I just got a gorgeous Tailored Sportsman jacket on ebay and ending up it's huge on me. It's big all over, the sleeves are baggy, it's long, the waist is way too big. I'm so frustrated because I absolutely love it, and got a great deal on it. Has anyone had a jacket altered and had good or bad experience? Is being huge all over just too much to be altered? I don't even know where to find someone I would trust to alter it. It's brand new with tags, should I just resell it and have to find another coat that I prob. won't like as much? I haven't shown in about 15 years and really am clueless on this and keep my horses at home so have no horsey peeps to ask for advice. |

The TS coats come with two sizes on the tags. You can end up with the right size or wrong size, depending on what the seller lists it as. I'm speaking from personal experience, unfortunately. I already have a TS I love but can be slightly too small when I'm a little heavier than normal. I see one on ebay just a size up, at an awesome price and buy it. It gets here and is HUGE. I'm still need to sell it...two years later. I would think if the coat is just too big everywhere you would be better off selling it and getting a smaller one. |

it says 6/12 on the tag, and when I went to a store and tried on a 4 it was nice- maybe even a little snug in the chest, so I thought the 6 should be great, maybe a tiny bit big, but not THIS big. The only size charts I could find only had the chest measurement listed and a 6 is correct for me by the chart, but it's just big and loose everywhere else. I really wanted a nice fitted look, not a frumpy look. The kids size jackets would probably fit me because I'm tiny, but they are super tight in the chest and I have a hard time buttoning the top if I can get it close. grrr. I hate that the sleeves are so baggy and even the shoulders seem wide. The jacket is really only about an inch or two too big in the waist and maybe an inch or two too long, but the sleeves are so loose. I love this coat. It's dark brown with a light blue windowpane. |

Hrmmm...it's just my size. Well, I'm glad you didn't experience my problem. I have a 6/12 and bought what I thought was an 8/14. Turns out it's a 14/20 and unwearable by me. I've heard a lot of people don't like the boxy shape of the TS coats. I LURVE mine...more than I should. |

hmmm, so maybe I need to look at a different brand then? I LOVE the color. See what I get for trying to get a deal. I think if I could get the arms taken in I wouldn't hate it so much, but I have no clue if that's doable. I'm glad it isn't completely the wrong size, but it's frustrating that it's so close, but no cigar. There is no way I could get away with wearing it the way it is. I was really hoping it would be the same size as the 4 everywhere else, but just bigger in the chest since that's the only measurement given on the size chart. Now thinking about it, that was pretty dumb of me to assume. Too bad the store I went to didn't have a 6 to try on or I would have known better. I just can not pay full price for a coat. I don't even know if I'll be showing any time soon, I just want to be prepared in case I find a show around and one of my horses seems to be ready to try a show. I thought the color would look fabulous with my yearling haflinger's light blonde color, but she won't be ready to show for quite a while. hehe- I was REALLY thinking ahead on this one. |

It's pretty easy to shorten sleeve length. Taking in the width of the sleeves isn't too, too bad either. Making the bust/waist smaller is doable but a bit of a chore. Lengthening/shortening the overall jacket is a pretty big pain. Narrowing/lengthenin the shoulders is a PITA too. BUT a good tailor can do all this and more, it'll just cost you for the more expensive alterations. Why not at least go to a tailor and ask? It can't hurt. If you really love the coat, might be worth it (trying to talk myself into doing the same thing right now with a coat I have that is too short-- but better to big than too small, when it comes to tailoring). |

oh thank you, that makes me feel a little better to know that it may be doable and there is a shot that I could make it work. Now I have to find someone to take it to. Anyone know anyone in Louisville or Lexington? |

re: altering. It CAN be done, just be extremely careful and look for a very good tailor and ask them point blank that they are capable of getting the job done. My mom had a beautiful dress that was a few sizes too big for her that she wanted to wear to wedding she and I recently attended. She asked for suggestions of a good seamstress/tailor in her town, found one, took it in, the girl said she could do it. A week before the wedding, Mom picked up the dress, tried it, and realized the girl TRASHED it. Thankfully, she got not only the cost of the alteration back, but also money for the dress, but she ended up having to trash a favorite. Moral of the story. Altering something that is quite big can be quite hard. Hopefully it will be easier with a coat with solid material. Make sure who ever does it leaves enough extra in the seams and hems to fix any errors. |

I think a good men's tailor will be what you need. I had a hunt frock coat beautifully altered by a tailor. |

I have to get almost everything I buy altered to some degree, because I'm an extreme hourglass and very short-waisted. But a good tailor is very expensive, so figure that in to the cost of the coat before you decide. It might be less costly to sell this one and keep looking for a coat that fits a bit better. |

Think carefully about whether the shape of the coat suits you. Most areas can be altered by a good tailor, but the basic SHAPE of the coat will be the same... so if the boxy cut isn't right for you, you may be disappointed even if the tailor does a "good" job. GP coats run more tailored in fit compared to TS, and the Marigolds do, too. In fact, I would say of the three brands, Marigold is probably the *most* fitted. You may want to try a few different brands and see what is most flattering and comfortable. If the coat is really too large all over as you describe, personally I think you'd be better off selling this one and finding something that either fits correctly off the rack, or requires only minor alterations. |

I had the hardest time selling the TS jackets in my store until a sales rep. (Katie) told me to order the slim cut. It is MUCH more tailored and fits like a normal coat. I can't get the reg. cuts to fit anyone. They are baggy in the sleeves and boxy in the waist on most people, even if they otherwise fit. I would take it to see what it would cost. Get a written estimate - what could it hurt? |

I've had my Grand Prix coat altered with great results. Where are you located, there's a great lady in Camden, SC who does coats for several riders. |
