:jingles: MayaTy and IBelieve. MayaTy, I've never know anyone to get laid off at a "good" time. It's usually right after you buy a house or have a new baby or right before Christmas. Just before a vacation isn't as bad as some I've seen. Tell hubby to enjoy the vacation...really don't think about it until you return. Then he should work full time to find a new job. Internet is just one avenue. Marcom really is about networking and is where the good jobs are found, rarely in the classifieds.

Kalitude, hi tech lost something like 350K jobs after the 2000 crash. It never recovered, but I expect that finance will. The feds don't give a flying eff about main street, because that just means cheaper labor. But they'll never let wall street stay down because that would hurt them.

I worked in hi-tech marketing communications for almost 20 years. I was laid off the 1st time in '93. Worked out of my home for about 18 months, then got a very lucrative contract in a different division of the same company. Turned that 3 month gig into 5 years, then left from burnout after the company was bought out and being run into the ground. I was picked up by a startup, where I had a nice chunk of stock options that turned into worthless paper 1 year later when company folded. So that was my 2nd layoff. I was picked up by a tiny consulting firm where the CEO had illusions of grandeur. She grew her companyfrom 8 people to 50 in less than a year. Then came 9/11 and a major reality check. She dropped back down to 8, and I had my 3rd layoff. I sent out a couple hundred resumes and got all of 3 responses -- 2 sarcastic, meanspirited bwitches and 1 super bargain hunter. I never really recovered, which is why now I'm back in school and still trying very hard to start over. I've been rejected by Home Depot, Lowes, Hannafords, and a host of small, local companies.

I'm not talking about those few big time Wall Street types, I am talking about the banking and mortgage industries, and all the support personnel. 20k jobs at Citibank will most likely be eliminated at best. We're looking at 200k people just in the finance industry . Add to that everyone involved in the real estate or building industries, the millions working in retail as sales start sinking, the small business owners that have been going under. We are teetering on the edge of hundreds of thousands of people out of work.

I work in technology in the finance industry, we are outsourcing almost everything, so those jobs left behind are rapidly going overseas on top of it. The writing is on the wall. With 9 TRILLION in national debt and a war hemorrhaging money there's only so much the feds can do.

KaliTude, maybe the original poster needed a little more upbeat outlook! Not so doom and gloom when she is going through a tough time. You may be right or you may not be, but right now we need to support a fellow TOC who needs jingles not harsh realities.

MT, :jingles: I work in marketing communications. I will keep an ear out! Take a breath and try to keep looking at the big picture. When a door closes, a window opens!

Ok, I see. In that case, Kali, I suggest you start looking seriously at retooling yourself. I know it's not easy -- I never in a million years expected that in my mid-50s I'd be back in school training for an entirely different career. I knew it was going to get really bad...I only wish I'd understood how bad a few years sooner, and that there hadn't been so many people sucking up my resources trying to rip me off.

Anyway, it is possible to retool at almost any age, and forewarned is forearmed. And FlashGordon is right. Healthcare is a solid field with *worldwide* demand. There are a number of possible careers with decent salaries with just associate degrees, some of which have 0 unemployment. My particular choice has 0 unemployment and comparable salaries around the world.

You're still employed, so at least you have that. Just start perusing the local university/college catalogs.

may, where are you guys located?

RH: We are in Ridgefield CT, about an hour outside NYC.

He would be fine with any industry but of course he really only has experience in the IT/Software industry so it's hard to convince the recruiters that he can do something different like healthcare. The good news is that he is good at what he does and he can freelance so perhaps he can get into a new industry by breaking in as a freelancer, who knows. Thanks for the suggestions!!

In 2002 I was laid off from my Civil Engineering job - I was not licenced at that time, was last hired and even though the road design area wanted me (I was in the Environmental section - which that company has now COMPLETELY phased out iwth layoffs) there were no positions at that company.

I was upset - I was 39 - so I gotcha on the age thing too. I was mad. I was mostly scared with school loans due.

I can say in hind sight: That layoff was the BEST thing that ever happened to me.

I got a better job, better pay, better bennies that I never would have gone looking for, but because I was laid off it made me a lean mean job hunt machine.

#1 - I can't stress this enough: Get the Book WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE.

My old ways of job hunting were obsolete. Totally obsolete. This book taught me HOW to hunt, WHERE to hunt, what to do when I GOT IN THE DOOR.

The author updates it - and it was THE thing that kept me going those days I felt hopeless.

There are many of us that are going to experience this - I think now it is a part of life. And it was the BEST thing that ever happened to me, career wize, money wize, job satisfaction wize.

I actually thanked the person that laid me off a few years later. And it was a happy thank you too.
