I work at a local pet/feed store. Got a call, this woman got kicked out of her appartment, couldn't take the cat and abandoned the poor thing, did I want a cat? Well sure! :brickwall: The other option for the cat was to be taken to the SPCA, and because of her age (10+) she would have been put down immediately. I couldn't live with myself if I let that happen.

Older, I THINK female, grey, supposed to get along with other cats and people...

Brought her home, my cat immediately spazzed and hissed, upon seeing the cat in the cage. Took new cat down to the basement, where the litter box is. New cat is now hiding under the steps, i gave her food and water. New Cat was letting me pet her, but is now growling + hissing at me if I get too close. She's terrified I'm sure, so I'm leaving her alone for the time being.

I assume it'll be a few days before new cat ventures out....any suggestions on how to better introduce the two cats? I'd love for them to get along.....otherwise New Cat will have to just live in my bedroom.

UPDATE: She turned out to be a HE, and he is incredibly sweet, loving and people friendly. We named him Taj, here are a few pix.

I rescued an 11 year old cat , he has never been able to have access to the whole house, he has had to live alone (well he has the bird) in my sons room, he started hissing and would run for the closet if the door was left open for more than 10 minutes, thoroughly scared of the other cats ect, I tried the basement thing but he was so scared he peed in his own bed.
Well 3 days ago after being in his room for 3 YEARS he pawed at the door for me (he is declawed , no I did not do it ) and walked out, he has not gone back in since, lays out in the living room with the other cats, up on the couch with hubby, so very weird, i have tried tons of times to acclimate him to the house and the other cats with no success, not sure what happened but he diced at 14 years old it was time to be sociable.
a liitle back ground, he was taken to the vet to be euthanised for being vicious, the vet would not put him down but took him and gave him to the no kill shelter, he spent plenty of time there but they gave him back to the vet to be put down as non salvagable, to vicious, the vet still would not do it, could find nothing wrong with him, no one could pick him up or pet him though, so i took him for a barn cat , except i find out right away no claws,(they didn't know as they couldn't really touch him) so in the house he goes and there he has been ever since and now is finally part of the household, a side note I have alwys been able to hold him and pet him, he is very lovable, and has a huge purr. you just have to be slow and gentle not rough and he is gentle back, so sad people do not take the time to understand.

Ok so off track to answer your question, time I guess is the best, hopefully it will not take your cat 3 years though.

Update: Cat has migrated from basement to upstairs....and is hiding under a sofa. I'm sure new cat and Mia ran in to each other at some point, but no one seems worse for the wear.

It will take some time, Be patient, and makesure to have another litter box, Resident cat may feel angry about having to share, its a funny thing with cats, and make sure new one knows where the boxes are. There will be hissing, some cats get over it, Some never do and just learn to tolerate each other! Ask me I have 4, LOL Nig hugs to you for doing a wonderful thing. Give lots of love to you old kitty as they sometimes get very jealous!

Thanks, I was gonna grab another litter box today when I go in to pick up my feed.

I was spending lots of time with Mia(resident kitty) last night in letting her know that she's not being replaced and the other kitty didn't have a home.;) She's very curious and playful....and I really wanted a younger cat for her to play with....but as I always say...your animals will find you.;)

I'll keep everyone updated and add pictures!

KUDOS to you for rescuing the New Kitty! :cheer: <3 :rose:

I think you're doing things right...just time and tons of love to each (carefully, so Old Kitty isn't too jealous!)...in time they may become fast friends. If New Kitty is already upstairs things are going great! :one:

Just some words of encouragement and kudos to you for helping a kitty in need!!

Another thought is using some feliway...it may just keep the tension down a bit, even just for the new kitty who has been through the ringer lately.

Best wishes!!!

Yay for taking in the new kitty. That was such a wonderful thing to do. At that age, you're right, who knows what would've happened to it at the shelter.
Just give them time and keep smooching on Mia while still trying to bond with new kitty. They may never be friends, but over time they should tolerate each other.

New kitty is NOT receptive of attention so I'm letting it be for now....still under the sofa.

With how scared New Kitty is, I feel she had been abandoned for quite some time and all the people sounds are VERY scary.

Mia got a brand new catniped stuffed heart and self heating pad today, she's thrilled!;)

What's Feliway??

I was just going to suggest Feliway, but as usual, Brydelle beat me to it!

Feliway is a feline-appeasing pheromone. I've never used it myself, but I keep thinking we should get some for the clinic. It's a plug-in (like the Glade things that are supposed to make your house smell nice) and it releases pheramone that you can't smell, but your cats can. It's supposed to be great for smoothing out the "herd dynamics" among cats.

Interesting!! I'll look into who has it around me, and maybe purchase some. New kitty just scratched the he** outta me.....maybe she's not as friendly as I thought! Hiding elsewhere in the house.

Oye......what I get for being a sucker! :psycho:

It is called Comfort Zone at places like Petsmart, Petco, etc...

You can get a spray and/or diffuser, I am a total believer (which says alot b/c by nature, I do not believe in anything easily), seen it work miracles too many times for many, many, many clients...I use the DAP (the doggie pheromones) for my own dogs, as my rescue Great Dane had a history of severe dog aggressive, we were her last chance and we have found a balance in our home with my JRT but alot of it is thanks to the DAP and when it gets low (need to change q 6 wks), you can see her begin to eye and jump at my little JRT...

I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say good job in giving this kitty a good home, it certainly sounds like she deserves it, good luck with her!
