probably a good thing--he's a hell raiser. His best friend, who is married to his HS sweet heart is still up there Paul Beatty. Matt Maiolo is in Greenwich....think his father was the fb coach. If any of those names ring a bell and are helpful, I'm happy to try to help as best i can. |

DQ: you're absolutely right. I have been laid off twice. Once was two weeks before we were to close on our first house/condo. At the time i was infuriated, only got one weeks severance because I'd only been there for 8 months, but they KNEW i was buying a house, so I was so upset they couldn't have told me sooner. Heartbroken that we lost the house, we had to move out of our apartment (which we loved but had already given notice that we were leaving). It was a rough time but I found a job as a consultant within 30 days which turned into a full time job 30 days later, and I got a 20% raise and stayed there 5 yrs. we also ended up being able to buy a house in a nicer town (and a real house not a condo), 6 months later so it was TOTALLY for the best. The other time was while I was on maternity leave...working in HR i knew they were doing layoffs and I also knew we had too many people in the dept and since i was on leave and didn't want to come back, I asked my boss if she'd consider eliminating my position. I also knew what they gave as severance and had been there for 5 yrs so I knew I'd get a nice package...I did. They paid me for 8 months! So i got to take the first year off with my twins, and then I found my current job, which has been awesome. Sorry for the book, but unfortunately in my job, I do have to fire people and lay them off all the time, and I am always very hopeful and positive that they'll find something even better. My hubby though has a pretty sweet situation in that he works from home and makes decent money, so unfortunately something probably will have to give on both of those fronts. But again, he's great at what he does, so as long as he can keep a positive attitude then he'll be ok. |

I owned a recruiting company for ten years and was very successful in executive search. Everybody thought I was nuts to sell the company and go board retired horses but anyway . . . The best thing anyone can do who needs a job IS GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND OFF THE JOB LISTING SITES. Network, renew old contacts, go to chamber meetings, society meetings in your field of work, or whatever. Identify companies you want to work for, find out who the correct contact is (NOT HR, within the dept you want to be) and make contact with them. Have MULTIPLE versions of your resume that highlight different aspects of your career and accomplishments appropriate to the company/job/person you are presenting it too. Your full time job needs to be finding a job - and I DON"T mean cruising job boards and e-mailing resumes. I would spend some time doing that yes, but probably devote the least amount of my 8-10 hours of job searching a day to that activity. Be able to answer these questions easily and work them into an interview: 1. How have you made previous companies money 2. How have you saved them money 3. How have you streamlined their processes And most importantly (people always fought me on this one and I don't know why), remember that the person/people interviewing you and making hiring decisions have one thing on their mind: "if my company hires you will it make me look good?" Note I did not say "are you the absolute best person for the job?" There is a difference. So find a way to touch on that in the interview and address that for them. Practice interviewing and practice ways to answer or bring up these things. Good luck, and hopefully he will be on to bigger and better things before you know it! |

great advice Onthebit! He actually has two months of outplacement services too so he's excited to get in touch with them and get practicing interviewing etc. He hasn't had alot of practice job hunting - he was at one company for over 10 yrs and then this last one for 2, so he's not been out on the market much in his career. You're absolutely right on target with everything! One great tip that he's having luck with is Linkedin.com...he's been getting in touch with former colleagues that way and getting job and freelance leads, great site! |

Be sure to use www.monster.com and the other job websites. Also, remind him to look for freelance gigs. They usually pay well and are a lot of fun. I was an Advertising Copywriter for years and then I went freelance and I love it. There seem to be plenty of jobs out there in Medical Marketing, so that may be an option. Good luck to you guys. Edit: I had only read the first page, so I didn't notice that everyone else mentioned Medical. Tell him to make up some samples of Medical Writing to add to his portfolio so that have concrete evidence that he can write what they need. He should also tailor his resumes when he sends them to jubs that aren't in his current field so that they are more generic. It will help him get in the door and then he can sell himself.

Hmmmm...not sure if anyone's mentioned this idea yet... What about going to your local Chamber of Commerce and finding out if they have any "business mixers"...ie, after work or after dinner get togethers wherein people mix and meet to get to know other entrepreneurs and business folks. I did this...I was laid off in one career area and had long wanted to switch out what I was doing...so I made up a business card with some skills on it and decided to go to the Chamber of Commerce Mixers, Breakfasts and other meetings...ostensibly to hire myself out individually as a contract person. Which is what happened...quite sucessfully to my surprise! I landed all sorts of contacts and was able to shift my career path in the process. All of that eventually ended up giving me the network to find a VERY juicy job in my new career path. At any rate, don't discount the Chambers...you NEVER know who you can meet and what info you can find out about the hiring/employment news in your area! |

Anyone know if it's better to get an individual high deductible plan or something?? This is gonna be $13,000 a year ......sick stomach feeling.....

