I need another viewpoint on this before I start getting asked questions.

14 Months ago, I got placed in my current position by headhunter who I will call Jane. MY ex-boyfriend told her to get me a job at my current company or he would find me a job in my current company. There was a fit and Jane placed me. Ex-boyfriend probably did not have much to do other than the initial recommendation or it would have come out by now. Jane did not have to do much either to get me placed here.

At my previous company, I had a counter part who I worked really well with. Let's call him Bob, since that is his name. Bob left previous company right before I did. I gave Jane his name after I got on here. Jane never found anything for him.

Now, I created a position in my current company and just got Bob hired on. There was another postion being created at a higher level and Bob got a call from Jane about it. Since that job is not finalized, Bob decided to take my job.

Jane thinks she needs to be paid for placing Bob. :o I am not sure whether current company will be upset or not. I hired the best candidate I knew for the job. Yes, I did previously pass on Bob's name, but I did not need a placement firm for the job I created.

Two fold question. I need this smoothed over in case I want to use Jane in the future. And I don't want to lose Bob. Jane is calling me asking me to call back. How should I act with Jane? Naive? Did I do something wrong? And we think the horse commission's business is messed up!

I think Jane is screwed. She didn't place him. you created the job for him and she didn't even know about it.

You do not owe Jane anything.
first of all, she didn't even know Bob until you introduced them.
second - you did not use Jane to try to fill your position
third -Bob decided to take the bird in the hand position rather than the promise of a better job.

Nope - you do not owe Jane anything...

as far as wanting to use Jane in the future - well heck, it's how her bread is buttered baby. She'll work for you again, trust me. I actuall would be a bit taken back that she's even asking for a commission on Bob.
