Update from the Tallahassee paper:

"He's still unconscious and in critical condition with more broken ribs than originally suspected. But Darren Chiacchia, 43, seems to be more relaxed, said a family member Wednesday.....

But Wednesday, Darren Chiacchia was more at ease. This brought some relief to the family who has been at Darren's side in Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

"When pain meds wear off, you can tell he's in a lot of pain," Daniel said about his brother. "(But) he's really got a good mind-spirit thing."

The article goes on to say they found 4 more broken ribs on the left side, bringing the total to 6. That's confusing, since he started out with 4 broken ribs, so I'm not sure if they meant 4 more bringing total to 8, or 2 more bringing total to 6.

Once again thanks for all your jingles! Bensmom is the true eventer here and I thank her for any info she can provide.

I want an update and feel bad today!! :,( Am I alone in this feeling? The sport has taken some hard hits lately! I am not sure that the short vs long format is to blame? I have always had trouble with the difficulty of the high level in eventing?? why does it have to be so hard so that only freakishly atheletic and brave horses go clean? What kind of sport is that??

Off my soap box now! :shoot:

Forever jingling for DC!! :jingles: :jingles: :jingles:

I'm afraid the short versus Classic format is to blame for the demise of the sport as many once knew it.
I wont get on my soapbox here theres plenty od info on that over on TOB eventing forum.
Breaks my heart what has become of what once was a true test of horse and rider.
MAkes me not even want to go to Rolex except for the shopping and you folks! :sigh:

At long last, an update from his family:

March 20, 2008 - 2PM EDT

Darren is still listed in critical condition, but he remains comfortable and stable. He has squeezed hands upon command at times, and opened his eyes on a few occasions. The medical staff remains optimistic about his recovery. Some of Darren’s favorite music has been playing around the clock at his bedside to soothe his spirit. Let’s all say some extra prayers on Good Friday and throughout this Easter weekend.

The body can and will recover, but brain cells, unfortunately, don't. There is no telling, at this point, whether or not there was any irreversible brain damage.

So just to emphasize how good the most recent update is, it means he can hear, can interpret what he hears, understand the words and respond. It's really, really good news. Mega-:jingles: for more positive updates like that one!

Prayers and :jingles: at this special time of year!

Saw this at the bottom of his site and thought it was just beautiful and heart warming how the "horse comuntiy" really does come together.

Many of the world's top equestrians have reached out to help keep Darren Chiacchia's, Independence Farm, running smoothly by donating their time and talents to teach his stable of students. Friend and neighbor in New York state, John Madden, came to Independence South in Ocala to help Darren's students as they prepare for this springs upcoming competitions at Poplar Place, The Fork and the CCI at the Florida Horse Park. Regarding Chiacchia, Madden said that his "contribution was made very easy. Darren has been a good friend and is an excellent horseman, which is evident from his students."

Earlier in the week, Missy Ransehousen, daughter of famed dressage trainer and previous USET Chef d'Equipe Jessica Ransehousen, worked on the flat with Chiacchia's students and will be attending The Fork horse trials with them. On Friday, Jonathon Holling, will be helping out and attending Poplar Place and the CCI* at the Florida Horse Park with Chiacchia's students.

On Monday and Tuesday, one of Show Jumping's star riders, Lauren Hough will teach Darren's students how to further their skills in the show jumping arena. Dressage legend Robert Dover will be here on Wednesday to help them prepare for their dressage tests. The end of the week will bring back Jumping legends John and Beezie Madden on Thursday morning.

Both Holling and Ransehausen will teach here at Independence Farm on a weekly basis and will mentor the students through their upcoming events.
