Timing is a wierd thing. I was talking with Buryinghill1 about a week ago, and told her I wish Oprah would FINALLY do a show about puppy mills. Like her or not, people watch her, and she has an amazing power to get people to do what she tells them to!
Turn on the TV today, and there is the show I have been praying for for so long!

Yes, it was beyond horrendous to watch, and EVERYONE should watch it.
Horror is the reality at puppy mills, and people that buy puppies online or at a pet store should be forced to watch the horrendous facts. :mallet:

I agree, I'm not crazy for Oprah either, but her power is amazing.
In the past she has annoyed me for showing her "shopping trips" for her Goldens, etc.
She stated today that she didn't want to be a hyprocite anymore, and said she will never have another dog that isn't a rescue. I hope she means it!

I didn't see this thread in time, and I'm glad because it would be preaching to the choir and I have enough horrendous in my life without adding unecessary horrendous to it.

Having said that, and adding that I haven't liked or respected Oprah for many years, considering her huge, awestruck audience, I'm SO GLAD SHE DID A SHOW LIKE THIS. Also, I truly hope she means that she won't be a hypocrite any more and will only bring home rescue dogs from now on. :luck: If she lives up to her promise, she may manage to woo me into liking her again.

I missed it. I was at the vets office with my 2 rescue dogs (shots and nails)!
YEAH OPRAH!!! I think I will email the show.

We arrived at the vets and I opened up the back door of my CRV. Ruby (the spaniel) decides she is allowed to jump out. Oh no says BH1! I actually caught her in midair! The vets ofice is on a busy road and my 2 girls have no brains (yet) so I was terrified she'd get away. Just as I got her back in the car, Mick (the cattle dog) jumps out and I grabbed her like she was a baby falling from a burning building. If Mick got loose, NOBODY would ever catch her. Even food doesn't work for her. So we spent a few minutes in the parking lot working on our manners. Door open, dogs sit and wait. Leash on Ruby, Ruby sits. Mick is impossible to catch, and I don't want to frighten her so I had to crawl in to get her leash on. Leash on Mick, Mick sits. Then we sat with the door open and one by one were allowed out.
I was a wreck! I gave them 4 months to adjust to being out of jail. Ruby has learned sit and down (down is very hard for an alpha dog!) and Mick has learned sit. They also sit when the front door to the house is open, and wait. Serious dog training starts today! This has nothing to do with Oprah, but I just had to share it. Rescue dogs rock! These 2 are the hardest dogs I have ever trained (BH2 will attest to my dog training skills). My goal is for Mick to be a Therapy Dog (hahahahahahahahahahahaha, but I am going to try!) and for Ruby to be civil. Ruby is like a sulking teenager who gives you "the finger" a lot. Mick is, well, a Cattle Dog. Like a Golden Retriever on acid. They are both great dogs that need polish

I thought the show was very well done and covered all the bases, including the euthanasia that goes on far too much. Equal time was given to the puppy mills, pet stores, online sales. She pointed out the differences between puppy mills, who only see dogs as a cash crop with no social or companion value (they never even get names or leave their cages for their entire lives) and responsible breeders who research health, temperament, pedigree, before doing a litter, and are there to take back animals they have bred if their home doesn't work out.

The man who accompanied Lisa Ling to the puppy mills had forged a bond with the ones they visited (in Lancaster County, PA) so that he could rescue dogs they were about to discard (shoot) from their breeding "programs." It is not an easy thing to do, and he said there were several farms he wasn't welcomed on. He said that these people just don't see dogs the way we do and value them no more than an ear of corn.

Also a little curious about the Oprah dislike here. I am not a groupie, but I respect and admire the woman for how she has come from where she did to where she is now, she changed the focus of her shows several years ago to try to address more social issues and not just be another Jerry Springer type of talk show, she is one of the most generous philanthropists in the country and sincerely tries to do the right thing with her resources. She promotes reading and education above all else, takes learning and knowing about your health very seriously, has been a walking example of how to and how not to lose weight. Seriously, what is not to like?

A recent thread on Oprah delved into why some of us dislike her.

Me, in a nutshell -- in the early-mid 90s she was all spiritual with guests like Deepak Chopra. It turned out to seem more a very thin veneer of spirituality masking rampant materialism and a giant ego. Even in her "spiritual" phase, I saw her lose it, interrupt an "angel" guest and rip the "reformed" guest a good one, probably setting that poor woman's healing back to square one. The "angel" guest sat there protectively holding the sobbing "reformed" guest, turning her back to Oprah with a stunned and appalled look on her face. It was *not* a pretty sight and gave pretty good insight into her underlying character. The next time I was laid off, our culture and Oprah had moved on from the "spiritual" phase and she was all about rampant materialism. I stopped watching her at that point.

I just see her as a brilliant marketing maven with a giant ego and somewhat hypocritical. Yes, she gives away a lot of money. She's made well over a billion, so 1. she has plenty to give away, 2. giving some of it away helps her tax return without cramping her lifestyle one iota, and 3. giving it away on national t.v. simultaneously boosts her saintly image and her bottom line.

She's welcome to prove me wrong, but to do so she'll have to 1. shrink her humongous ego, 2. quietly and without fanfare put most of her billions to work helping the people and society that made her so wealthy to begin with, and 3. honor the promise she apparently just made on t.v. to only acquire rescue dogs for the rest of her life.

(Oh, and she can put a portion of her billions to helping dogs too. ;) )

How do you have any idea how much or to who Oprah gives money to privately?
It may be none, it may be millions. We have no way of ever knowing.

Anway, I'm not interested right now in battling over liking or disliking Oprah. I'm just glad she got the word out to millions of people yesterday about the abuse going on at puppy mills, and the importance of spay/neuter.

In one hour, Oprah can reach and influence more people than hundreds of rescue advocates can reach in a lifetime of work.

So for today Oprah, I <3 you!

BH2, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. Just answering LaurieP's question. And you're right, we have no way of knowing for sure. But her track record suggests every thing she does is part of her brand, so it's hard to imagine her doing anything that won't be used for that purpose. That's the image I get of her.

However, we do agree on the dog episode and I'm very glad she did it. I hope she does more of them. They will do far more to help the plight of those poor dogs than any one shelter could do.

I just watched the show on my DVR! I was in tears for an hour. I know about puppy mills and I have personal experiences with Animanl Shelter and euthanasia! :lonely:

In the late 70s I worked for the Humane Society. That is when they went from gassing animals to injections. Very few emplyees were qualified to do the injections after the change, So every few days we would put to sleep numerous animal. We would lock the door so no one could see. Then one by one the dogs were injected and left laying dead in the aisle. If anyone had stopped by they would have been shocked. It was awful. Many, many dogs laying dead and alone, their last moments spent in a cage! I was in the business for just a few months and adopted 2 animals. One a Borzoi on his 3rd pickup and then Kitty, my cute kitten who escaped from an attempt to be killed. We found her in the back lot and I took her home.

I am in the market for a new dog and of course will be searching the shelter. Most all of my animals are rescues, even Rosie my Belgain X who was a PMU baby! I have 3 kitties that I rescued last year. They are the lights of my life and I am happy to have saved their lives!

I am hoping Oprah made a difference with this show! I am not really a fan but I watch when the subject draws me in!

I will be sending a check to MLAR for sure!

Thanks Oprah for shedding light on a terribley upsetting subject!
