I was giving our dog his heart worm medicine when I noticed the box says 'ivermectin'. So, it turns out that Heartguard has ivermectin and pyrantel in it. A year's dosage for my dog is $50. A year's dosage for a horse is about, oh, $100. What the heck? My horse is 20 times larger than the dog! Anyone in the know who can explain this phenomenon? |

Yep...consumers are just stupid. I know that's not always the case....but the average dog owner isn't all that worldly. Not that the *average* horse owner is, either. One thing I have learned from other discussion boards is that the clientele that frequent online disucussion boards are generally better informed than the general public. It's a sad commentary on life in general....that the *average* [parent, dog owner, horse owner, etc.] really doesn't understand anything that their [teachers, pediatrician, vets] tell them.......pretty sad. Unfortunately, it's hard to "integrate" into the mainstream, because there are lots of people who really don't care to understand. [Seriously, have you seen that they now make "pre-measured" dog food portions in little bags for those people that either can't master a measuring cup or are too lazy to use one??] Apologies to anyone who use these..........I've had a couple glasses of wine.... <_< I'll admit, there are many things I don't care to understand -- e.g. make my telephone WORK. I don't really care to know HOW it works] -- but there are lots of other people who really do blindly follow the "experts" in the field they are interested in. With regard to living things, I do take a more informed interest. [Although people probably consider me a big pain in the rear!] |

You are so correct... I know people who dose their dogs with horse wormers (I give my dogs Panacur at times for tapes - works great) and they are just fine. You can do so as well - just do the math! I personally prefer the Heartgard because it comes in a YUMMY CHEW! That is probably somewhat responsible for the increased cost. But part of it is just that people WILL pay higher prices because they don't know better. Not always the case though - there was a thread on TOB discussing the price difference in Previcoxx and Equioxx... the Previcoxx is way cheeper. Go figure. |

It is not a good idea to give equine ivermectin to dogs; it is far to easy to overdose them and end up with thousands of dollars of vet bills just to save a few dollars a year. |
