Jersey Fresh - why do you have to account for the money your Dad gives you for plane tickets? A parent is allowed to gift a certain amount to their children with no tax penalties. IIRC (and I'm not an accountant) that amount is something like $11,000. You may want to look into that and have him do it personally rather than through his company.

No clue why he does it that way. But I don't argue since they've helped me through school and I figure if I don't get a $400 refund because of the way he does it, thats way less than all of the money they have put into plane tickets and school related stuff when I can't afford fees or books etc. I just get ticked when I owe because I know there are plenty others out there in the same salary range that are getting screwed.

I'm almost embarrassed to say I did this! I actually took the H&R Block course a loooong time ago and they begged me to work PT for them during tax season. Talk about stress!!!!! This was just before people did anything taxwise on computers. It was all manual! With a calculator! And you sat on one side of the desk with the client on the other side answering questions (and asking questions, which was even worse). I was an expert at income averaging. My supervisor checked every return I did (thank TOM). I survived, but NEVER AGAIN!

Now, with all the farm stuff, we have a CPA do it all. We meet with him, and he knows exactly where to put each and every number I feed him. What a relief it is! I don't regret one dollar we pay him because he's good, he knows what he's doing, and he's worth it.

We have a CPA also that does our taxes. We don't include the horse in it. But I was doing some part time independent contractor work last year and the CPA helped a lot from that standpoint with taxes and deductions. We are getting a refund, but we sold a house and bought a house last year, so I guess that helped. Now, to convince the hubby that a nice chunk of that refund should be earmarked for horse show expenses.

I guess there really is something terribly wrong with me. Back when I had a career and a life, I never minded paying taxes. The more I payed, the more I was making to begin with.

These days I can't tell you how much I wish I had a job and income. The fear that nobody will ever hire me again wakes me up many early, early mornings. :( I seriously worry what will become of me and my critters. I'm embarrassed to admit I got the earned income credit this year.

I never in my wildest dreams imagined that, after a successful 20 year career, I'd be out of work and rejected hundreds of times for 4 1/2 out of the last 6 years. There's a multinational veterinary diagnostics corporation just over an hour from me. They have openings come up relatively frequently for copywriters and marcom managers. I sent my resume and applied probably a half dozen times in 2 years when I first moved up here -- they never even acknowledged receiving it. :sigh:

I've lived off most of what was supposed to be my retirement savings while trying to restart. I don't have enough to make it through my last year of school, so am praying for something to break my way. And am afraid after I get through school, nobody will hire me for that either.
