GAG - DOT hiring circa 1943 <_< Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees Theres no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage. Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties: 1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, theyre less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldnt be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently. 2. When you have to use older women <_< , try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. Its always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy. <---Did mom intimidate you little boy? 3. General experience indicates that husky girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters. 4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job. <--- you have got to be kidding!!! 5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up. 6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that theyll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves. 7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change. <--- you gotta wonder what rocket scientist thought that up! 8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day. 9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they cant shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency. <_< 10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girls husband or father may swear vociferously, shell grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this. <--- yeah you sobs!! 11. Get enough size variety in operators uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point cant be stressed too much in keeping women happy. <--- There you go - you got one right!! |

Yep, LOVE Change: Nice to know that I'm "hot-tempered" and "inefficient". I would hate for someone to make fun of me and break my spirit.

When we moved into my grandma's house and cleaned out several old book shelves and closets we found a copy of a womens social etiquette book from when she was in college in 1926. We laughed for hours reading it. While I agree that these are a little extreme I have thought about having a spay and neuter program when we hire new people. Time have thankfully changed. The good thing from the memo is at least they recognized differences in men and women. Now I think in our quest to not discriminate we degender everything. I think there are differences and they should be recognized and worked around. Lest I get flamed as a sexist pig, my company has 1/3 of our engineering staff that are women. One of which I hope to call partner in the future. Now that might not sound like much but it is significantly more than the industry average and much higher than the graduation averages. LF |

We once found a Victorian "how to" book for Young Ladies in a stack of used books. By its standards I'm totally and completly useless.

Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Male Employees There are still questions as to whether transit companies should hire men for jobs formerly held by men. The efficiency and productivity of the female staff has completely unsettled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient males available and how to use them to the best advantage. Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject: 1. Pick only married men. They are used to the efficiency and productivity of femals and may actually have a sense of responsibility. They know all about sexual harrassment and its repercussions for them, they need the work or they wouldnt be doing it, and usually have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently. 2. When you have to use old men , try to get ones who have only married once. They are more trustworthy. Old men are well known to have trouble adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. Its always well to impress upon old men the importance of friendliness and courtesy. 3. General experience indicates that husky boys - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are beer guzzlers. Steer clear of them. You want the muscular model that will encourage the ladies of the office to spend more time there, and of course he will be doing all the heavy lifting, so something easy on the eyes is important. 4. Retain a physician to give each man you hire a special physical examination - one covering ALL the now known male conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals all the employee-to-be's male weaknesses which will make him mentally and/or physically unfit for the job. 5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up. Do not allow the male employee a Balckberry, telephone or the internet. 6. Give the male employee a definite day-long schedule of duties, much like your honey-do list, so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that men make excellent workers when they are reminded that a woman could do it in half the time. OTOH, some need their egos stroked to perform sufficiently and you will need to determine which method works best with your male employee as they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves. 7. Whenever possible, let the male employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Men are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change, and feeling needed. 8. Give every boy an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You will simply have to make some allowances for male psychology. A boy has more confidence and is more efficient if he can keep his hair, how ever little there is left, tidied. And train your male to wash his hands several times a day. Nothing is more disgusting then a male that does not wash his hands after a bathroom visit. 9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Men are sometimes sensitive; they seem to shrug off harsh words, but will often harbor them for later use. Never ridicule a man - yes, we know it is difficult - it breaks his spirit and cuts off any efficiency he may possess. 10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around men. They have issues with words they do not understand, and he will grow to dislike a place of business where he hears too much that he can not understand. 11. Get one size of male employee so the the uniform can have a proper fit *wink, nudge*. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women employees happy, and thus productive. |

DQ: I nominate you for the Re-Write Pulitzer of 2008!!! OTOH, I think LF has some good points... and I commend him for not only understanding that there are differences in men and women (I also agree about the fact that in recent years everything has become "degendered" which isn't necessarily a good thing, either...balance, people, balance!), but applaud LF also for being open minded enough to allow smart, dedicated, hardworking women show their stuff! Yeah, I wonder how we'd all feel if we were suddenly stuck in the Victorian age and had to live "by the book"! However, I'm proud of my grandmother and her sister (great aunt) who were born at the turn of the century and went on anyway to become terrifically successful businesswomen, married, mothers and really cool ladies. (Grandma became a cattle baroness, and great aunt ended up owning two banks and a lumber company). It was tough for women in that time, but not impossible!

No applause we do it for selfish reasons. We hire the very best graduates that we possibly can. One year we hired 2 women and no men. Then no women for 3 years. We are looking for the best people we can hire not caring about gender or race. We flex schedule one of the women so she can also be a good mom. We also flex schedule some of the dads. It allows us to keep the best. I hope some employer out there does the same for my daughters someday. LF |
