I fly a LOT. Have really only had my luggage lost a few times over the years.

My best story- I was working in Gothenburg, Sweden. One of my best friends lived in Munich, Germany. Plan was for me to fly to Munich and then we were going to drive to Alps to ski.

My flight connected through Copenhagen. Sadly, Copenhagen airport had a major fire in their air-traffic control tower that day. Idiotically, they were letting planes LAND, but not letting any take off (WHY they didn't let me know this when I checked in at Gothenburg, I don't know... I could have rerouted my flight far, far away from Copenhagen... :brickwall: ). Anyway, I blithely land in Copenhagen to a DISASTER. Learn about the fire. Pissed off people everywhere. Luggage EVERYWHERE. All over the airport. I hve never seen anything like it. Spent the night in Copenhagen, get re-routed through Berlin and then finally to Munich late Saturday night.

Knowing there is no way in HELL my bag made it from Copenhagen, I wait anyway for all the luggage, and then file the report (always fun filing a lost bag report in a foreign country...)

Since skiing is obviously long gone, friend and I do the only possible thing, which is that she picks me up at airport, brings me a change of clothes, and we immediately head to the Hofbrau House to drink, and then out in Munich to club all night...

GEt on my flight back to Sweden on Sunday afternoon, having talked to no one at the airline in either Germany, Denmark, or Sweden about my lost bag. Land in Sweden, decide- what the hell, I may as well go to the luggage area to see. Lo and behold, THERE IS MY BAG. :jaw: :cheer:

All is well that ends well. And we had a great time at the Hofbrau House!

JF - that's good to know. I always wondered how that would work if it wasn't pressurized.

JF- that is all good and interesting info on flying with your pets. I've always been afraid to try it; I have heard horror stories of pets freezing and/or suffocating to death in the hold.

I always think about how fun it would be to bring our dog with us to some of the places we go (when we do an outdoorsy-camping-hiking type vacation), and honestly the kennels around me are so expensive, if we take a longer trip it would probably even be cheaper to bring her with us than have 2 weeks of kenneling! :psycho:

The biggest concern is that some aircrafts do not have an indicator if pressure is lost in the cargo area unlike the cabin. Even if there was an indicator, there is no way of getting your pet oxygen (like the masks they have for people) so at the alitude that commercial planes fly at, its likely the dog would die before they could even make an emergency landing. But I don't know where you could find stats on how often they lose pressure. Our dogs flew for years until it got to be too expensive. And the last few times my dad has gone out to SD to hunt, they chartered a plane and there wasn't room for our 70lb setter. :) And you need to check the airline to make sure they will take dogs during certain times of the year and/or the cargo area is temp regulated. Airlines like Alaska and US Airways won't fly pets during the summer.

It is expensive though. On Delta, its $75 each way to carry on a dog, $150 each way to take them as a checked bag and then for a dog like mine (about 65lbs and 22" tall at the shoulder) its about $250 or so to go as express cargo (unaccompanied baggage) because of the kennel size needed. And you need a health certificate issued within a short period of time before the flight. Plus there are strict regulations on kennel size, water and food intake before and during, and health of the dog. So it adds up.

But if it gives you some reassurance, my Aunt flew her two (annoying/neurotic/crazy) JRT from Newark to Belgium when they moved to Brussels. Both dogs did just fine (she was more freaked out then they were!).

When we moved to PA Miss Misha flew in style while the rest of the family drove. My parents picked her up in Newark before we even left AZ. She was a little dazed at first, long plane ride, long car trip, new people. But in a few hours she was her normal self...

We did have to get a health cert, and an airline approved crate, but not a huge amount of hassle. And I was assured by the airline folks that she would be perfectly safe...

Well, this is much more interesting than listening to me complain. :)

As much as I travel I'm surprised it hasn't happened to me more but it just really threw a wrench into my day yesterday. I just checked it again but I put my shoes in my computer bag. :P
