So, we headed out to Lake Tahoe area on Saturday for 3 days of skiing fun in the west... Sunday we headed out to Alpine Meadows in CA, and it SO icy... and of course, I managed to fall about 9:15 AM and "hurt" my shoulder. I proceeded to get up and ski the rest of the day, with it getting more painful (but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for a lift ticket and not use it!). When we got back to the people's house where we were staying, with the combination of it hurting so badly and not being able to move it at all, I asked my host (an orthoped. dr.) what else I could take besides ibuprofen for the pain. He looked at me, asked me where it hurt, and when I told him, decided he'd take a look at for himself. "Why," he exclaimed, "you've got an anterior dislocation. Nice. Guess we'll have to put that back into place." Umm, no, really? So, he managed to get it put back into place with a minimum of pain. I declined skiing the next day, to let it set a bit, but was out the third day at Heavenly, and while it was sore, it was usable. Now, the little medical book recommended 3-4 weeks of a sling with little to no use of the shoulder to let the tendons and ligaments set. Umm, somehow I don't think that's going to happen. I'm using it, cautiously, and stop when I move it in a way that it REALLY doesn't like. So, has anyone else dislocated your shoulder? How long did it take to get it back to 100%? |

Insist on an MRI. And by "insist," I mean, be an obnoxious you-know-what until you get one. I dislocated my shoulder about three years ago when a poorly-fitted, poorly-tightened saddle on a trainer's horse slipped, and I hit the ground. I was about three hours from the closest hospital, so I popped it back into place myself (amidst excruciating pain). I almost blacked out about three times en route to the emergency room and once while having x-rays done. I have never been in so much pain before in my life, seriously. And I've taken some good tumbles and had some broken bones in my day. I dislocated it on a Friday evening, and the country hospital I went to with it didn't have an ortho on call. So it was Tuesday before I ever saw a doctor. The ortho I saw is known for being terrible, but the only other ortho in town was on vacation. <_< Anyway, dude insisted that it hadn't "really" been dislocated, since the x-rays showed that it was properly lined up. Errrr, no kidding. I eased back into place myself at the "scene" because there was no way in hell I was going to travel for three hours over bumpy country roads to get to the hospital and let them do it. I tried to explain that to the guy, but he went on to say that a.) you can't dislocate your shoulder by falling on it (riiiiight) and b.) because it had popped back into place with minimal effort, there was no way it could've been dislocated in the first place. I was sent to therapy with the bones rattling around in my shoulder and was diagnosed by this quack with "minor rotator cuff injury." Now, I've had rotator cuff problems before, and this was definitely NOT a rotator cuff inury! But I didn't know what else to do, so I went to PT until I got bored with it (four or five times, LOL). I was riding again within a week and a half. My shoulder never stabilized to where it had been before the injury, however. A couple of months later, it started subluxing (partial dislocations) and dislocating on its own. Every month or so for the past three years, I have to pop the damned thing back into place again. Some of the most notable subluxations have been while taking off a shirt and when I reached up to pet my mare on her neck! It takes practically no provocation at all. If I hold my arm a certain way for longer than a few minutes, the entire thing goes numb. A couple of years ago, I got fed up with it and went to another ortho. I had an MRI done on it, and, apparently, there's such a huge rip in the tissue on the front of my shoulder that all I have to do is just move my arm a certain way so that the head of the bone is in the middle of the tear, and the whole thing dislocates all over again. That's why it was so easy to put back in--there's a huge hole there! The joint doesn't sit right at all times, and the bones press on nerves they're not supposed to press on if I hold my arm a certain way, which is why the thing will go numb in certain positions. If I hold my hands behind my back long, I'll get light-headed and nearly pass out because it's apparently pressing on some important blood vessel or other! Anyway, it just so happened that around that time, my insurance company decided to cancel my coverage, so I couldn't have the surgery to have it fixed. So, here I am, three years later, with a shoulder that was supposedly never dislocated that still pops out anytime it pleases. The therapy I went to right after the injury probably made it worse because the ignorant ortho was so clouded with ego that he couldn't imagine that I could possibly NEED an MRI, since he was so certain I never dislocated it in the first place. Every time it pops out, I shred that tissue a little bit more, which makes it easier to pop out again, which is a vicious cycle. *Sigh* I'm having it fixed as soon as I am able to get health insurance again. But it sure does suck. That's why I say have the MRI. That way, you'll know for sure how much damage was done and won't have to go through all the stupid crap I went through (and am still going through) with it. I hope you feel better soon. I know how uncomfortable you must be. Got any codeine handy?

