and all I can say is I guess they're trying to put the cache back in the horse show by thinning out the number of entries--20 per section which resulted in outrageously high cut offs for modern times. I don't think I'm ever going to campaign enough or win enough to get the 5 million points to get in so WIHS won't be getting anymore of my money. Did anyone see a press release right after last year's cut offs that they were thinning out the divisions for this year? I had no idea until i saw the prize list this year which is a bit too late to go collect an extra thousand points :teehee:

You didn't see a press release because it wasn't a planned deal. Unfortunately when you have to close down the streets of DC, abide by fire lane rules and regulations and the DC government, you lose stall space. We lost a significant amount of stalls last year- and some this year, as well. We're trying to make do with what we have, while still putting on a decent event.

Well I've made my position known about the Verizon Center. If it can't accomodate the horse show on normal terms that are consistent with the other qualifying shows/indoors and in a manner that's humane to the horses, I don't see why it keeps staying there.

ETA: TT I know you are working hard and I don't mean to undermine it in anyway...it's just sad to see another great indoor show increasingly struggle. I've worked with trainers who won't even enter because it's hard on the horses and now you'll have people who want to go but won't even enter because they're taking so few. I see several horses across different divisions who really belong there and aren't in.

I'm pretty sure that no matter how I defend the show or explain why we stay, it will fall on deaf ears. Everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion and we're always happy to hear suggestions, as long as they are constructive.

If we left the Verizon Center (which has been looked into, believe me) the prestigiousness would definitely be lost. The National went from Madison Square to Florida, and it's not a huge "to-do" like it used to be. We're doing our best to keep the show at the "indoor" level and it's FAR from easy. Not everyone can be happy, and we all understand that. You'll have that at each show- not just WIHS.

Ericka, You do a wonderful job and I can't even begin to imagine what a headache working on that show is for you. Though I'm sure it's very rewarding for you when that first horse walks through the gates on Tuesday morning! I look forward to sitting in the stands on professional days...always a good time!

I just want you to know that I love that you put up the standby list. It saves us from calling and from you having to field all the phone calls.

THanks J Loh and JM....

It's actually the most rewarding standing there on Sunday night watching the tractors put the footing in the ring and seeing how much effort it takes to transform the whole arena. 2nd most rewarding is watching the first horse go in...which I'm always there to watch- with a HUGE sigh (THANK GOODNESS IT'S FINALLY HERE!)

and then the drive home on Sunday! ALL DONE!

Back in the day, I believe they took even less than 20 in some if not all divisions when the National was at the Garden.

Indeed -- Back in the dark ages when I was a junior, Harrisburg took the most and New York took the least, with Washington in the middle. At Washington they took around twenty-five small juniors and twenty-five large juniors (no age splits back then), and at New York they took around 20 juniors PERIOD. No split between smalls and larges. They did have a split between older and younger A/Os at both, but the numbers accepted were low.

I think that the lower numbers makes the horse show that much more prestigious. The best part about how all of the indoor shows qualify (qualifies? I am having a major quandary over the appropriate use here- singular, plural? anyways...) is (or are... oh goodness) that they take the TOP fifteen shows of the year- not the overall amount of points. Which does not reward showing at every horse show EVERY weekend- and jumping the legs off of your horse! They truly take the best in the country!

Just remember the muddled mint and strawberries kmcneil.

I think we should have a "Swan Lake Hunter Derby Part II" get together with Tortoise T...maybe during the Adult Hunter Classic on Tuesday night. I'd love to shout out to Teddy Time, "Faster Faster! Leave one out!!!" LOL!

oh that sounds like an excellent idea! I will make extra strawberry sauce this time- TT make sure we can "sneak" in our handle of bacardi- and a suite sure would make things more comfortable! I shall contact ML's significant other- I believe that his firm has a box at the VW!

I concur. That was a fun time. I mean- drinking at work is always a good idea, no? We can scream obscenities during the Children's Hunter Finals, too.
