This is a timely topic for me. I have two cats that are very overweight – they are both almost 20 lbs. I’ve tried all sorts of diet foods and nothing is working. They are currently on Wellness Diet. My vet wants me to try Science Diet’s prescription diet food for cats. I’m always skeptical of the brand that the vet sells because I feel like they get kick-backs. Has anyone had success with Science Diet’s prescription diet food?

Their veterinary diets are better than their 'normal' ones. But, for overweight kitties, I've always found that wet food is best. Dry food is full of calories and such. When Toby needed to lose a couple pounds, I started giving him more wet than dry. He's now at 15lbs. (all muscle, he's HUGE, very tall, etc.), and eats only 1/3 cup dry, and 1/2 6oz. can of wet a day. I actually just uped his dry from 1/4 cup because he was looking a bit too lean.

I admit, with embarrassment, that I don't know very much about cat food. This even though my family is full of "cat people". Anyone have some resources they can point the ignorant towards that I should be reading?
I feed Hill's Science Diet. The Cat Site Forums is a great place, go to the Health & Nutrition forum and read away! There's all kinds of threads on which food to feed, what's good, what's not, etc. Science Diet is one of the 'not so great' foods, but tons of people feed it and their cats/dogs do fine on it. If you want to learn more, just read the label on the back and you'll see it's full of fillers and such that cats (esp. overweight cats) don't need. I fed it for a long time, since I figured it was a good food, then that huge pet food recall happened and I really started learning about what I was feeding my pets. The cats can get really spoiled with the wet food, esp. the 'kitty crack' brands (Fancy Feast, Whiskas, etc.). It's like kids getting spoiled eating candy all the time, since those foods aren't that great. That's why mine have NEVER been given anything but what I feed now, I'm afraid they'd go on strike!
Interesting Kady. My vet (who is an avid cat person herself) says that you NEED to feed them wet and dry food for proper urinary tract health.
I'll ask her when I see her next week why that is. We've always done it, so I never had to ask. They have free choice kibble and they get wet food morning and evening. I've never had a problem with them NOT eating the kibble.

Oh, I DO feed all of mine wet AND dry
. I started feeding the wet food when Toby started with his UT issues. I just meant that I've never fed mine any Fancy Feast, Whiskas, etc., because I'm afraid they'll turn their noses up to the more healthy food after eating the 'kitty crack'
The only time we fed the Fancy Feast was when my mom's kitty was really sick and we were trying to get him to eat ANYTHING, we didn't care about how healthy it was, we just wanted him to EAT.

Ahhhh okay.
We feed ours the little pouches of Friskies. Did the Nutro stuff, but when they had the recall, we switched to the Friskies because it was readily available and unaffected by the recall.
It's a dollar a day of the wet food to feed them!

Oh god, I know, it can get expensive. I don't even like to look at what I spend on their food! Alot of people do say that if you're feeding them a high quality dry, you can save a bit and feed them a lower quality wet, or visa versa. I choose to feed high quality everything, so I definitely spend alot!

I actually feed my barn kitties Maximum Nutrition sold by Walmart. I was feeding them Blue Seal Kittie Krunchies, but was running out, it was a sunday so I figured I'd hit walmart for a carryover bag. When I read the ingredients, and compared it to some of the pricey brands, I picked up a bag. Cats love it. I switched.
