Those rust breeches were thicker fabric or a better fit or SOMEthing cuz I never remember VPLs in those EVER.

Pffft maybe cuz my butt was smaller then????

Or maybe cuz we all wore grannie panties? (Who had heard of a thong back then?)

too funny!

Mares - yup that's how I learned to ride too -
I didn't own a saddle with my first horse, and I made a bridle out of rawhide. My folks were city people and had no 'hand' in the care or upkeep of the horse. They bought him for me as a present - it was up to me to come up with the money for board, vet, farrier, and somehow aquire the knowledge to not get killed. Oh and my horse - well his barn name was Crazy Brandy - my parents never knew (thank God!)

Lessons? I had my first formal lesson when was in my twenties which would be about 20-25 years ago.

Klick Klacks - I had a set of really nice purple ones.

Miss Jean and her magic mirror - have you been good?

Rex Trailer - Boomtown

This soft squishy world we live in now doesn't even compare... Riding bikes without helmets and knee pads (I still have a scar on my knee from road rash... I remember thinking that was the coolest scar EVER!), riding horses bareback w/out a helmet (wind in my hair), who ever heard of rubber chips on playgrounds (when we fell it was usually on dirt and grass... sometimes asphalt), barefoot and knee deep in the creek catching minnows and crayfish then bringing them home to put in my fish tank (now I know what ate my guppies). <Sigh>... those were the days.

As a kid of the 70's there are a few funny things I remember...

Some of us remember the 60s too
I remember the Maclay at the Garden :) Now THAT was a horse show!
Being on "The Team" meant a lot! And you got ON the team because of who you rode for or who your parents were :) Sometimes you got on The Team because you had the best horse ;)
Gladstone, NJ was Mecca
There really was no "Florida" (just a couple of little shows where you could get out of the snow)
Indio was 20 years away
Bamboo poles were all over the schooling area :sigh:
The "Big Pretty Horses" division was huge and competitive! (regular conf)
Judd Webster :psycho:
The Peter & David Show
No Vermont
No Hampton Classic. When it finally arrived, it was waaaaay different and wasn't it in Amagansett? I forget :o
Horses got their shoes pulled after "New York" unless you were going to Toronto
No USET finals
No capital challenge
No AHJF
1st years, 2nd years, regulars, conf, amateurs, juniors, ponies. Nothing else!
Coolers hanging on the jumps :innocent: in the schooling area
No golf carts
Boulder Brook Thanksgiving
Judy Martin was IT in California ;)
Junior Hunters also did the eq (which was only medal and maclay)
Took 4 medals to get to The Garden? So every smart kid used grandma's address in Florida (one medal)
Hunterdon was IT
reserpine ruled
Custom Vogels wre less than $100 :psycho:

It was still alot like that even in the early 80s! I still have a Peter and David Show bumper sticker somewhere . . .

Me too and while she said ALL my siblings names (Cathy, Paul, Jim, Mary, etc.) she never not once said Therese. *pout*

OMG that is enough to give me nightmares. I am scared of clowns! Probably because of that thing.

We had Batman and Robin ones.

Remember the Pebbles hairdos and hair bows... like big ones?

I remember in college wearing hair bows, sweatshirts and pearls. Big hair of the 80's with hair spray so stiff it was like cement. Aquanet? Blech..

Remember when we had to use real Bluing for gray horses? None of these Quicksilver shampoos. Back then it was Orvus or Wonderblue shampoo. That was it. We all had showsheen though, and absorbine and bigeloil which is still around.

Remember when the half pads were a foam thing with a terry cloth cover? None of these Mattes fancy things.
