Oh dear Tom in heaven, yesterday was a nightmare! After waiting for 5+ hours for the two divisions of Older A/A's to go, and seeing as how I was second to last in the order for the Middles, I became increasingly nervous that the weather was going to turn bad before I got into the ring. And of course, as I started warming up in the schooling area, the sky turned purple. Then the lighting came and we were ordered back to the tents. And then all hell broke loose with the lightning, and the thunder, and the wind, and the torrential rain. And the horses in our tent were all screaming and running around in their stalls, as our tent sounded like it was going to lift off the ground. And then the power went out. Oh my. When it finally blew over, we knew that the footing was going to be bad -- it already was bad before the storm -- but we couldn't tell if it was going to be unsafe. So Ms. Trainer and I decided that I would go into the ring, but I'd pull up if it was too slick or if Project Pony was too nervous about it. The footing was indeed dreadful, but he was a dream and bravely picked his way around the slick corners and jumped out of the deep, deep slop. We actually had a great first trip, although he slipped on take-off to the second to last jump, so he hung up in the air a bit. After that slip we decided not to tempt fate a second time, so I scratched the second class. But we must have gotten bonus points for degree of difficulty, so we ended up fifth in our one class. After all that, I've never been so thrilled with a pink ribbon! Oh, and then as I drove home, it started all over again, with the tornado warnings, and the wind and the rain. I returned home to find that a big, old oak had come down across the street from my house, taking the power lines with it. We've been told we probably won't have power again until Saturday. I imagine that the show grounds were hit hard again as well. Good luck to those of you who are slogging it out today. It's supposed to be ungodly hot for the rest of the week, so at least the ground should dry out . . .Edited by Delia, Jun 5 2008, 08:06 AM.

Oh Delia, how brave of you and the PP! I was at the show during the excitement, hiding in the grandstand where it didn't seem too bad. But then I drove home and realized how much destruction there was with trees down everywhere, and drove right into a tornado warning and black black skies. EEK. |

Delia, I was also in the schooling ring getting warmed up when things started going down hill fast. I literally rode as fast as I could back to the other end where our stalls were. I had to do a flying dismount right when I got to our tent b/c the wind hit and the horses went beserk all around. It was scarey. Glad you made it safely around that course. It was dreadful out there. We scratched. I was worried about getting out in that mud too! My truck and trailer are brown from top to bottom. What a shame. |

For me it was a tough decision whether or not to scratch the whole thing. I had moved heaven and earth to take a day off from work for Upperville, so I really wanted to get into the ring. But of course I didn't want to be stupid and hurt my horse (who isn't even mine) or myself. I was lucky that my first trip turned out OK, and I wasn't willing to take another chance after that. Glad that you got out OK. I walked my horse over to stay at my friend's farm, which is adjacent to the show grounds. Hopefully I'll be able to get my trailer out on Saturday when I go back to pick him up! |

Ugh- Red Fox lost my reservation and my family decided they wanted to come up yesterday. So now I am looking for THREE hotel rooms. Yeah, this is not fun. Any suggestions? |

I just got home and god lord Delia it took some guts girl to show yesterday. Today they moved the locals into hunter 2 schooling ring and wanted us to school in ring 2. RBK took one look and said go to hunter 1 schooling to school. I walked across hunter 2 and almost didn't make it. At one point my horse stopped and just stood there...I'm pretty sure she was thinking "You have got to be kidding?!" So a big kuddos to you and congrats on a great ribbon! At the risk of jinxing myself...Miss O made her "after surgery return" to the ring today in the locals. She was perfect. I was a bit worried since it's been a while but I managed to pull it together to be 3rd in the first class. I needed a naviagation system in the second as I forgot where I was going after fence 1 and literally had to drag her left at the last second but managed to squeek out a brown ribbon. She was very happy to be back doing it and even sported a mud knot. So cross your fingers that we can continue to show and we have no more accidents or tummy aches. I'm off to wash the car as it is a lovely shade of brown. |

JM -- How exciting! So glad that you and O had a good day. Sorry we didn't get to meet up. I looked for you earlier in the day up at the grandstand (or for my image of what I thought you might look like!). But for all I know, I walked right past you! |

Thanks everyone. Very happy to have her back. mizzwade you should have come over and said hi! and yes the lines did come up super quick. I was a bit surprised in the first class how fast the first line came up. Delia I was late getting there and did the sliding in, in a cloud of dust in time to watch one trip of the Reg Conf and then it rained....

I was planning on heading down to Upperville tomorrow with the SO to spectate. It'll be his first horse show aside from the Grand Prix at WIHS, so I want to make it a positive experience. How truly crappy is it out there right now, from a spectators point of view? Is it really sloppy and muddy? I'm not excited about the prospect of schlepping around in ankle deep mud to watch the hunters go twice around to the left...but I also really don't want to miss Upperville two years in a row (had to miss last year because the dog had surgery)... Is it going to be worth it for us to go? |

If it doesn't rain any more you should be fine. Parking will be muddy and gross but remember it is a good experience for the first timers. The setting is lovely, the horses are the best, the shopping is incredible, and the food is good. Its more muddy for spectators on the jumper side but wear the right shoes and have fun! |
