I used to feed Pinnacle but then I moved and it was harder to get. Now I feed Canidae and the dogs love it. I've never had any food-related health problems and they all look and act younger than they are (Barley the Weim is 12 this year and Kenya the Rhodesian has got to be 15 I swear!). Funny thing is, though, that the cats HATE Felidae and won't touch it. Go figure. Love the halo pose! Now we just need puppy pictures!!!

CDE...I've had Greyhounds before and we have a friend who breeds Irish Wolfhounds. LOVE them all!!!! My user nic, "Jill", is after my brindle Greyhound that died the year I became active on the boards. We had them for 12 years and loved them to the moon. I worked for the Greyhound Placement group for a time at their kennel, too.We really want another full-sized Grey, but, hubby is still broken hearted after loing his best girl, Jill, a few years back. The puppy is the first dog he's ever really "wanted" since then. Da Monkus is MY dog and he's somewhat of an acquired taste. he is whippet-sized (24 pounds!!) IG. He fits in pretty well with our household, but he is a bit "clingy". I love him to pieces, even though he's "special". Picture should be posted tomorrow night!! We're going to pick her up in the early evening. She looks SO much like MissBri's Josie!

Some brand (can't remember which, I only saw it once) does salmon and sweet potato, and I've also seen some venison and other more exotic types in a local dog specialty boutique. I can get California Naturals from any of the local grain/horse/hardware stores up here. They have a herring and sweet potato, which Jakey liked but I don't because he reeked of fish and oh, the breath They also have beef and rice; maybe Archie can have that? The chicken and rice kibbles label (that's all I have on hand) says: 100% chicken meal (no glutens or soy), brown rice, white rice, sunflower oil (preserved with citric acid and "natural mixed tocopherois") flaxseed, natural flavors, and the usual vitamins and minerals. 21% protein, 11% fat, 1.5% fiber max, 10% moisture. They offer puppy, I think senior, and also overweight formulas. Their formulas are all hypoallergenic, with all natural ingredients, and all domestic productsas local as possible to reduce shipping costs. |

I can't feed the "fish" varieties to any of mine. Working at the Aquarium gave me a unique perspective on the fish that are utilized for pet-food consumption.
We only fed restaurant grade fish to the inhabitants. I'm sure that some of the more premium stuff uses higher grades, but it makes me wonder. Just like the sources for the "meat" products make me wonder about in other pet food. Whole meat...from where??? I'd probably be better off NOT asking myself those questions!! |

I personally SWEAR by Eagle. It was the only food I fed. It is not sold in grocery stores and many breeders use it. I was a distributor of it with my old partner originally in this area. The one thing you can tell about a good dog food, is the lack of product coming out the other end!

My Ozy developed itchy feet/skin and showed positive for a lamb allergy, too. We switched him to Wellness Fish & Sweet Potato with WONDERFUL results. (It's human-grade fish, mareseatoats!) Chyna is still on the California Natural lamb & rice kibble (also human-grade), because the fish-based kibble gave her the runs. I've heard great things about Merrick and Eagle, but we're at the "why mess with success" point. |

We have always loved Eukanuba Lamb & Rice. My older brittany had some stomach issues as a pup and it was the best thing for him. And much smaller turds...for sure! We had him on Nutro Lamb & Rice (if I recall correctly) for a while and it just didn't agree with him, although I understand it's a decent food. When we were showing him we tried some sort of German dog food (can't recall but also known as Solid Gold?) that was highly recommended by a Golden Retriever breeder who we knew and it was just terrible for my guy....he lost weight and had big giant turds...but her dogs thrived on it. So it does go to show that not every dog does well on the same food. Good luck! |

We feed Solid Gold dry..the Wee Bites and the senior formula for the older doggie, and Merrick's canned food. Plus, they get cooked chicken and liver, and some beef. Also some veggies, a little plain yogurt maybe once a week. I do flax oil daily for good coat and skin. Lots of people are raw diet advocates and it works for them (I'm on some breed lists) the raw food is available frozen. |

Another fan of Innova. I feed my lab the large breed food. My vet won't let me feed him anything else! |

There are several brands I really like (Eukanuba, Innova, Canidae, Eagle, and Royal Canin) but currently my pack (2 corgis, ages 7 & 9, and a 10 year old lab) eat Eukanuba Veterinary Diet Fish and Potato because of the lab's allergies. They all have done very well on it. Its the only thing the lab doesn't have any problems with. The other dogs are healthy and slick. While not a dog food, I will mention that the Royal Cannin Duck and Green Pea for cats has been a lifesaver for my Maine Coon who has allergy induced IBS. I didn't know if I was going to be able to keep him with all the problems I was having, but now he is completely normal. I tried tons of different foods but it was their Hypoallergenic 23 (only soy protien) and now the Duck and Green Pea (I wanted a real meat source) that turned him in to a normal cat. I am not a fan of Science Diet by and large, though their prescription foods have helped many an animal. I think their regular food is subpar. |

kikki I am with you on the Science Diet. LOVE the Rx formulas...the "regular" food...not so much. I talked to a local gal who has a pet shop and carries several brands and she suggested I try the Solid Gold Wolf Cub for the new pup. She can't get the Eagle Pack puppy formulas here in Texas because of a regulation concerning Glucosamine in puppy food. She thought I would like the Solid Gold as an alternate. She's giving me some samples to try this week before I buy it. I'm also going to pick up some "Holistic Lamb and Rice" for Da Monkus, who is EXCEPTIONALLY itchy. I do wonder if the food is the culprit. They recently added "New and Improved" to the bag, which means they've changed something, and it doesn't seem to be agreeing with him.Thank you again for all the comments and opinions. LOVE this board!!!!

jilli, I started my chessie on Innova on the recommendation of a holistic DVM. She thought his skin problems might be caused by food allergies. He loved the Innova and his skin was noticeably better in a week, and looked perfect after 2 weeks on it. He maintained a great weight on it and really looked great. I love the fact that they use all human grade ingredients, no wheat or corn, and they were one of the very few brands affected by the contaminated dogfood recalls. I'm fairly certain they make all of their foods, instead of contracting it out like most of the other manufacturers. I had to switch to the Royal Canin when he became diabetic (caused by Ehrlichia) and he doesn't like it nearly as well as his Innova. Plus, the Royal Canin is ridiculously expensive. |

My FAV is Solid Gold. Otherwise, I like Nutro. I sometimes mix with Science Diet Oral, but would not feed Science Diet alone...don't like the ingredients/byproducts. |

OMG. If someone told me changing my dogs food could make him more neurotic, food obsessive and wild- I would have said he couldn't possibly get worse. Yikes. After reading this thread I figured I would put Shadow on some better food. I thought it might help with his GI issues, poop eating problems, or maybe it wouldn't help anything. I bought a small of Avoderm and I was pretty happy with it-- then I bought a small bag of Blue Buffalo. Holy cow- my dog is psychotic. He is running to the dog bowl ALL day long- practically knocking me down the steps, he is nervous and jumpy on the leash and follows me around all day (wanting to eat). He's like an OTTB on free choice grain :psycho:. I am feeding him less than two cups a day--- I think we are going back to regular food.   |

You have a puppy Magic Milo was on Fromm kibble (salmon) and it's good stuff. The whole family probably could have eaten it. He got lots of different types of wet, California Natural and Wellness and Solid Gold and all those good kinds. But he was licking his feet non stop so we put him on a hypoallergenic food for the past 4 months. Just to see if it helped. And it didn't at all. He is still really licking his poor feet. Now we are waiting to get him in to get allergy testing. Any insight from you other doggy people would be great. He has pink feet (black standard poodle)
