What is the best for getting stains out of toilets? I have blue lines in my toilet from where the water runs down and and some other stuff. I think it's the darn well water, but I've lived on well water my whole life and I swear I could stay on top of it before and now I seem to have a perpetually icky "won't stay white" bowl. Help!

Well let's see...my parents use clorox spray w/ bleach for things like blue lines, but if there's rust they use the Whink Rust Stain Remover.

Toilets are icky-tastic. ;)

Buy a new toilet?

We bought a new toilet seat today because Mr. Elon has stained the underside of the seat beyond bleaching. His aim leaves much to be desired. :brickwall:

There is some sort of stone that will work on hard water calcium deposits. I can't remember what it is called...but I have one and it works great. It is rectangular shaped.....it I remember what it is called I'll post it....

eta maybe it is a pumice stone?????

Also CLR makes good products for removing hard water stains.

A pumice stone (can find them at grocery stores in the cleaning dept or where pool supplies are sold). Works great for hard water stains too.

Mr. Fishy uses a pumice stone to scrub the toilet rings and it works wonderfully!

Ewwww.... scrubbing toilets......

Maybe I could get Mr. Naters to do it with a pumice stone.

RH: If you toilet is turning blue around the water line, have your water checked (free by DHEC) for:

Copper AND Acidity (don't let them just tell you to test for copper)

Most of the times your water won't be high in copper content, but your water MAY be acidic, which causes corrosion in your water pipes, which are probably copper at some point. That in turn makes your water stain stuff blue because it becomes high in copper content.

Not going to hurt you... but annoying blue stains may disappear if your water is more neutral.

I agree 100%. I've tried them all because we have well water with a variety of mineral deposits (sulfur, lime, etc.) and very few things really work. My parents used to get "The Works" at the dollar store and I assumed it was probably some illegal chemical compound....but it is now sold at Price Chopper etc. It is really scary how well it works....scary enough that I try not to use it all the time...only when really necessary!

As far as a pumice stone....I'd be concerned about etching the smooth porcelain finish and therefore making it more likely to stain? Never heard of doing this. Of course who's to say that chemicals don't do the same thing....??

Ultimately, we'll simply have to replace the older toilet in our house because eventually hard water just makes a mess of the tank. We can keep up with the bowl, but the tank is pretty scaly.

You might want to check the toilet tank, too. Our toilet was really funky, even with good weekly cleanings with bleach. So I took off the lid to the tank, and it was pretty nasty in there. I scrubbed out the tank and presto! No more funk problems.
