It looked 98% healed on thursday...then BOOM, friday couldnt walk on it. Off to the clinic he went, and even though he had xrays on sunday which showed nothing...there is now a piece of bone chipped off the hock.

So he has to have surgery to remove it.....sigh...........

Update.....He goes in at 11 tomorrow

MAR, I didn't see your first post, but it sounds just like an injury my mare had. Initially she had a puncture wound to the side of her hock, and initial x-rays showed no damage. We treated with Naxcell and a topical DMSO/cortisone. The actual wound was healing fine, but the hock had a lot of swelling and she was little off. I took her to Auburn and their x-rays showed chips. The surgeon said that chips sometimes take a few days to separate from the bone enough to show on x-rays. They did arthroscopic surgery and removed 5 good-sized chips and flushed the joint, as there was hair and debris in the joint capsule.

She came home with a lovely stifle-to-fetlock wrap (Elasticon was my friend) that she wore for two weeks until the stitches came out, and was on strict stall rest for 4 weeks. After that, she could be handwalked for short periods for another two weeks, and then turned out for another 2 weeks. She was on weekly Adequan injections for 8 weeks and they recommended injecting her hocks in 6 months.

I took her back to Auburn to be re-checked at 8 weeks and they gave her the go-ahead to start back lightly under saddle. I walked her for a week and then light trot work for another week, then light WTC for another 2 weeks. After a month she was back to regular work.

My girl has no visible scarring or any lameness from her little ordeal. It's been 3 years and she's doing 2nd/3rd level dressage with no problems. I do have her on monthly Adequan shots and have her hocks injected around once a year, but she is 18, so even without an injury she would probably be on some sort of maintenance.

Jingles for your guy!

Thanks guys!!! Gawd its been one hack of a week!

Charlie (yes his name is Charlie....and every time I call him I say "we're on a bridge Charlie..lol) is feeling well today according to the horsepital. He will have surgery later in the week.

And yes that's what they told me, there really wasnt anything we could have done differently, that is would take 10-14 days for it to show up.

His owner really loves him, and thank goodness he is insured! I will forward this thread to her, she is a great lady!
