With the new puppy coming along, I've started doing a little research into dog food. Primary reason is because they've started her on a puppy food from the feed store that I was initially leary of. Did a little reading about it this morning, and I think it might be pretty good stuff. It's called "PMI Exclusive" ??? Currently Da Monkus gets Nutro Max Lamb and Rice and he's done very well on it. I tried the "Blue Buffalo" brand thinking it might help little mister occasional seizure, but then we got itchy skin, so I went back to the Nutro. So what do you feed your precious pups and why?? Mellie, bird is NOT on my pups menu. No comment from the cats.

Most puppies like your most expensive shoes for starters as an appetizer. So purchase one expensive Jimmy Choo dog shoes, to go.
Next, you do have a new couch, right? Good, cuz pups like those too. Specially if they have shreadable stuffing. Purchase some really expensive undies too cuz there is NOTHING pups like so much as a young ladies undies - those, presented to the mail man, are sure to ensure pups some serious pets. HArd cover books are a wonderful puppie teether too - the bigger expensive text books are best, but pups will settle for homework-due-tomorrow too. |

I like Science Diet Lamb & Rice. Well, I don't like it, my fur-people do
and they look and feel great!Small poop. Great coats. So far the Science Diet has been the most liked premium brand. We are sticking with it

Horse pooh, fresh from the oven, has always been a fave of Jakey. Also at the top of the list: cat pooh, goat pooh, and turdsicles of all flavors. Also quilt stuffing, toy stuffing, and pretty much anything from the compost heap. All joking aside, when he was a little tyke and his hair started falling out, I switched to California Naturals. It costs the same as the other quality brands, is hypoallergenic, and everybody comments on how beautiful his coat is. Except the idjit at the dog park who seriously explained to his friend that you could tell Jakey "is a pit bull because of his iridescent coat." Best of all, it's made of all domestic ingredients, so during the melamine scare last year I didn't have to worry. |

after working in a pet store for 5 years i became very good at reading dog food bags. First thing to watch out for is wheat and corn based foods. Second is by products. Nutro is a good brand as is eukanuba. royal canin, natural balance ,natures recipe and innova are all very good natural dog foods. Also look to see if the puppy is a large breed to get large breed food. it helps with their growing rates and has a higher fat/protien ratio. |

Zack eats Purina one Lamb and Rice. I got him from the pound at 43 lbs with terrible food allergies. I tried Iams. He still had GI issues. So I tried Science Diet and it was crap. He was sick for weeks on it even after very very gradually changing him over to it. Someone suggested trying a lamb and rice formula, and that has been the best thing. He can't even eat chicken and rice formula without getting sick. He put on 20+lbs (will a just about perfect body condition score according to the vet) and his eyes are bright and coat is shiny. Make sure you read the label. Some of the biggest names that people think are great (ie. Science diet...can you tell Im not a fan?) have wheat as the first ingredient. Thats just a filler. You want meat as the first ingredient. I am a firm believer that you don't need to spend an arm and a leg for healthy dog food, you just need to read the label. One thing I think can help most dogs is a fish oil supplement with EPA and DHA (you can give them human pills) because it seems to help their coat and skin in general. |

Hi! I feed Pinnacle by Breeder's Choice. I also feed Merrick canned food. The Boston's love it! Nice poo (which they occasionally leave in their crates for me to see - but that is another story for another day). They have been on Pinnacle for 8 years now. No problems. They get the chicken formula. The canned food is just to add a little variety - like a spoonfull or two with the dry food. |

For the loverly Miss Josie..... She gets Eagle Pac Holistic Select for Large Breed Puppies. Josie's dog food It is more expensive, but I figure the first year it is more important to feed the 'good stuff'. I'll feed her this until I transition her to adult food somewhere between 14 and 18 months. My old dog Tara was fed Pro-Plan lamb/rice for most of her life - except the last couple of years. She lived to be almost 13yo and was a svelte and slender 110lb dog. My vet was amazed at how shiney, healthy, and hale Tara was right up until the last six months. Not sure what I'll transistion Josie to after the puppy food. She also love kittie tootsie rolls, fresh or old manure, fermented carcass. She's a master at unstuffing - comforters, toys, pillows, etc Another fav thing to do is to destroy her bedding in the crate. Oh, flower pots outside are simply toys (and a few of those are VERY large) and are soon empty, and, well, lets just say a plant would no longer want to be potted there. ANYTHING left down on the ground/floor is something to be chewed, torn, dismantled, destroyed. But I LOVE her! |

I'm a big fan of the Eagle Pack brand, particularly the Holistic Select line. They seem to use high quality ingredients and have good quality control. None of their products were affected by the big recall. Lola has a family history of beef allergies, so we have her on the Holistic Select Lamb & Rice. And she gets Sam's Yams for treats - those are her fav http://www.eaglepack.com/ |

There are a couple of great ones that I have found, favorites being Merrick (sp?) I think it is out of Texas but found in all of my local pet stores (all human grade) and the other is Solid Gold ~ originally all I could find is dry but, I'm not sure if its new to them, I have seen canned as well. I am a fanatic when it comes to picking doggy food! |

We feed Riley Innova. He likes it and we swear his "output" is less when he's on it versus other food he's tried. It's expensive, but not having to carry five doggy crap bags on every walk is totally worth it! Of course, he's a dog that would eat shredded cardboard if you fed it to him and have no problems (unlike the upstairs Beagle who explodes out both ends at the mere sight of anything but her special doggy food) |

As a pup we fed our lab Nutro large breed dry puppy food. As an adult she gets the Nutro large breed dry dog food . . . supplemented by cat poop and the Equine Senior that my gelding kindly throws on the floor for her. The adult Nutro has glucosamine in it, which I like. We're very pleased with how she has done on it. She has a super shiny coat, good skin, maintains good weight (although she would tell you that we starve her), and at 6 yrs old she still hasn't had to have her teeth cleaned. |

After doing TONS of research on pet foods are the whole pet food recall, I decided on Canidae for my 2 Labs. I stay away from all the 'popular' brands, like Science Diet, Purina, Iams (BLEH), etc. Just read the labels, and you'll see why. Most of those I listed are FULL of by-products and all kinds of crap. I also love the Chicken Soup line of pet foods, and they're much cheaper than alot of the other good, natural brands. When I have more time maybe I'll post a link to the site that tells you all about pet food, etc. |

I just switched my 2 over to Canidae. The food i was feeding before they liked but i had hard time getting them to eat it. They love the Canidae and gobble it up. I did get the Platinum version for senior and over weight dogs, since the one dog needs to lose about 5 lbs. So far it seems to be a hit. |
