbons. We reversed and during the next canter, he broke into the trot AGAIN! By then I was really smiling, mostly because I was absolutely thrilled to have a lazy horse instead of one who's really nervous (Miller). I placed third. THIRD! I certainly did not deserve third. I wanted to give the ribbon back. My trainers said I should take it while I could and to remember that next time I saw someone win who also made a mistake. Sam was terrific the rest of the show. We trotted in EVERY over fences class. LOL! That just cracks me up! Sam has a natural 14' stride (I swear!) and I showed in the 2'6". To make the short lines, we had to crawl, so it was easier for him to trot around the corners. In my last trip, we trotted into a four stride and cantered out in three. And he wasn't even going fast. He's just really loooooooonnnnnngggg. :-) So, did you ever get a ribbon you didn't deserve? |

I think your trainer is very wise. At the end of the day, the ribbons aren't that important - in either direction, winning them or not! At least, that's my opinion.

Yes, we've definitely learned about robbing, and getting robbed. We've had both happen. My daughter was 3rd in a fairly big s/s hack class the other weekend, after getting run into, so she cut across the ring (not pretty), broke, picked up the wrong lead for 3 strides and then fixed it. RIGHT in front of the judge. I was little embarrassed. But this past weekend at a bigger show, she placed behind several that shouldn't have gotten a ribbon at all. One pony ran away with the kid for 3/4 lap, nose on chest, while everyone else was walking. We have it on video. Several were on wrong leads. My pony was perfect, just got outmoved and didn't carry himself like the winning ponies. My pony shouldn't have won but should have been at least 3 places higher. But then the winning pony in another class actually kicked at another kid and broke twice but then I have a problem with a red ribbon wearing pony winning pleasure anyway so I'm biased. The judge can't see everything (although we're fairly sure she saw this because she was staring at the pony when it happened )Just the way it goes, don't worry about it. Belladonna, Im glad Im not the only one who thought it a little odd that a pony with a red ribbon 1) had a teeny tiny kid on it that couldnt steer and 2) won a pleasure class. Your pony should have won it, she was the cutest one in there Its really all in what the judge see's. I felt bad all the beginning of this year showing my very green mare in the little division because she way out classed the other horses in there. I just started showing unjudged because the mare just needed to get under saddle time. |

There is a zen ribbon karma to the universe. For everytime you get robbed, you will get one you don't deserve. It all works out in the end. Congrats on Sam, he sounds super! |

Oh, absolutely. The most outstanding example of this was when I was riding a pre-green horse who was a witchy little mare (her name was Hazel, and we used to call her W(B)itch Hazel when the owners weren't around). She was in season, bucking and rooting over the jumps, and I even pulled her up in a corner and backed her up. We WON the class. I was embarrassed, and because I was friends with the judge, I actually said, "Bob, what were you thinking?? We were awful!" when I saw him later. He said, "Oh, I didn't think it was that bad." Of course, I've been robbed plenty, too, so now I just smile and nod... |

Well, and sometimes the other people had mistakes that YOU didn't see....so maybe 5 horses broke, or picked up wrong leads, or bucked or did something that made your mistake "relative". But yes, the ribbonage issues tend to work themselves out in the end. |

I did a "chair in the air" "Hail a cab" "Hunt Print" in an IHSA class when i was a freshman (IHSA=equitation) and I won- JT just told me "Christmas came early for you this year." haha It happens often..... judges are human and can't always be perfect. |

Snaffle, two new judges made my I hope I never show under them again list from that show. The judging this past weekend, if you want to call it that, was terrible... If you watched the adult medal final you would understand because one adult 3 hoofed the first jump and they gave her a 75. They can't say they didn't see it because they both watched her miss the first jump. I think you should enjoy the ribbon because at the next show the ribbon karma could be jinxed!

My trip in the Adult Medal at my last show was fairly dreadful -- (1) horse broke to a trot while pooping during my courtesy circle; (2) after every line he dashed to the corner before doing a VERY exuberant lead change; and (3) he ran off with me after the last jump, so at that point I decided to train on his ass by breaking him off the bit hard, circling and even doing a simple change and circling in the other direction. There were 15 in the class and I went early, so Ms. Trainer and I agreed that I should go back to the barn and untack b/c there was no way in hell I would get called back for the flat phase. I had just finished bathing my horse when I heard the announcer call me back 3rd (in order of preference) for flat work. All I can think is that the judge must have been writing alot on his card, and didn't see my poop trot at the beginning or my little schooling session at the end . . .

With the hunters I keep telling people - if your horse goes well and you are happy with the trip or the hack that is all that counts, then you get cake, if you also happen to get a ribbon then you get icing. Sometimes you only get cake. There are times that you don't get cake and get a handful of icing. My Baby Green horse hit a rail in a class, it bounced out of the cups and back in but you could have heard it all the way to Tacoma it was so loud! He was 8th out of 18! I wouldn't have given him anything for that one. Another time this summer he had won the hack in one division and in the other division he should have won that too, he was 8th out of 16 or something, a horse that forged was pinned over him! He pretty much wins the hack around here no matter how big the class, but oh well. |

Been on both sides. You just have to figure that the ones you are given will equal out with the ones that are taken. My best show ever on Show had VERY fair judging and it makes me sad to this day. The ribbon gods weren't smiling on me, for sure. It was a five class division (2 hunter o/f, one eq over, one HUS and one eq flat). We won the two o/f (first time getting blue in o/f) and got a fourth on the eq over. We got 2nd or third in the HUS. I'm doing the eq flat and on the last trot, I cut to close to a jump and the wind blows the tree on the other side of the standard. Show spooks and breaks to the canter for ONE stride. I'm WAY in the corner, so I figure I just might get a way with it. I look at the judge, he's looking RIGHT at me. I smile, he smiles and that was that. The worst part was that the announced me in first place...and then did a whole 'wait, wait. That's wrong.' I got dropped to 6th out of 10 or so, which dropped me out of Champion contention. I even missed reserved by 1 point. It would've been Show's first Champion. I really shouldn't have gotten the 6th, but oh well. I broke my arm the next week and was off the horse for 8 months and out of the show ring for a year. :DI saw that judge after the show and he was like 'you soooo had that.' and we laughed. It was one of those moments where we both knew what he had to do, but neither of us was happy about it. ![]() Snaffle, when do we get to see some more pictures of Sam? |

Been there too. I laid down an awesome 1st round trip in a medal qualifier & was called back on top. Judge has an easy test. I fell off. At the halt. Saw the judge later & we just laughed. I said the looks on their faces staring at me in shocked disbelief was almost worth it.

Snacky, I had the same thing happen to me last year! I was riding Miller in his flat class (which he often won) and they announced something like 'Number 441'. I was 414. The poor girl who's number 441 starts to walk forward, all excited, and the announcer goes 'Oh, sorry, that was 414.' So, because I've heard mistakes before, when they announced my third in the Eq, I just sat in the line thinking 'that MUST' be a mistake!' I'll try to get some pics of Sam this weekend. I didn't buy any at the horse show. He's all legs and jumping 2'6", his legs are all splayed funny over the jumps. Even in the pre-greens with my trainer her doesn't look like he's making an effort. Glad I didn't sign up for the video service just to pay billions of dollars to watch myself trotting around the ring! Smiles and Giddy-Up, when am I ever going to meet you guys????? |
