Those Born 1920-1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants &children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts, or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes. No video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chat rooms.......

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers, and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them... CONGRATULATIONS!

This was too good to pass up, I had to share.

As a kid of the 70's there are a few funny things I remember...

The Brady Bunch
Silly Putty
Shrinky Dinks
Chinese Jump Rope
Big Wheels
The Dukes of Hazzard.

Horse Related:
No harnesses on helmets, nor safety helmets.
No such thing as short stirrup or baby greens
Scalloped braids.
Braiding with yarn color to match coat.
Brown boots/helmets velvet helmets.
TB's winning everything.
Rust breeches
Harry Hall Breeches
Pytchley Coats
At Old Indio.. the OSTRICH RACES!!!
Jimmy Williams cool bits
Hunter Pairs, Hunter Teams at almost every show
Outside Courses at a lot of shows.
Natural jumps in hunter courses... logs, real brush, brick walls.
6 bar classes
Puissance at a lot of shows.
Ribbons as big as me at normal shows. Remember the old shows at Cow Palace? Big ribbons!
Shows that had one arena for all classes.
Socials at the shows, they were so fun.
The OLD Santa Barbara Turkey show. I miss that one!

PLEASE ADD YOUR OWN and pictures are great!!

Here are a couple of old photos .. one early 80's, others 70's and 80's.

My old horse "Lights Out" a TRAKEHNER in hunters in the early 80's. Nobody knew what he was back then. They all thought, arab cross? He had a nice head.

As a kid of the 70's there are a few funny things I remember...

Some of us remember the 60s too
I remember the Maclay at the Garden :) Now THAT was a horse show!
Being on "The Team" meant a lot! And you got ON the team because of who you rode for or who your parents were :) Sometimes you got on The Team because you had the best horse ;)
Gladstone, NJ was Mecca
There really was no "Florida" (just a couple of little shows where you could get out of the snow)
Indio was 20 years away
Bamboo poles were all over the schooling area :sigh:
The "Big Pretty Horses" division was huge and competitive! (regular conf)
Judd Webster :psycho:
The Peter & David Show
No Vermont
No Hampton Classic. When it finally arrived, it was waaaaay different and wasn't it in Amagansett? I forget :o
Horses got their shoes pulled after "New York" unless you were going to Toronto
No USET finals
No capital challenge
No AHJF
1st years, 2nd years, regulars, conf, amateurs, juniors, ponies. Nothing else!
Coolers hanging on the jumps :innocent: in the schooling area
No golf carts
Boulder Brook Thanksgiving
Judy Martin was IT in California ;)
Junior Hunters also did the eq (which was only medal and maclay)
Took 4 medals to get to The Garden? So every smart kid used grandma's address in Florida (one medal)
Hunterdon was IT
reserpine ruled
Custom Vogels wre less than $100 :psycho:

I feel cool.

--and we did have Atari, but ya know what? We never played it, we were too busy falling off swing sets. I still have it, and my husband drools over how pristine it is. :P

No brakes. No steering.

3. Riding habit:
Shorts, tee and sneakers.
No helmet.
Loose hair flying in the wind.

Learned:
Balance.
Communication.
Balance.

I got that from my dad- Being a youngin, I am not sure what I was supposed to glean from that. I mean, we have all those precautions for all the kids who aren't around anymore to make fun of them... :sigh:

I googled Shrinky Dinks, they still exist!!

http://www.shrinkydinks.com/

Remember Lite Brite, Etch a Sketch, Spirograph?

I remember when jacks were made of metal and my dad stepped on them when I left them on the floor, big mistake. Now they make them out of soft rubber.

Remember the blow up dolls you punched and they hit you back in the face?

Gracetw,
We're not making fun of the precautions. We're revelling in our childhoods and feeling bad for how much kids today miss out on actual living. Yes, some kids from our day did get injured or die from not having a helmet on when they rode their bike bare-headed, bare-elbowed and bare-kneed.

But how many kids today are dying today at very young ages from obesity-related diseases, largely due to inactivity while they sit in front of their computer games? Based on what I see walking around the beach, I'd bet a whole lot more today are dying or will die way before their time...and without ever having felt the wind in their hair. It's doubly sad.