Ouch so sorry to here that you got hurt.
I have never dislocated my shoulder but I did slip a disc in my lower back and that took a while to heal, the things that stinks is that it is now a lot easier to reinjure it... as I have found a few times. Grrrr.... I hope that you feel better soon. |

Yes, I dislocated my shoulder almost 20 years ago. And yes you should insist on an MRI to make sure everything is OK. I don't much time to type the whole story, but here's my experience. I was bucked off a horse, landed on my right shoulder. It was soft ground, I figured it was bruised. Drove back to dorm, driving my stick shift (was in college), lived with it for a couple days, then could barely move it. Went to a chiropractor. I love my chiropractor, but this was a different one, and looking back, I should have gone to an orthopedic dr. The chiro put my shoulder back in place (hurt like h-e-double-hockey-sticks). Then the next day it popped back out. I had to have it put back in place about 3 times before it stayed. And it hurt. Several years later I still had trouble with it, and found out that the ligament running down the front of my shoulder joint was popping out of its groove.
That was eventually fixed, but looking back I really wish I had taken the time and expense to get it taken care of properly. The chiro I have now would have looked at it and sent me right on to an MD. |

OUCH! I took an ass over shoulders (via over the horses head) tumble at a Keswick schooling show years ago and had a "temporary separation"...but didn't know it....that is until I was getting a leg up and pulled down and SNAP - there it went back in. I got xrays and laid in the docs office the next day for 45 minutes while he plucked gravel dust out of my shoulder with tweezers. I wore a sling for 2 weeks, and the figure 8 brace for about 4 weeks. Sally kept telling me I needed to keep the brace because it made my shoulders look great!!! BUT...it did solve my "chicken wing" phase...as I could no longer LIFT my elbows...I could only move my arm forward. To this day, if I sleep on it wrong, I have to "pop" it before it's useable...

I dislocated my shoulder and compound fractured my upper arm, all in one fall. Someone I was showing with purposefully slammed their horse into my very green 3 year old tb at a show and my mare just lost it and chucked me in the dirt and trampled over me. Because of the compound fracture, they could not put my shoulder back in, they had to put a weighted cast on it to bring my arm bone down and allow the top half of my arm bone and shoulder to go back into place. It went back in about two days if I remember correctly. I was pretty drugged up, so give or take a day. My arm took several weeks to heel. I had ligament damage as well. Key thing, if they give you physical therapy, make sure you do it. I of course didnt because it hurt so much, and now I can not lift my arm more than straight out to the side.

I got launched 5 years ago, and dislocated my right shoulder. For about the first year after, it would pop out, then pop back in several times. It was VERY painful. It's still not 100% to this day, I guess I probably have arthritis starting in it now. |

I mildy dislocated my shoulder a few years ago and it took about a week to feel OK again. The bigger issue was the major head concussion that resulted from the same fall... Fortunately my shoulder has no lingering issues. I'd rather break a bone than do damage to a tendon or ligament. A bone usually heals fully, whereas a tendon/ ligament injury is frequently never the same. Good luck healing.

Mine's been dislocated for about seven years (on and off, mostly on ). I got hit by a drunk driver and they did so much damage to the soft tissues, that it dislocated, stayed in a dislocated position, and refused to heal in a proper position b/c the soft tissue was too weak to hold it in place. Years at physio and the gym strengthened the soft tissue.. enough to usually hold the shoulder in the wrong place. Otherwise, my shoulder blade sort of slips around freeform under my skin.. kinda creepy to see.The last bout *just* ended, I had been in mortal pain since around Christmas, but it's just slipped back into place a few days ago. I'm doing all I can to strengthen the muscles in "this" position. So... to add to what everyone else has said, if they don't or can't help you, know where/when it's in place, and strengthen the soft tissues there yourself. |

I've never dislocated a shoulder just compressed one a time or two I do know when I had ripped all the ligaments around my collarbone that it took about six weeks for everything to tighten up I also think an MRI would be a good idea esp for something to look back on if this thing goes south Feel Better < I have been dying to use that little jingly guy> |

Ouch! Sorry to hear about your injury. Most likely it's just a sprain, but if it doesn't get better in a couple of weeks, you will have to have it checked.. hopefully it didn't tear anything. I have done things like this to my knees. Fortunately, my shoulders are still ok. Didn't you love the view from Heavenly though? I love Lake Tahoe. I learned to ski at Squaw Valley and went every year for like 15 years!! I miss it. Get better Devon!
