Yes, I meant to rhyme. I am currently at a show and have been here since Thursday night. It is Yak's first show as a gelding. He was gelded on 5/9 and two weeks ago I had front shoes put on, but he was still a little sore behind so we didn't go there. He has great feet and goes barefoot in the winter until we go to FL. Anyway, I rode him to a third in the Low Hunters this morning. He was a little fussy on the turns because it rained and was REALLY slippery, but he was very good otherwise. Then I had a young adult show him in the afternoon. The AAs went after the Juniors, and they reset/lowered the jumps and dragged before the adults went. Just as they finished the drag, it started raining again, so I sent my kid right in first. Mind you, she had only jumped him maybe 4 or 5 times at home, and never a full course. Yak had never done a complete course at a show with anyone but me. They were VERY respectable!!!! He did jump her loose a few times, especially on the "in" to a 2 stride, and she got down the lines a little soon (she has never ridden a horse with a stride as long as his). They came out and the advice was to tone it down and let him jump up to her (sink deep) so he didn't get her out of the tack, and SLOW down MORE!!! So she went back in for her second round. The first jump was a long run to a single and she saw the REALLY big one, he saw the quiet one. He waited and patted the ground like a good packer! I was most pleased that he wasn't at all offended. The rest of the round was quite lovely except he jumped her really loose at the 2 stride again. The next horse went, and when she came out there was some discussion, and someone went out and lowered the "in" to the 2 stride!!! The ring was on a slope and from the ingate, the "in" was not that visible, but later, my kid told me she was peeing herself on the way to that jump. We were asked if we wanted to go again, but it was raining harder, and he has a nasty case of scratches right now added to the slippage due to no hind shoes, so we declined. Ya know, I really didn't think he was overjumping that "in" that much - it was just 6" too high and the kid (young AA) had never jumped him that high!!! Tomorrow is another day, but I am even more confident in my decision to geld. PS - the Ariadus youngster ended up champion in the Green (2nd year) Workings - first time showing 3'9", and Yak's sister got two seconds and won the hack in the older AA's today. |
