My sister in law, Kerri , is now looking to rent by the first of May and is considering these areas below. If anyone can give us input as to positives, negatives, safety, road congestion, or other issues to consider that would be fabulous. What would you be looking for if you were renting and traveling to Vallejo for work? We know about the tolls one way to some of the places, but do the bridges get crowded and backed up? Any input or suggestions. We would like input on: Benicia Crockett Rodeo Hercules Pinole Sonoma Thank you so much for your help! |

Like I said, I live in El Sobrante (a little hidden unincorporated town right next to Pinole) so I spend my life pretty much in all the towns you mention (except Benicia and Sonoma). Benicia - Cute little town right on the Carquinez straight. A cute little town, semi-historical, with some new development. Stinky a lot of the time since it's right across from Martinez and all the big refineries. If I were single and young this is the town I would probably chose. Crockett - Another little town on a hill looking over the Carquinez bridge. The trainer that rides my horse sometimes lives there. It's a little run down and also can get pretty stinky from the Rodeo refineries. Definitely a little more of a "biker" town. Rodeo - I would not want to live in Rodeo. Older neighborhoods are really run down and not safe, except for some brand new development that is part of the whole housing fiasco. It was way overdeveloped with HUGE homes that half are empty. REALLY polluted air from the refinery. Hercules - A bit up and coming, with some older neighborhoods. There have been some recent developments, and a lot of new people have moved into that area, mostly a family atmosphere though. The BEST sushi restaurant EVER is there though. We have good friends that love living there, but again they are a family with kids. Pinole - Kinda the same as Hercules but not quite as nice. Sonoma - much more high end area with very expensive homes and estates. Everything is high end and geared towards wine country visitors. A sleepy town surrounded by open space. |

How can anyone afford to live in the Bay Area? I paid less than 200K for my house. You couldn't even buy a parking space for that around SF Bay I have a sibling who wants me to move out there (near the old naval base), but I would have to live in my car and when I felt the first earthquake, I'd be driving east faster than a speedin' bullet.

Are you talking about Mare Island? Wait until next year and you will most likely be able to buy a house in the area for around 200k. Not a big or fancy house, the "standard of living" (if you call your size of house that) is less here, but the prices are going to continue to drop. The "Bay Area" is a big area. It includes both high end and working class neighborhoods. Before the stupid bubble you could buy a nice home in a working class area for 200k. |
