Bumping this for good news: STATEMENTS FROM CHIACCHIA FAMILY April 3, 2008 - 5PM EDT Darren landed safely this afternoon in Buffalo to begin his long road of rehabilitation at the Erie County Medical Center. His flight was fortunately uneventful as his mother sat by his side. Darren continues to show progress with his cognitive deficits, but his walking is still limited to very short distances with the assistance of a therapy aid on each arm. The fundraiser last night at the WC Dover Farm was an enormous success, attended by more than 500 friends and fans, including several members of the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital staff who were so instrumental in Darren’s survival and treatment. Attendees traveled from as far as California. Janise Gray and Scott Evans of the Equestrian Aid Foundation were on hand, lending their superior administrative skills to the event. Other distinguished guests included State Senator Steve Oelrich, USEA President Jo Whitehouse, and legendary equestrian photographer Mary Phelps. Complementary food was provided by Outback, Bonefish, and other local establishments. Sales of custom tee-shirts and hats were brisk. The Sheriff’s department ensured the event was safe and orderly. The Family thanks the attendees as well as the many businesses and individuals who donated their services. The event featured six time Olympian Robert Dover riding Darren’s prized mount Windfall in a glorious display of Dressage artistry. Silent auction items included an offspring of Windfall which sold for $20,000.00. Another highlight of the evening was a video tribute to Darren accompanied by a cleverly adapted version of “My Way” sung by Walt Dover with such emotion that many were reduced to tears. Videotaped offers of support were also provided by Tallahassee Mayor Marks, Darren’s Olympic coach Mark Phillips, and many past and prospective members of the U.S. Equestrian team. The Chiacchia family was sad to leave their many new friends in Tallahassee, including their adopted family of Walt and Carol Dover. The hospitality extended by the Tallahassee community overwhelmed the family. They were provided lodging at the Dover home, vehicles for use, and daily care packages of food. Tallahassee reminds the family of their hometown of Buffalo where the community consistently rallies to support those in need. Special heartfelt appreciation is extended to Carol Dover for her Herculean efforts in organizing and running this truly amazing fundraising success with less than nine days notice. |
