:cheer: I just got my USEF membership renewal and it says:...In addition, the membership process has been further streamlined doing away with the breed/discipline dues. The new USEF Competing Equestrian Membership fee for all Senior Active and Junior Active members is $55. You will be able to participate at all USEF Licensed Competitions, receive equestrian magazine at no additional charge...

So what's the catch?

that was short-lived...the USHJA $55 fee required for hunter shows was conveniently not mentioned in the renewal email. Oh well.

I was wondering what the catch was too - now I know! I haven't renewed yet (as always, I'll wait until I am trying to leave for my first 2009 show, my internet won't be working, and I'll be at a friend's house at 100am trying to print a damned card!). Alas, everything is getting more and more expensive. Between fuel costs, rising show costs, and board increases from hay and grain prices going up, I don't know how much longer I can play in the pond I'm in...

In 1990 my birthday present was a life membership to the then AHSA. It was going up to $1K and if I paid before November 30 - I got to pay the old rate plus they deducted my 1990 membership from the amount since I was upgrading. So for $700 I was now a life member. No more fees. However, I stopped showing in 1994, we moved to Washington. The horse passed away in 2003 at 22 - I was never going to own another horse.

In 2001 - I start getting this USHJA mail. I blew it off. Not showing, no horse, no reason to be a member of anything. They finally gave up asking old AHSA now USEF Life members to pony up another $1K for Life Membership and we were grandfathered in. As we should have been, the AHSA had been the only national association for 100 years for the hunters and jumpers and now they were making a NEW one? Well if you already HAD paid them the $1K you could leave it with them as a donation.

I got a new horse in 2006 - oy. He is life recorded because he was 2 when I bought him and it was discounted. Now I don't have to pay the $30 for the USHJA horse registration either. Sometimes life is good. Now I only have to pay annually for the local association. That is $75 a year for the horse and my membership.

The fee did go up for juniors. They were $35 to register. So now the fed will be getting more cash from that since there are so many junior riders. We still pay the same fee and they offer that $5 or $10 off if you register before dec 1.

So, I'm trying to figure this out and maybe y'all can clarify. I'm a life member (same story as Seal Harbor) but I haven't yet registered Rudy, as he's at least a year from doing anything but plopping around local schooling shows while I'm still in grad school. Also, the last horse that I life-registered died before ever making it to a rated show, so I'm somewhat superstitious.

I don't ever anticipate doing more than a handful of rated shows per year with the Rude Dog, nor will we be point chasing. So, do I just do the USHJA fee and not the USEF fee? I'm not required to do both unless I want HOTY or Indoors points, right?

Color me confused.

You don't have to record your horse unless you want to be considered for Zone or National HOTY awards. You only need to pay the $30 to the USHJA to register your horse. That number will be his USEF recording number once you decide to go for the Zone or National HOTY awards. At least that is my understanding.