Unfortunately Medical Care in the USA is a joke! Sorry to hear about this. Guess it will truley motivate your husband to get a new job ASAP?? Are you still going on Vacation? Seems like maybe you shouldn't?
Sorry to be so harsh but the real world is truly ascending on you! I am the breadwinner in my family and due to the the cost of insurance I will be stuck in the corporate world forever it seems?! I have a brother who has no insurance. He is very ill and truly unable to get Medical care so I understand. He has worked for himself his entire life and now he is too sick to work. He will die from his heart problems but no one cares! The best laid plans never seem to work out for many of us! My thoughts are with you and your family! Hope you guys can cope and that there is a light at the end of your tunnel!

go to www.ehealthinsurance.com and SHOP FOR BETTER RATES than your COBRA. COBRA plans are usually very expensive, because companies want to offer great benefits to their employees. DO NOT LET COBRA LAPSE until you've lined something up on ehealthinsurance. 1) Determine how high you can keep your deductible...$1k? $5k? even $10k? When I was consulting, I kept it at $5k for the kids, thinking I could afford $5k out of pocket, but if one of us had to be hospitalized or on prolonged treatment, I'd never survive the $40k or $50k bill. The higher the deductible, the lower your monthly payment will be. 2) Make sure you get a statement from COBRA insurance company as to your last day covered. Most insurance companies will cover pre-existing conditions if there is no lapse in coverage between the old plan and the new. MAKE SURE you find out any restrictions on pre-existing conditions before you sign up for a plan through ehealthinsurance. 3) Determine if you can live without paid eye care or dental care. Your COBRA payment should go down if you elect not to keep these benefits because you can survive without them for a year...that may may make your COBRA payment palatable enough to stay for a couple of months. Hoping this helps save you some $$$. Hang in there! |

well at this point our vacation is already paid for and non-refundable...so we're going
The good or decent news, is that I can go FT at my job in September, but that won't help too much (only $325 per month towards medical)He's definitely motivated but the pressure is on for sure. He's going to outplacement for 4 days next week before our trip so hopefully that will help.... eekekekekekekekek

Definitely check out insurance plans on your own. Mr. Fishy just left his old job a couple months ago and the health insurance was a big issue for me because I don't get it through my work. Turns out that we could have gotten insurance on our own with the same carrier for *cheaper* than when he got it through his previous employer. And COBRA - what a joke - it was waaaaayyyyyy more expensive. I don't even know how it is supposed to be attractive? Maybe people just don't shop around on their own? But please take care of your family and make insurance a priority. My co-worker and her husband have their own home business (in addition to her working at my company) and they just got insurance a couple years ago on their own. Not shortly thereafter their daughter was dx with bone cancer and the insurance has been a major help in the situation. Good luck to you. Better things are to come, I'm sure! |

ok here's something else to worry about...our house is currently on the market because our adjustable rate mortgage is scheduled to change 6/1 and we wanted a bigger house in the neighboring town. We have had no interest so far and expect to stay here but April/May is when the market really heats up here. Our ARM may actually make our mortgage go down this year because of all the rate cuts, and our homeowners insurance is going down, so theoretically, we'll be fairly stable until next year's rate adjustment. so on the one hand we shouldn't sell the house because we can't qualify for a mortgage without my hubby's job (though if he is a freelancer and works 40+ hours a week for several months, we'd probably be able to get one. We could also rent a house somewhere but my kids are starting 1st grade and it matters where they go to school... Part of me likes that the house is on the market because if we have to move somewhere else due to whatever job he gets we have the flexibility. BUT if he doesn't get a job, then we'll be better off taking it off the market and staying put. What would you do? Keep it on or take it off.... ETA: I should mention we have about $150-170K equity in the house depending on what it should sell for...so it would be nice to have a chunk of change like that in the bank earning interest for a few months... |

I suggest looking into refinancing. The rates are still pretty low (although fluctuating). Many mortgage companies are now offering refinancing at no cost. No points, no documentation costs, no nothing. If they don't offer, you can always ask/demand. It might make sense to give yourselves some stability. Assuming you can afford the refinance rate of your mortgage. I hate playing the ARM game. Hate it. Don't do it to yourselves unless absolutely necessary. Once you refinance, you can still sell. Nothing prevents that. |

well the problem with refinancing is that you can't refinance if you're house is on the market currently or within 6 months...or so I've been told. We were planning on taking it off the market in July/August and then refinancing 6 months later before the next adjustment. |
