How about these - coming from a child of the 50s and early 60s

- walking to school in first grade, a route that went through town (Fairfield County), down alleys, by myself - a walk that was about 1 mile
- walking to friends' houses, exploring the backyards and fields at will
- hopping on other peoples' horses and ponies in the pastures - with owners permission :jaw:
- all day bareback rides in the snow, no helmets, no plan, along roads and trails
- watching the first color tv in town at the invitation of a Network executive
- learning how to handle bullies without adult intervention
- having my feelings hurt, being disappointed, being teased by my friends and their siblings and still turning out ok :psycho:
- being free to explore the world around me

Then-
- outside courses
- saddles that fit without pads
- canary breeches
- long linen show jackets
- paisley chokers
- hunting in the fall, after the show season
- GM as a teen and in his early 20s!

I feel badly about so many kids today who are so over-programmed and over-protected, germ free and soft. I worry about the future - will they be able to adapt as adults?

Ah, look at La Gringa at Earl Warren. Sigh. The Turkey Show used to be magnificent. Now it's a schooling show for those getting their feet wet. :(

I remember romper stompers, sit 'n' spins, big wheels, those big orange marshmallow-shped blow up boxing gloves so you could beat the crap out of your brother and not get into trouble. Good times.

I was just commenting to a friend about how the kids at our barn never go on creek walks or anything like that. We've got a great creek that would be marvelous to explore and not one of them ever does. My summers used to be spent riding and then exploring the creek for as far as we felt like. We'd walk back to the barn on the road with squishy muckers.

Hose water always tastes better than tap water (even bottled water). When did we become such wusses?

I did most of those things when y'all weren't even a gleam in your fathers' eyes, but I've got to point out that bad things DID happen - I, for one, put my head through the windshield of a 1962 Cadillac - the last model made without safety glass - on account of no seatbelts. One hundred and twenty-five stitches in my neck to close the wound. I currently need a hip replacement because of damage from that accident, too. And I rode a pony that made a regular habit of planting me headfirst into the coop (solid jumps! remember them?) - bareheaded if just hacking around, wearing a useless hunt cap if in a show. I'll bet I'd have a good deal more brain left without those impacts. And I did meet Chester the Molester when riding along alone on my pony on a back road ...

My daughter assures me that she and her friends were just as wild'n'crazy at the barn when there were no grownups around. I'm just glad that at least some of the time she was wearing a helmet -- which have been demonstrated to reduce head injuries by 88%.

...- on account of no seatbelts.

My 80yo mom still puts her arm out when she stops quickly. Pre-seatbelts she would grab whatever kid was sitting in the front seat :innocent:
My dad insisted on buying one of the first cars to have seatbelts (that weren't an option)... a Mustang :psycho:

Oh god, yes. And I would wait at the end of every show to see if she would say my name. :psycho:

Me too and while she said ALL my siblings names (Cathy, Paul, Jim, Mary, etc.) she never not once said Therese. *pout*

Anyone Remember Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp?
The Monkees tv show??
H R Puffinstuff??

yes I remember the Monkees... :innocent:

How about watching Aerosmith at local venues before they got big (we are talking small -100-300 seats)

Drinking age was 18 -

hiphuggers, bellbottoms, elephant pants, sizzle dresses, hot pants, midriff shirts.

earth shoes, clogs, dr scholls - platform shoes (Revere Girls)

completely acceptable for any adult to reprimand any misbehaviour

sledding down a hill on a hunk of cardboard

being outdoors no matter what the weather - My mom always said "your clothes will dry and so won't you, now get out and burn off some energy!"

Shovelling - we were sent out to clear the driveway BEFORE my Dad got home or BEFORE he left for work - and we only had shovels.

Hard to believe this was PRIME TIME TV!

They're creepy and they're kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They're all together ooky,
The Addams Family.

Their house is a museum
Where people come to see 'em
They really are a scream
The Addams Family.

(Neat)
(Sweet)
(Petite)

So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We're gonna pay a call on
The Addams Family.
