and I'm feeling a bit stressed. I work part time in a great consulting, work at home gig I've been doing for almost 5 yrs but now we'll lose benefits, and our medical COBRA will probably be almost $1K a month. UGH, am I going to have to work FT again??? perish the thought - I have 5 yr old twins so this has been perfect for me.

and my poor hubby, he's never been in this situation before and he's turning 40 next month...I hope he finds something soon :(

and we go on vacation next week, way to ruin the vacation!

Just looking for some jingles please :(

Aw, that sucks. But it will open the door to something even better. I know the light at the end of the tunnel is hard to see right now, but I promise, it will be for the best!

I know from personal experience how hard and scary it is to be laid off...but have faith that the right thing will come along.

Been there done that my friend but Mr. G never went back to work. Of course we have no children so if we want to be poor then we can. I will jingle that your hubby finds the perfect job soon and that you can stay home with your part time job!

Thanks guys...it's tough because he is the primary breadwinner and the one who has the benefits. I'm sure he'll find something but I do feel badly for him...and us...gonna be quite stressful since we were just staying afloat with his FT job. :,(

I just saw a great program on the current layoff situation. One of the most important things a job seeker can do (according to the show) is to hire a professional job finder. I think they were called head hunters. I remember they said to start immediately when you get laid off. No vacations, no rest time. They said that can be bad for your initiative to get off your butt. Put in a 10 hour day each day getting a job.

Think of this as not depressing. Think of it as an opportunity.

DO NOT skip the COBRA insurance! I had it for only one month and during that month had emergency surgery! Over $30K! I almost skipped the COBRA :jaw:

MayaTy....we are in the same situation. My hubby was laid off on 3/7, so this is week 3 and he's driving me crazy! I also work part time and have a 4 year old and a 7 year old. I "need" to work part time so that I can be there to shuffle the girls to dance, soccer, riding, etc. I don't carry insurance but his company will pay the COBRA payment until 6/30/08. If he doesn't find something by then we are responsible for the $954/mo. insurance bill.
This is also his first time being laid off and he's really been through the whole range of emotions. He was angry, sad, mad, frustrated, etc. but now he's just plain bored! He spends 8+ hours a day on the computer looking for a job but it takes time for them to call him back and he's not one to sit around.
He got his first unemployment payment last week which eased his mind a little bit. It's not really that much less than he was making once you take out the 401K and insurance. Hopefully your hubbys' company will pick up the COBRA payment for a little while for you.
Good luck to you guys. It will work out for the best I'm sure. Change is hard. Try to enjoy your vacation anyway, it might be good for him to get away for a little while!

Thanks all

Ibelieve, so sorry you're in the same situation. I have been so lucky to be home for my kids, i can't even think of having to be stuck in an office 40+ hours a week. There is a possibility that i can pick up enough hours to be considered FT at my job, but we are a tiny consulting firm and don't offer medical insurance, just $300/month towards your own. Fortunately I think I figured out that our coverage will be around $600-750 because his employer(former employer) is a big company (20,000+ employees) and probably got nice cheap rates and we elected the cheapest HMO...so best I can figure it will be less than $1000 hopefully.

Unfortunately the unemployment check will be around 50% of his normal pay if he gets it withouth taxes taken out....so it will *help* but not alot. they are giving him severance until early June and will pay the cost of COBRA through then....so thats something.

he can also freelance with them, so he'll hopefully be able to get some $$ and not have to go on unemployment quite yet.

UGH - so unfun. Best of luck to you Ibelieve and thanks all for letting me vent my stress!
PS Burying Hill1 - believe me we will be electing COBRA, it's too important and we have young kids....so that's a definite! I'm only sad it only goes for 18 months!

MayaTy - it sounds like we are in almost the same situation. My husband also gets a severance until June but we are trying not to use that if we don't have to. We figure that it will be a bonus that we can use to pay something off if he finds a job quickly. He expects an offer from a very small company that would love to have him, but he doesn't think that they will be able to afford him! He had a second interview with them on Tuesday that lasted 5.5 hours (he got home at 8:50pm)!!!! I'm not sure if that says that the company expects him to work long hours or what!?!?!

My husband sets aside time every day to search for a job and his goal is to put out 2-3 resume's per day. He's decided that he would be putting in time at a job somewhere so he may as well spend the time looking for a job for himself. He's been pretty disciplined except for today when he decided that he HAD to go grocery shopping. Hey, I'm not complaining.

I have made an effort to just be there for him, listen to what he has to say at the end of the day (even though I can't possibly keep all fo the job info. straight) but I have to let him make the decision about what job he takes. He was miserable at his last job, but loved the company/not the boss, so his decision is very important to his happiness.

Another bit of advice...be careful what you tell/say in front of your kids. My 7 year old is very worried about Daddy's J.O.B. situation. Kids pick up on the stress and emotions of it all and worry, even when you think they don't understand!

Sorry to hear about your situation, I hope your husband finds work soon. The anticipation is as many as 200k lay-offs this year in financial services companies/banks alone. Right now my chance of being laid off is about 50/50 and getting worse daily.

I recommend your husband apply for unemployment immediately, it can sometimes take a while to get benefits. Better to get the ball rolling in case things don't work out as planned.

Adding my :jingles: even though we emailed.

That is a good point about being careful around the kids, although since he's home frequently they probably won't notice the change in routine as much as someone who is always at the office.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you guys. What kind of work (specifically) is he looking for? Maybe if we all keep our eyes open it will help?? [See me working the angle to get you guys to move closer!] But actually my dh knows a lot of people in NYC so you never know where paths might cross.

:luck: :luck:
